Sweden unblocks aid to Zambia’s health sector

Share

The Swedish government has released about 400 million Sweden Kroners (sek), which amounts to US$47.3 million, meant to improve the health sector in Zambia.

The money will be directed to projects which will help reduce mortality rates among mothers and babies, as well as reproductive health challenges in the country.According to the agreement with the Swedish government, Zambia will first receive an initial 69 million Kroners for a programme that will run for about four years.

The programme will start this year up to 2019 and it will focus on reproductive, maternal, neo-natal, child and adolescent health.

This is contained in a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today by the Zambian Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden.

The release of this money signifies the end of the Swedish government’s six year-long health aid freeze to Zambia after some concerns were raised by Sweden regarding the financial misapplication, which has since been changed and revived.

The Swedish government has however hoped that under the leadership of President Edgar Lungu, the aid will go towards saving infants and mothers as intended by the donor country.
The assistance from the Swedish government is being extended to Zambia jointly with the department for international development DFID, the development arm of the United Kingdom following President Lungu’s popular poll on 20th January, 2015.
