GOVERNMENT has accused the media of meddling the wrangles between Chewas and Ngonis who are fighting over land in Chipangali settlement area in Chipata District.

Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Minister Dr Joseph Katema said yesterday that some media institutions were taking sides by deepening the differences between the two tribes.

Dr Katema said there was no need for media houses to be siding with one tribe saying doing so was fuelling the differences. He said the media should be seen to be promoting peace and harmony instead of taking sides.

“The role of the media is to promote peace and let me state here that the media is to be blamed for fuelling the differences between Ngonis and Chewas. Some media are taking sides on the differences of the two tribes,”Dr Katema said.

He wondered why instead of promoting harmony in different chiefdoms, the media was seen to be promoting anarchy and tribalism.

Dr Katema however said elders of the two tribes were meeting to resolve the misunderstandings on matter.

Misunderstanding between Chewas and Ngonis over the rightful ownership of Chipangali land has risen.

  1. It is Lungu’s PF who goes about calling Tonga’s names. He went to play around in North Western province, autioning his cheap watches and hats, all we heard was how Luvales were fighting with Kachokwes.
You see now, he forgets that Chief Mpezeni was not Tonga.

  2. Did the media send Kasolo to threaten the Mpezeni. Its Kasolo this advice should have targeted.
& listening to Chewas (Lucas Phiri et al) talking about bloodshed, I’m left to wonder if we are still in 2015 Zambia.
    Nkoyas vs Lozi
    Lunda vs Luvale
    Now Chewas vs Ngoni
& the big one Bembas vs Tongas.
Awe, Jesus, come & sort out the mess.

  3. The real Problem is the ka useless Chief Mpezeni nkosi yama koswe!!! The truth is that Ngonis don’t really exist in Zambia. Their Ngoniship is so dilute that there is no more real Ngonis remaining. They came from South Africa as a male only regiment and married women from other tribes along the way. The final blow is when they even lost their language completely such that now there is no one in Zambia who speaks Ngoni. Even ka useless Mpezeni cannot speak it instead he speaks Nsenga mixed with Chewa. Actually the Tumbukas in Magodi are more Ngoni that this ka Mpezeni. He should therefore just leave the Chewas alone in Chipangali.

  4. Mthangatambeta ndipo unachiputa, osati kutisha chibefu. If you are chewa just go and join nyau dancers ku dambwe and become a makanja or kang’wing’wi.

  5. This issue of Chipangali is dividing the people of Chipangali who are both Ngoni and Chewa. In Eastern province Chewas and Ngoni have lived in harmony in years. In fact the villages of Chewas and Ngonis stand side by side in a lot of areas. That’s how it is and that’s how it has been been. When the Ngonis came to Fort Jameson (Chipata) they found Chewas already there and as per name of Gawa Undi, he gave the Ngoni’s areas to settle. So this issue of Chipangali has nothing to do with government but the traditional leadership. Mpezeni and Gawa know this and the early they sorted it the better. RB has nothing to do with this case. RB is just a son of the soil, just like ECL is the son of the soil. Don’t turn this into a Sata/Chitimukulu type of issue. Don’t bring RB in this mess. This issue…
