Lets focus on Zambia’s developmental agenda and not petty issues – Hakainde Hichilema

We should not be diverted away from the developmental agenda of our country by discussing immaterial things as a citizens. It is always heartbreaking that we politicians are sometimes in the forefront bringing up petty issues in our political discourse each time we fail to lead our people or have runout of ideas on governing.

Zambia has serious economic challenges at the moment which should ideally preoccupy the debate arena on how best we can solve them in short term, medium term and long term. With the onset of rains in various parts of the country at the moment, we must be asking ourselves whether farmers have received their seeds and fertiliser for planting this season and at what cost are they buying these farming inputs instead of dwelling on personalities in order to hide our failures.

These are the issues that preoccupy some of us on a daily basis and we make wide consultations with various stakeholders to find an amicable solution to our country’s economic challenges that has brought massive poverty and hunger in our homes.

Like we have said before, Zambians are now too clever to accept any empty rhetoric and sloganeering with false promises. We are depressing our masses, especially the jobless youths if, for example, we wake up one morning and announce recruitment of more than 5000 or so teachers only for the programme to be abandoned without any reasons.

These are the issues that are causing a lot of mistrust by citizens that is now rubbing on all of us in the public service as politicians. Citizens now think we are all the same despite our different backgrounds where some of us have achieved a few things in our own small way through hardworking which is now being ridiculed.

And the moment we shall accept to take the blame for our current situation is the day we shall realistically start dealing with these challenges.Ridiculing others, blaming everything on others, threats and violence will not solve our economic challenges such as saving jobs and creating more opportunities for our people.

The current economic hardships, especially among our youths, are real and these go beyond one’s political affiliations, hence the need for unity of purpose in confronting them.
Anyway, at the end of the day, as Zambians we hold the destiny to ourselves through the leadership choices we make and our prayers and request this time around is we consider merit and not any other considerations for the betterment of our country and future generations.

  1. Your Excellency HH you have my vote. We certainly need to change the current blank leadership and usher in the one which has a proven record of wealth and wealth management. Zambia needs thinkers for it’s leaders, not just “humble” leaders who keep threatening other citizens that they will fall on them like a tone of bricks!

    • Suntwe: You should also look at how that wealth was acquired. I would rather vote for a poor wise man than a rich kelenka

    • Citizens now think we are all the same despite our different backgrounds where some of us have achieved a few things in our own small way through hardworking which is now being ridiculed………kikikiki. Ba HH,we know where your wealth came from……..PRIVATISATION! You got a lot of commissions, assets and shares from companies you were tasked to value and sell…….you did a lot of “insider deals”.

    • @Change, those are the petty issues HH, accusing of stealing or Sangomas at state house. Whatever HH did in his 20s, with privatization should be in fact be promoted as genius minds of a young man.
Look at your ministers or your today PF youths who can’t even afford to pay back loans. You @Change, @Die Hard Under 5 do you have even a sense of understanding privatization?

    • That picture makes me understand as to why he doesn’t smile but I digress! So HH thinks debating Zambia’s economic woes will make it better? Other than talking, what is he doing personally, as a Zambian citizen to make the country better other than perpetual campaigning? He is a wealthy, stingy, pompous tyranny who only thinks helping Zambians can only be done if he where president. I pity people that think he wants the state house to help ordinary Zambians. He maybe wealthy but he has also borrowed heavily and used other people’s monies for his campaigns. He wants to go to state house to loot. He did it before and he will do it again!

    • Ba Change, if you are a dull businessman not everyone else is. HH was a businessman, an opportunity presented itself, he was 26 years old and he went for it. For me someone at that age who’d think that sharply and also be contracted by a whole government because of his capabilities is the kind of guy I would want running the country. Not a known drunk who stole from his client, had his licence suspended and declared he had no vision. Compare the two my dull PF cadre friend. HH employs over a 1000 people and has contributed more in terms of taxes than you will ever in your lifetime. How many people did Lungu empower apart from the bar owners ku Chawama? Get your tiny head out of your butt chap.

    • Ba Olivia Pope, he is paying taxes. What are you doing? And as an opposition leader what do you want him to talk about? What opposition party in the world have you seen actively taking part in policy implementation? How come all you PF supporters never make sense, are never objective and also are just generally dull? How is it possible that such traits can be found elo consistently in any person supporting this dunderhead party with its dull leader? On Watchdog there was an article from an economic student talking about the BOZ interest rate adjustment and its shortfalls. I did not see one comment from any PF cadre. Do you know why? Because of dullness!

    • @Dudelove; I have no respect for someone who reads a badly written one sided Internet publication whose sole purpose is utter gossip and salaciousness! And you have the audacity to call me dull in the same sentence you are quoting ZWD. Talk about the kettle calling the pot black!

    • DUDELOVE; Every working person in Zambia pays taxes. Some on a small scale, others on a large scale. Africans living abroad are the ones sustaining its economy. If you take the time off reading ZWD, Google this fact. As an FYI, business men make the worst leaders. They are often tyrannical and end up being dictators; those traits are apparent in HH. For example when was the last time UPND had a convention or whose idea was it to make GBM VP?

  2. The fact is HH is the majority shareholder of Zambezi sun formerly Intercontinental Livingstone Hotel. it was sold for a song to the third bidder! higher bids were rejected on HHs ‘advice’ and self interest opinions. HH used his dubious business minions to acquire state owned properties at ridicuoulsy low prices without declaring interest in the sale. He has on several occasions lamentably failed to accurately answer questions as to how he acquired his wealth. It is stinking dirty money not worth to admire. Come 2016 we shall expose further the rot the makes this Chief Tribalist HH, to finish him politically once for all. Most Zambians are Not too dull to reason logically!

    • @HHhh why are you blaming HH for being a shareholder in Zambezi sun.It is better to have a zambian as a major shareholder than a foreigner.I have never heard forums on which Hh failed to answer questions on his wealth and besides our late president Sata, who was allergic to corruption would surely have had HH prosecuted for insider trading, just as he did prosecute HH for numerous frivolous charges. I have hope that if HH can make it then the rest of us Zambians can make it.What an inspiration he is to the Zambian youth. Whether he becomes president or not, no one can take that away from him. Infact he would make more money if he wasn’t into politics but he obviously has Zambia at heart and thats why he does what he does.Leave him alone and buy some shares in a worthy venture for…

    • You see, he is so smart. That was 20 years ago, he was in 30s. These are the talented individuals God like helping. A 30 year old selling the entire Intercontinental Hotel on behalf of a government.

    • Why is HH not arrested for all those so called crimes.????
I would like to hear what the PF kaponyas have to say, pleas tell why HH has not been arrested??

  3. Does humbleness means being quite and mute when you are required to do something. Ecl has proved to be a failure in all angles. I cant imagine that in the midst Zambia’s challeges ECL has never addressed any issue concerning our problems rather than saying I will win the elections. Look at HH, he has proved to be our Obama and its as if he is the president in the office.

  4. That’s how wise leaders talk. Compare this with what we are getting from Edgar Lungu and the likes of Chishimba Kambwili. It tells you that the PF is full of empty tins right from the top to the bottom. How can the entire president begin insult people that they are stup.id? And Chishimba Kambwili calling those opposing government as mental patients. It is sad to be ruled by buffoon.s

  5. convince me that the 3 Malawian witch doctor story was not petty talk on your part. You are losing again but that doesn’t mean you will never be president. I know you will be president someday but not in 2016.
    God is still grilling you.

  6. talking is free, some people don’t what they say. this man ichilema is the one in forefront on talking petty issues like EL has invited sangomas from malawi to help him win 2016 elections

    • Compare that one petty issues to the countless ones your Lungu and Kambwili bombard us with. Tell me at least two more petty issues HH has ever brought out.

  7. die hard you are collect.this kelenka ask him how many have benefited from his wealthy, will vote for lungu, like it or not.

    • HH has build a mini hospital, pays school fees for close to 100 students, employees hundreds of Zambians. Now tell us about any of the PF theives and their suppoters, what have they done??.

  8. HONORABLE HYENA HH TODAY YOU HAVE COMEBACK TO YO SENSES AFTER DESTROYING A LOT INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THROUGH YO CARELESS TALKING.YOU CAUSED OUR KWACHA TO LOOSE POWER STARTING FROM THE TIME YOU ADRESSED UK.THIS IS ONE OF YO CARELESS SPEECHES WHICH AS DISADVANTAGED OUR NATION.I KNOW YOU ARE PRACTICING INDIAN POLITICS OF INDIRA GANDI WHICH IS OUTDATED & PRIMITIVE.WAIT FOR A SHOCK IN 2016 WHEN YOU WILL BE HUMBLED WITH TAIL DOWN.

    • We are still blaming other people for our own failures? How can HH cause the fall of the Kwacha? By your own reasoning, it means that the world puts more trust in HH than ECL if they reacted to what HH said rather than what ECL said.
Besides, who has been threatening investors?

  9. HH must clearly state how he plans to revive the Kwacha and not just mention “diversification”. How does he plan to fund his free education slogan without getting into debt? How will the tax policy look like if the UPND gets into office.

  10. Change of government will only bring more hardships. This is why our country is facing these challenges now. So many changes of presidents. Give PF another five years to see whether they will fail or not. Otherwise the economic situation is temporal. Come 2016 who knows, rains may resolve the electricity deficit, kwacha may gain etc.

    • Another 5 years of PF and we will be owing $14 billion. They charged the country rip off prices to build roads getting them selves all rich on the promise investors Will come. To date not one investor has come even if most of the over inflated roads are complete.

  11. Lets face 2016 elections in a free, fair, transparency, corruption free and see who will carry the btwen yo kachakolwa and our kachema, read btwen lines than commnting as if you’re God’s advisors, Sata used to told he would be retired frm active politics by 2011 by mmd cadres, but see hw God works, who won?so dont despise hh’s populary by writng nosense, we ar watching all yo maneurvors

  12. What can HH advise in Glencore We know the routes cause and we only hope future all these loan agreements are sanctioned by Gov.Understand the Timeline HH and see
“‘Glencore Buys Back $400 Million of Bonds Following Market Rout
Glencore Plc said it has repurchased about $400 million of bonds since Sept. 30, after a market rout drove yields on some of its securities to junk levels. The mining and trading company bought back debt maturing mainly in 2016 and 2017, it said today in a statement, without specifying which securities. The company also repaid three bonds amounting to $1.95 billion.
Yields on some Glencore bonds surged in late September and the stock plunged to a record low on investor concern that a commodity slump would impede its ability…

  13. to curb $30 billion of debt. The Baar, Switzerland-based company today outlined a goal to trim borrowings to $25 billion by year-end.”‘
“I would be reasonably comforted by this because it seems the company has enough liquidity,” said Chris Bowie, a London-based money manager at TwentyFour Asset Management, which oversees about 5 billion pounds ($7.7 billion), and doesn’t hold Glencore bonds. “They obviously believe these bonds are trading well beyond fair economic value if they wish to buy them back.”

The yield on Glencore’s 1.25 billion euros ($1.4 billion) of 1.5 percent bonds due in May 2016 was quoted as falling 1.4 percentage points to 3.59 percent on Wednesday. It rose to a record 15.6 percent on Sept. 29, Bloomberg data show.

That on the company’s 1.75 billion of 2.45…

  14. percent bonds due October 2017 was quoted at 13.6 percent on Sept. 29 before falling to 6.1 percent on Wednesday, the data show.
Investors demand an average yield of 7.7 percent to hold dollar-denominated sub-investment grade debt and 4.9 percent for similarly rated euro bonds, according to Bank of America Merrill Lynch indexes. Glencore is rated BBB, the second lowest investment grade, by Standard & Poor’s.

There are restructuring their balance sheet to reposition HH

Gunvor Group Ltd., another commodity trader, in September completed the repurchase of its $500 million debut bonds.

Peter Grauer, the chairman of Bloomberg LP, the parent of Bloomberg News, is a senior independent non-executive director at Glencore.

  15. so what can HH change in view of that capital freight to ensure he saves much needed mining Jobs What mining decisions should we be listening from Him

The decision of bargain and dialogue by lungu to at least have a moral persuasion on the boardroom of mining was right otherwise closure was the option approved It was a capital restructure decision so HH cheat others but when you say correct then you might change confidences even from me

For this one good write up We like your pressure Good for Lungus Money and keeps him in check

  16. There he goes “mr I know it all”. Thank God this guy has been rejected by the zambians.People prefer a person who they feel is part of them. This guy is detached from the masses,no wonder he has lost a staggering 5 times. He is headed for another severe thumping next year.

    • No he has not been rejected by sensible Zambians. Unfortunately the majority voters are people who are swayed by lies. This is the reason why even people who are not fit to hold political end up as presidents in Zambia. It is really a country of chimbwis without a plan.

    • He advising you not to concentrate on petty issues. He is advising you to think in a bid to find solutions to the country’s problems. Do you want HH to think for you. Even the prayers that you held will not solve Zambia’s problems. God does not answer prayers of hypocites.

  17. Fine, HH in most cases tells us what we already know. A serious leader worthy his salt, must regardless of his “present” situation be able to inspire by demonstrating real solving solutions. Honestly, since HH came on the political scene in 2006, I have never heard him make a statement that really makes one to support him. What we see and hear is the same and expected stories from him. Honestly, does HH believe that everything plan President Lungu have for the betterment of our economy must be made public? Certainly not! For instance, everyone knows and saw honorable Lubinda on television yesterday emphasizing that all farmers will be paid in the next two weeks and that the 2016 inputs have already hit the ground. Again HH ignores these good things, why? Has HH commended Government on…

  18. contd
Again HH ignores these good things, why? Has HH commended Government on the improvement of road network in Zambia and specifically Lusaka? Failure to accept to be led is what will ensure HH will NEVER LEAD ZAMBIA, period.
HH is no match to H.E. President Lungu, politically, economically and otherwise honestly. Of course I expect the UPND stoogies to refute this but its the truth. Currently, there a global meltdown and no country has been spared. In these temporal and trying times, thats when true leaders emerge. President Lungu has demonstrated this resilience and he is focused on the job but what have Zambians seen or heard from the opposition especially the Under 5 and chancer HH, nothing! So, which f00l can honestly waste his vote on such character? I even dobut whether others…

    • What do you mean by saying HH is no match to President Lungu economically? How can you compare a successful businessman to someone who was a struggling lawyer who lived in shanty? Jealousy of HH will not take you anywhere. Anyway continue voting for clueless people so that Zambia remains a lousy country to live in. Only senseless people can align themselves with the status quo.

    • @UFO: Its difficult to support your arguements because they lack merit or facts. Just in case you did not know, whatever road is constructed or resurfaced, whatever new hospital, new clininc etc, it is your money as a Tax payer(ie if UFO is a Tax payer) that is being used or will be used to pay back the loan if Govt got a loan for these services. Concerning farmers, what is the current cost of the farming inputs, will us small scale farmers afford the fertiliser? I’m not UPND just in case you think I’m a cadre.

  19. My observation about us Zambians is that we hate successful people, its like we are allergic to success and we will do everything possible to bring down people who succeed in life. The only reason some people hate HH is because he has succeeded where they failed. How can surely someone say HH sold the mines when all sane Zambians know that privatization was handled by the Zambia Privatisation Agency which was headed by Valetine Chitalu.

  20. We need change. Do you know why English soccer league (BPL) is very successful? It is because they do not accept failure the way we do. It is either a striker is scoring or he is defending if he is a defender or else he gets fired. No excuse like our neighbours are also not scoring the way we want to do things in Zambia. Go ahead with your ECL. The man is never inspiring by the way he talks, the way he looks. He and his colleagues have completely failed to show us the direction we are going to in this economic situation. The biggest thing they have achieved is to appeal for sympathy by calling for national reconciliation and prayer.

  21. Zambians kaya.
The truth is that development must start with the change of our mindset. We love negativity and we are ungrateful. e.g from unip to mmd how many universities here built, Unip 27year in power 2 universities, mmd 20 years in only manage to up grade a teachers training college to a university 1.
How many dams have been constructed for the past 30 years in order to generate electricity !
When you are a agent for a company, government etc you give the best advise. Look at the privatization if hh had the interest of the nation at heart,he was not going to accept been part of the process, he would have advised the then government to go in on a 50% to 50% ,which was not the case. The problem in Zambia even after 50 years of independence we are lazy and wanting spoon feeding…

  22. Our country has a majority of ignorant monkeys. Always hiding in the name of “how did he acquire his wealth?”. Zambians are we a cursed nation nangu shani? Why the hell can we not open our eyes?
Bane things are bloody shitty in our beloved country. We need to unite and flash the current leadership out next year. They have totally failed!!! Some of you are busy lazing around trying to blame external forces for your own misery. Our leader has no vision…..alibiletu vision Lungu mwebantu. Stop hating on people who can revive Zambia and realize that the PF has failed. Kwasila.

  23. @Papa: Not all Zambians are lazy, lets not generalise. Many Zambians are successful both within Zambia and abroad. Your lack of understanding of privatisation of the mines exposes you to believe that HH as an individual had so much power vested in him to sell the mines! What a shame!

  24. This is type of headings you find PF kaponya suppoters. On blogs showing The dire state of the economy, you don’t see them offering solutions. Just like their leaders they would rather steal and condem someone offering advice.

  25. WELL WELL WELL,I THANK GOD FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS FOR AND AGAINST THE CHOSEN ONE,THE BIBLE SAYS ALL HAVE SINNED AND HAVE FALLEN SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD,BUT I WISH WE ALL CAN GO BACK TO THE BIBLE AND EXAMINE ALL THE PEOPLE GOD USED TO CARRY OUT HIS PROGRAMS BELOVED LET ME FIRST BEGIN WITH MOSES” WAS HE AN UPRIGHT MAN?THE ANS IS NO,BUT GOD CHOSE HIM TO DELIVER HIS CHOSEN PEOPLE ISRAEL,LETS TALK OF APOSTLE PETER”HE EVEN CUT ONE SOLDIER S EAR BCOZ OF TEMPER,BT JESUS SAID UPON YOU I BUILD MY CHURCH,PASTORS HELP ME THEY ARE SO MANY EXAMPLES I CAN GIVE,MY APPEAL TO YOU ALL IS LET US REMOVE HATRED AND ACCEPT GOD S WILL NOW ITS ECL 2MOROW IT WIL BE HH AND IT ALL WORKS FOR GOOD,LET US PRAY THAT ALL OF THEM FIND IT CARDINAL TO DELIVER PROTECT AND SERVE ZAMBIANS,HOW MANY ZAMBIANS HAVE DIED AT THE…

  26. Michael Snyder has said “Yields on the riskiest junk bonds are absolutely soaring and the price of COPPER just hit a fresh six year low. To most people, those pieces of financial news are meaningless. But if you understand history, and you are aware of the patterns that immediately preceded previous stock market crashes, then you know how how huge both of those signs are”

To petty politicians these stats are meaningless and what we hear if about EL inviting sangomas to state house for him to win and this is not classified petty. They are strong indicators showing that most emerging economies have been hit by global event in the financial world.
