The Condomise Campaign Team, with support from United Nations Fund for Population Agency (UNFPA), will distribute over 144, 000 male condoms and five thousand female condoms in Livingstone as part of run up activities ahead of the national commemoration of World AIDS Day which falls on December 1.

First Lady, Esther Lungu, is expected to grace the occasion which will be held under the theme, Zambia’s future: Getting to zero new infections.

Condomise Campaign Team Chairman Boyd Nyirenda said 144, 000 male condoms and 5,000 female condoms would be distributed in Livingstone as a measure to reduce the HIV prevalence rate in Livingstone ahead of the national commemoration of World AIDS Day.

Mr Nyirenda said the condoms would be distributed between November 29, 2015 and December 1, 2015 and the team would have satellite activities in Dambwa Central and Maramba ahead of World Aids Day to encourage condom uptake among Livingstone residents.

He said Musician Brian Bwembya, popularly known as B Flow, was the team’s Ambassador and would be used as a crowd puller to sensitise people about HIV through his music.

And Livingstone District Commissioner, Omar Munsanje, said official speeches were not enough to reduce the high HIV prevalence rate in the tourist capital as people tended to turn a blind eye towards them during functions.

Mr Munsanje instead called for concerted efforts and strategies such as those that use music as a medium to attract people and deliver behavioural change messages that have a positive impact on the targeted audience.

“I am happy to see the Condomise Campaign Team in Livingstone. With the high prevalence rate here, we need concerted efforts especially those that use music because they send behavioural change messages that have a positive impact on the ground,” he said.

Mr Munsanje stressed the need for all residents to be as safe as possible considering that Livingstone is the tourist capital which receives a lot of local and foreign visitors who engage in different activities.

“As the tourist capital, we receive a lot of visitors. We don’t know what they bring here and what they walk away with, so basically what we want is for our people to be as safe as possible and I believe the Condomise Campaign Team will help us in achieving this,” he said.
