HERIOT Properties Limited, a South African company has announced that it will invest more than US $20 million in the construction of Kabwe shopping mall in Central Province.

Heriot Properties operations manager Martin Ras said the construction of the first ever shopping complex in the provincial capital is expected to start in June this year once the relevant authorities approved the plans.

Mr Ras and other company officials yesterday presented an environmental impact statement to the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) where stakeholders including the Kabwe Municipal Council presented their views.

Speaking in an interview after the stakeholders’ meeting Mr Ras said the group was happy with the positive response it had received towards the construction of the shopping mall.

Apart from ZEMA and the local authority, the meeting also attracted officials from the Road Development Agency (RDA) and the local business houses as well as the general public.

“This is the only shopping mall in Kabwe and we are excited with the positive response that we are receiving from the stakeholders.

“The cost will be some US $20 million and we are just expecting the approval from ZEMA. Once we get the approval, we hope to start in June and by June 2017, the mall would have been opened,” he said.

Among the shops to be housed in the mall which would be built along the Great North Road include Shoprite, Jet, Debonairs, Steers Cashbuild and Mr Prrice.

As well as providing a modern shopping experience, the construction of the mall would create hundreds of job during and after the construction.

Mr Ras expressed confidence that relevant institutions would be able to approve the project in order to enhance status of the town.

Heriot Properties has built its reputation in Zambia and for its great success in the construction of shopping malls.

The Kabwe shopping mall would be the fifth one in Zambia after the group built Kafubu Mall in Ndola, Solwezi Mall in North Western Province, Mukuba Mall in Kitwe and Cosmopolitan Mall in Lusaka.

The company has also built about 19 shopping malls in South Africa.

  1. This is not really news to excite the nation. A $20m mall? What kind of a mall will it be? May be like the two malls in Kalingalinga. What should excite the nation is to hear that Kabwe or Zambia is now cleaner because people will live in better health.

    • Guys, not everything should be about politics. The Shopping Mall is welcome. I remember way back when I visited Kabwe, the place was rural and dusty!! We couldnt even get a decent fast-food outlet to buy a simple thing like a burger! Please build more and more shopping complexes in every town, including Kafue. Why should Kafue residents make multiple trips to Lusaka for basic shopping? Lets all build the country. These investors must just ensure that they employ our people.

  2. Why should Zambians now live with rubbish? Where is Chagwa’s keep Zambia clean and the once a month Saturday cleanning? Look at the following to show you dirty Zambia is

  3. Comment:Shopping malls are welcome but what is needed most are production industries. At this juncture zambia now nids investors that can revamp mulungushi textiles and kapiri glass.
We should b exporting goods so that we earn forex 2 grow our econonomy.

  4. Who has more shares in that company which is putting up shopping malls?
kabwe people are very clever, they have joined a winning team. Careful Zambians, someone is creating employment while in opposition.

  5. Zambians, most of your parents are not the parents you wished to have if you were given an opportunity to chuz who should be your parents. Even then you have accepted them. lets accept lungu the way you accepted your parents and probably give him the suport that he deserves

    • @Puttin: your comments are cringeworthy. I hope your parents did something for you far more than Lungu eg. carrying your foetus for 9 months, raising you up and educating you, at the very least. Now enumerate what Lungu has done for you that you either did not work for or was not from your own taxes? Lungu is an elected leech that has not proved to be even good at running a system that was already working. Lungu is an utter failure.

  6. As a frequent visitor to Kabwe I must confess it has become a vibrant town from the ghost town it used to be in years past. But that contractor and most likely a Zambian contractor that resurfaced the road leading to Katondo Clinic must have ripped off government most likely in connivance with RDA. There are craters on the road as if it was not resurfaced only yesterday.

  7. Another RSA shopping mall opening near you…I bet all the tenants are RSA businesses supplied by RSA manufacturers. Someone will say this is development…really laughable!!

    • Zemuntu you will die in denial. why don’t you accept that someone is creating employment for you. Your Edgar only knows how to open shopping malls.

  8. ..where exactly on great north road will this South African development be constructed..??…why don’t they just demolish the white elephant which is making an eye sore of Kabwe town and construct this mall right there…

  9. Moan moan groan groan! This is progress! Let’s glory in it. So now the smart ladies of Kabwe can while away their free afternoons staring at commodities, luxuries and maybe buy a mac Lipstick(down @jay jay!).

This also is helpful to Tourism. I mean British people never go anywhere there isn’t Birds eye custard, Rice pudding Ambrosia!

  10. Another business plan hands over to a foreign company by the council. This shopping mall was proposed by aZambian company to the council without a response. Do they think that money will be retained in Zambia frustrating nationals in preference of foreign companies? Sadly this is the mentality of our officials keen to get short term benefits when the national interests are being poured down the drain.

  11. If shopping malls meant development, Zambia would really be developed! That aside, the govt is not doing anything about bringing important amenities closer to the people, so if the private sector can do something let them do it. At least I will not need to rely on Shoprite to buy everything anyway. The shopping more is welcome and hopefully the farmer in central province will have a stake in supplying vegetables, meat etc!

  12. This company (HERIOT Properties) is also useless and rubish and I don’t even like it since the day it says that it’ll only constract shopping malls in Kopala and LSK.why not constract Shopping Malls in Chipata, Choma, Livingstone,Kasama,Luapula, and Petauke???…anyway as for Chipata Zhengtai Constraction a chinese firm and the Kenyans investors behind Two rivers shopping the biggest shopping mall in East Africa will constract Mega Shopping Malls in Chipata and are also eyeing L/stone.
