UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) vice-president for political affairs Canisius Banda has been evicted from his home for allegedly defaulting payment of house rentals.
A check by the Zambia Daily Mail crew at Dr Banda’s house yesterday found four men loading household goods onto a Mitsubishi Canter light truck, which was later driven to an unknown destination.
Dr Banda said in an interview that he is not happy that a private matter has gone into the public domain.
Early last month, Dr Banda’s landlady, Chali Tumelo, said that she was going to evict the UPND VEEP after failing to settle his house rentals and that Dr Banda has been a difficult tenant in paying the rentals.
“He has been staying in my house for nine years and paying rent has been very difficult. Sometimes Dr Banda would pay rentals after a month or at times, it takes two months for him to pay. After so many defaults, we decided to give him seven days ultimatum in which to pay, but still he has continued defaulting,” she said.
Ms Tumelo said Dr Banda pays K5,500 per month, although the market rate in PHI is between K7,000 and K8,000.
“The money he is paying is very little. We have not increased rentals because he has been there for a long time. I had planned to evict him but he pleaded with us, and we gave him a chance because at the time, he had lost his wife,” she said.
Ms Tumelo said she entered into a new contract with Dr Banda, but he has continued defaulting, and that when she asked for the payment of rentals, he allegedly went to the extent of insulting her.
“I have all the text messages as proof of the insults he sent to my mobile phone. Dr Banda started treating me as though I was his tenant and he was the landlord. My lawyer and I have asked him to vacate the house on March 31st,” she said.
Ms Tumelo said she has asked Dr Banda to renovate her house before moving out.
But Dr Banda at the time said the allegation was not true and that he has hardly known Ms Tumelo. Dr Banda said some people are trying to taint his name because he is a politician.
This should ring bells on Canicius’ head. HH just wants to use you to cosmetically erase that ka ‘tribal tag’ from UPND and doesnt give a hoot whats his number 2 is going thru simply because you aint Tonga my friend ! Open your eyes especially you non-Tonga followers
This should make it easier for HH in choosing a running mate.

Stop the tribal talk, ldiot! It’s not HH’s responsibility to pay rent for all UPND members. We all have personal responsibilities and HH cannot be asked to pay our bills. Dr Banda can sort out his issues by simply moving to a smaller, cheaper house. It doesn’t even sound as though he has a big family.

Lusaka Times is mocking Dr. Banda. I appreciate Dr. Banda’s contribution to Zambian Politics. The man has sacrificed even his own livelihood. Few Zambians can do this. I trust he will find a way of paying the rentals and also sustaining his livelihood. I’m sure he can make a useful consultant or work in a private health facility part time while he pursues his political career. Great son of Zambia.

Having known Dr Banda as RDAZ leader & his scuffles with FTJ’s govt in defence of his profession I have always thought of him as a very reasonable man. When other docs chose to leave the country he decided to stay to fight the ‘enemy’ within. I think after what Tumelo has done to him (for 30 pieces of silver) the Dr has decided to leave that place. In bitterness Tumelo & her funders are now talking of a canter. How low can any human being sink.

Dr Canicius Banda is now a public figure because he is in politics. Politics bane is a public service job, and hence all individuals who decide to go into public service should be ready to be humiliated publicly
Even if this is true it is a private matter you can not bring in HH Dr Band is an adult and a professional who is able to deal with his personal life separate from political parties.
