Kalaba features in Mazembe win

Midfielder Rainford Kalaba was the lone Zambian player in Confederation Cup action for TP Mazembe on Sunday.

The Zambia captain played the full 90 minutes of Mazembe’s 1-0 home win over Stade Gabesien of Tunisia in Lubambashi in a last 16, first leg match.

Gabesien eliminated Zanaco 4-1 on aggregate in the previous round to reach the pre-group phase where they were drawn against Mazembe following the 2015 Champions League winners elimination from the latter competition.

Midfielder Nathan Sinkala and defender Kabaso Chongo were unused substitutes in that match.

The return leg will be played on May 17 in Gebes with the winner advancing to the Confederation Cup group phase.

Other teams with Zambian interest in the competition are CF Mounana of Gabon who lost 2-0 to Etoile du Sahel in a match striker Alex Ngonga played the full 90 minutes on Friday in Sousse, Tunisia

Goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene was on the bench in Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 home win over Medeama of Ghana on Saturday in Pretoria.
