TWENTY –Four people have been picked up by the Police in Monze following a two day riot that rocked Chisekesi area after a motorist hit a pedestrian and ran away on Monday evening.

The angry residents ran amok protesting and blocked the Livingstone Lusaka Road and stoned some of the vehicles that were passing on the road while business in the area also came to a standstill.

Southern Province Police Commissioner Godwin Phiri said calm has returned to Chisekesi and business houses were now operating.

Mr Phiri said the Police picked up 24 people who were suspected to have been agitating for the protests.

“Of those picked up 14 are males while the rest are females the situation is back to normal,” he said.

Monze District Commissioner Cyprian Hamanyanga assured the residents that speed humps would soon be put up to avoid more loss of lives on the highway.

“We are working towards putting up humps on the highway, to avoid more loss of lives and I have already notified the Southern Province Permanent Secretary over this matter,” he said.

The incident happened around 18:30 hours on Monday after an unknown motor vehicle hit a pedestrian identified as Mark Shingandu 37, who has since died after spending some few hours in Monze Mission Hospital.

Following the protests there was a traffic jump which resulted in some of the motorists travelling from Livingstone to Lusaka wait on the road for longer hours.

Time Buses travelling from Lusaka to Livingstone were also delayed as they were arriving to their respective destinations after so many hours.

  1. It always makes sad reading to lose a life.but rioting isn’t the solution coz you might end up losing more lives.God help us.

  2. LT reporters PLEASE learn some English. Article reads as if written by grade 4 pupil. Sure in this time of computer technology you can not proof read your articles for grammar, very disappointed.

  3. Tongas have just become too violent. Trying to make amagedon . throw the chaps in cells and flash the keys down the chimbuzi.

    • tribal bugger you and ignorant on top of it. Do you think everyone living there is Tonga. If you are in Lusaka does it mean you are Lenje; ignoramous do not divide our country just to keep stealing Zambia s resources.

  4. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Our Police & laws to protect life, property & man hours are appalling. Each time life is lost, next is property & man hours lost & vice versa. There is no use putting up speed humps if our people are not educated & deterred from taking the law in their own hands, saving life, property & man hours. People in Zambia sell, walk, play, drink on roads & drunk motorists & pedestrians alike exercise diving & over speeding on the roads. The victim reached the hospital but his life couldn’t be saved as always though God’s will is unchangeable by human science.

  5. I was at the seen and I saw how frustrated motorists became after spending long hours waiting to navigate Chisekesi. It was shameful indeed. But rioters had a point, they were just asking for speed humps bcoz many have lost their lives on that Chisekesi stretch.
