Former Commerce Minister in the Rupiah Banda Administration Felix Mutati has gone through unopposed to become the new MMD President at the on going Party Convention at Mulungushi University in Kabwe.
Mr Mutati challenged former party President Nevers Mumba who did not even show up at the convention despite being invited to the event.
Eastern Province Chairperson Jacob Mwanza earlier moved a motion to dissolve the NEC and revoke all suspensions as well as expulsions which was seconded by North Western Chairperson.
Mr Mwanza also proposed that the election of the party President be done simultaneously with the election of NEC members which was also seconded.
Returning Edward Mukuka announced Felix Mutati as the new party President at 10:49hrs after receiving only one name for the position.
Over 1700 delegates from all the ten provinces are attending the convention.
Dr Mumba’s faction had obtained an injunction on Thursday to stop the convention from taking place but it was discharged by High CourtJudge Sikazwe discharged the injunction on Friday evening leaving the Mutati faction without any impediments to holding the convention.
Former National Secretary Mwansa Mbulakulima expeditiously moved the program so as to preempt any moves from the Mumba faction which might derail the process of putting new office bearers into office.
Former Party and Republican President Rupiah Banda  graced the occasion which is expected to close tomorrow.

From what I gather, Heroes stadium has a capacity of between 30,000 to 40,000 people. That is less than half the population of Monze. The population of Lusaka is pushing towards 3 million. So when you excitedly say Heroes stadium is filled to capacity, I do not understand what the source of your excitement is because that is just less than 1 hundredth of the population of Lusaka. In any case, a lot of attendees are not even Lusaka residents.

The capacity of Heroes Stadium on the stands is 60,000. If you went there, as I did, you will discover that, in fact, the people who went to Heroes were far in excess of the maximum seating of the stadium capacity because I personally even had a problem finding a place to sit. Moreover, there were thousands who couldn’t even get into the stadium, but were stranded outside. Just contrast this with the UPND rally at Freedom Park in Kitwe. A friend who went to the UPND rally and also watched the PF rally in Lusaka told me there was no basis for comparison between the two rallies.

Miyanda have decided to come back to their party and keep the dream of our nation alive again. The current Republican President is a very humble and honest man but working with a lot of members who did not understand the vision for our country. I applaud Judge Sikazwe for discharging Nevers Mumba’s injunction. The latter has destroyed MMD because of his arrogance, materialistic trends. Arrogant because he does not listen to his party’s wishes and bulldozes it. Materialistic because he knows he has nothing going for him so the only way is to hold onto the MMD Presidency and try by all means to ingratiate himself to EL. Hoping that he will be given a position. What happened to the rumours about a possible diplomatic position and a merger between PF and MMD?
