MMD president Nevers Mumba says his party has resolved to return to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to declare that he is pulling out of the presidential race.
Dr Mumba said ever since his decision to form an alliance with the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND), his party had resolved to have one flag bearer in the August 11 elections.
He said the UPND and its leader Hakainde Hichilema would be the main body of the alliance and that the MMD would help the team in ensuring that the alliance records victory.
“We will soon go to the ECZ to reverse the decision on me standing and we only hope they could refund us so that we can use the money for campaign logistics,” he said.
Earlier, ECZ spokesperson Cris Akufuna said as far as the commission was concerned, Dr Mumba was standing as MMD president in the August 11 elections and that he had paid a deposit.
And Mr Akufuna said the nomination fees were non-refundable and that whoever paid should not expect a refund after a change of mind.
He said the commission had not been informed whether Dr Mumba was withdrawing from the race or not and that he would only give a concrete position after the close of nominations.
“Dr Mumba is a candidate and we have his name among the nominees for presidency, so the new twist of him supporting another candidate is not much of our business since what we know is that he is a candidate,” Mr Akufuna said.

Will you please explain why HH is on the boards of the companies he helped to privatize and we know were undervalued? Sour grapes! Just give him his money back!! If Mumba was supporting the visionless Chegwe Wrungu, that would not have been an issue and ECZ would have refunded the monies without questions. ECZ will have to meet any costs in his name since he is not standing.
Nevers Mumba had not paid the full amount so even if ECZ refuses to refund he should not appear on the Presidential Ballot becoz he has not paid the full amount. As part of their rigging plans the PF had planned to take away some votes from HH’s tally and give the votes to Nevers Mumba. The whole point is to reduce HH’s votes and give them to someone else so that HH does not win. This is a trick imported from Zimbabwe and Uganda.

This Akufuna is full of confusion. To participate as a Presidential candidate one has to pay the full amount of the fee. Its only UPND and PF candidates who paid the full fee so ECZ told us yesterday. If a candidate who had paid half of the fee decides to withdraw from the race how does he remain as a candidate with his name appearing on the ballot paper when he has disqualified himself by not paying the balance of the fee? With more than 2 months to go b4 the poll date why should Nevers Mumba after officially withdrawing from the rave remain a candidate and with his name appearing on the ballot? Does it suggests ballot papers have been printed already? I smell a fish here. Shades of rigging? ECZ must explain in the light of Akuduna’s comments.
Nyoni – ECZ acts in good faith that when you pay a deposit you will follow through – especially at the high level of presidential office. By the part payment, candidates locked their positions. That is why if you died after nomination is complete, your name will still appear on the ballot. Pastor Mumba is just a disorganized, arrogant man – now I understand why late MC Sata wanted to nail him. Please stop singing the broken LP of rigging.
