Thousands of Tilapia fingerlings were released into the Kafue River yesterday as part of the KCM annual fish restocking exercise in commemoration of the World Environmental Week activities.

During a fish restocking exercise in Kanenga area of Chililabombwe, KCM General Manager Corporate Services Howard Chilundika, said KCM would continue to support issues of biodiversity, including fish restocking exercise.

Since 2008 KCM has planted 230,000 fingerlings into the Kafue River and streams near its operations on the Copperbelt to help restore fish stocks in the water bodies, he said.

“The restocking exercise has economic benefits and it is important for us to share benefits from the mines with surrounding communities. We do this every year,” he added.

“The programmes add some great value to the nation in many ways such as boosting the food basket and fostering sustainable livelihoods,” Mr. Chilundika said.

Mr. Chilundika called on the fishermen and communities to avoid illegal fishing activities which deplete fish stocks in rivers.

He said KCM is not only involved in fish restocking but supports tree planting. The company has planted over 87,000 trees within its operations and in the communities.

Research Officer – Aquaculture at National Aquaculture Research and Development Centre (NARDC), Ian Bbole, hailed KCM for its continued support to the fish restocking exercise, saying the programme has ripple effects not only on the community but the nation at large.

He urged the community to guard against illegal fishing activities to allow the restocked fish to multiply and grow.

A community representative, Handson Sichone, who depends on fishing for his livelihood thanked KCM for sharing the benefits from the mines with the local people.
“As people of Kanenga we depend on fishing and agriculture for our livelihood. We appreciate that the mines are also caring for the local people who are not in formal employment,” Mr. Sichone said

He echoed sentiments by all stakeholders that the community should desist from illegal fishing to protect the fingerlings for future generations.

    • wake up from your docility…go and pollute a river in Europe or States..you will see what will happen to you. ASk BP they will tell you!!

  1. Even if you restock how does that help if KCM is still polluting the river and there is still uncontrolled over-fishing with mosquito nets. Who is Ian Bbole? Who is he working for? KCM…don’t we have own people at UNZA and NRDC?
KCM is case has been given the green light to go ahead in the London courts hence you see them on a PR exercise only a gullible **** would not see through this…they will stand before the judge and say look what we are doing for that failed state and its poor malnourished poor.

    Wake up people!!

    • Jay Jay,

A good deed deserves praise, regardless of who is doing it. If a convicted murderer saved your life, would you dwell on his status or just say than you?

    • Praise for what? Its this selfsame docility I talk about… Is that what your White-man’s bible teaches you Afrikans? Teaches you to turn the other cheek and reconcile…do you know what that sulphur KCM has been illegally dumping in the river has done to the whole biosphere, water tables, municipal drinking water, miscarriages, waterborne diseases etc.
Meanwhile they have racked in billions and they brag about it in India and London…do you know how much BP is going to pay for 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico? $20 billion includes $5.5bn in civil Clean Water Act penalties and billions more to cover environmental damage and other claims by the five Gulf states and local governments. It is the largest environmental settlement in US history.
What do you think would happen to KCM in…

    • Do not try & come on this platform to belittle other bloggers. U think u are more clever, but u r mistaken. I have followed most your comments on this platform & they usually luck tangible, thoughtful insights. Mining on the KCM shafts has been done for close 100 years now. The methods have not drastically changed & pollution was even worse under ZCCM. Even Anglo American had its fair share, but non of the later did anything. Am not in anyway supporting the current KCM management, but will say good for every positive deed despite of the originator.

    • “zamani Boza”, what is the point of “YOUR PERCEIVED GOOD DEED”, if KCM HASN’T BLO..ODY CLEANED UP THE RIVER???????????????????????????????
IT IS A PRETTY DUMB & STU..PID EXERCISE, simply to APPEASE THE DUMB & STU..PID!! Go there next week, & the poor fingerlings will all be dead in the polluted river!! GOING TO SCHOOL, & APPLYING THAT KNOWLEDGE TO REAL LIFE, DOES INDEED MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!! Pouring live fish into a bucket of poisoned water – is NOT ROCKET SCIENCE!!! THINK BEFORE YOU ARGUE SENSLESSLY!!

Vote Zambia FORWARD!! VOTE UPND!! Abantu baya!!

      #Chagwamustfall!! #PamaFikuyabebele!!

      I thank you!!

  2. It is iddiots like Glenda and Howard working for KCM and pulling assss up our asses!

A lot of nonsense……………..KCM is a shiiiit company bent on f****king people’s minds bafikala

  3. Most of our people rowing in our dug out canoes aren’t prolific swimmers. I have been hoping that government would as a matter of urgency, roll out a basic swimming and life saving skills programme, and also set up Life Savers in our major fishing areas. Officers, if possible, can also monitor/encourage the use of life jackets. Our old high schools could also have their swimming pools refurbished (ZESCO permitting) and restoration/construction of community swimming pools. KCM, for their part, need to do more than restocking tilapia (bream) before their CSR attempts are fully appreciated by stakeholders.

  4. Howard Glenda vuvuzelas for the Indians. How do you expect aqueous life to survive when you are busy polluting all the area stream and rivers???

  5. Howard Glenda vuvuzelas for the Indians. How do you expect aqueous life to survive in there when you people (KCM) are again busy polluting the same streams and rivers in the area???

  6. Please restock Luapula and Chambeshi Rivers and Lakes Bangwelu and Mweru with their original fish! Amatuku, Imintesa, Tiger fish, Imilonge, Pale, etc!
