A business survey and opinion poll commissioned by the Zambia Institute for Public Analysis and Research and conducted by research firm Ipsos shows that 4 in 5 Zambians feel that the economic situation has worsened in the last 12 months.

The report titled in the eye of a storm “The impact of the economic slowdown on the labour market in Zambia” noted that jobs are a major priority for most Zambians.

It reports that most Zambians surveyed identified improving job opportunities as the top priority for how the government should improve the economy.

It also shows that the main impact of the economic slowdown on the Zambian labour market has been job losses with 9.3% of Zambians reporting that they have lost a job and were unable to find a new one.2.8% reported of going from having no job to acquiring one.

73% of firms reported experiencing at least a 25% fall in profits and that small firms have been hit the hardest.

The most common response from business has been to increase their prices, followed by decreasing production while large firms were more likely to impose a recruitment freeze or effect redundancies.

A third of businesses surveyed reported laying off staff in the last year and a further 6.1% of Zambians polled reported falling wages, while 6.6% say that they received a pay rise over the last year.

The report shows that the main losers of the economic slowdown are those with low education and young people, particularly recent university and college graduates.

Around 9 in 10 Zambians surveyed say government has most responsibility to improve job opportunities and 62% think not enough is currently being done.

About a third of Zambians and businesses were however upbeat about future job opportunities.
The business survey covered 173 private sector firms, purposively sampled to ensure a good cross section of different sized firms from different economic sectors.

Face-to-face interviews were conducted in Lusaka, Copperbelt, Southern and Central Provinces between the 5th and 20th of April 2016.

The opinion poll was nationally representative and based on a sample of 1,510 Zambians.

    • AND THIS LUNATIC LUNGU AND HIS FELLOW THIEVES DELUDE THEMSELVES TO THINK THAT THEY HAVE WORKED AND HAVE IMPROVED STANDARDS OF LIVING FOR THE ZAMBIAN PEOPLE. THEY ARE BUSY SHOUTING EMPTY WORDS SUCH AS SONTA AND SELA TUBOMBEKO. THESE MENTAL CRIPPLES THINK THAT ZAMBIANS ARE F.O.OLS. THEY THINK PEOPLE CAN NOT DISTINGUISH BETWEEN A WORKING GOVERNMENT AND A LOOTING GOVERNMENT. EVERY ONE KNOWS THAT LUNGU’S GOVERNMENT IS A LOOTING GOVERNMENT. NOW LUNGU AND HIS MINIONS ARE BUSY BRIBING THE HUNGRY ZAMBIANS IN EXCHANGE FOR A VOTE. BUT LET ME WARN YOU THAT WE SHALL EAT YOUR BRIBES, BUT WE SHALL NOT VOTE FOR YOU. WE SHALL VOTE FOR CHANGE, WE SHALL VOTE FOR HH AND THE UPND TEAM. WE WANT GENUINE LEADERSHIP. VIVA CHANGE VIVA! VIVA HH VIVA!

THIS REPORT IS ABOUT THE LAST 12 MONTHS WHEN LUNGU HAS BEEN IN POWER. ALL THESE THINGS HAVE HAPPENED DURING HIS TIME YET KBF WAS CLAIMING THAT LUNGU WAS UNBEATABLE. I FELT THAT WAS TAKING ZAMBIANS FOR F00LS. KUYA BEBELE COME 11 AUGUST 2016.

  1. Didn’t god answer your prayers after all the fasting and overnight prayers on 18/10/2015?
It seems all what came out of that was more Zambian bastard children and new HIV infections !!

  2. Was chatting with a friend who works in one of the chain stores. He told me business is hard people don’t have disposable income. When we say we cannot eat roads people are saying sontapo. One can only happily sontapo with a full stomach. Well fed with nutritious food first, then these infrastructure second.

  3. Note that the economy worsed in past 12 months, just imagine another 5 years, with lungu, with all these loans already accumulated, with what are they going to develop the country with? I fear ooh!

  4. “Malawian President Peter Mutharika told millions of Malawians that are starving to stop depending on maize and eat grasshoppers and mice in order to cope with the current food shortage”

  5. Yet the kaponyas HH, Techilema, kudos senior citizens, ba Simenon will tell us it’s grobo ,justi sontapo.

  7. Dont misinterpret the survey imwe ba UPND tekanya. The economy is bad everyone knows that. But is not the same as changing government. First people except HH understand the world economy, second people dont think that HH is a viable alternative, third people know that every country has its ups and downs, fourth people want Edgar to continue rather than bring someone to conduct an experiment with their lives with zero chance of a good result, fifth a UPND government of HH and GBV just cannot be a successful alternative to the current government, sixth people appreciate what the current government has achieved and will do a lot more to build on that solid foundation. Lastly they know where the debt money has gone because it can be sontad. Anything else to add HH?

  8. I think PF cadres live in a parallel universe. No matter how much evidence you present of our governments incompetence they are able to defend it. Amazing loyalty.

  9. T0ngas are poligamists and who do they want to manage their extra marital affairs? Those who think things are worse in Zambia, let them try America.
Why is Trump and UK are against migrants? Better still let them try and go to Angola. Change your lifestyles and adapt or die complaining!

  10. Voxi populae Voxi Dei…..I hope I have got the Latin correct……the Voice of the people is the voice of God.

Zambians, Lungu~PF won’t be in the ballot box to whip, maim and brutalise you as is now the case.

If you are genuinely aggrieved, vote for the opposition.

But if Lungu is sincere and has not stolen K15 million, has not borrowed $10 billion, has not increased prices and corruption then vote for him.

  11. The 1 Zambian out of 5 are PF leaders and some of their cadres. On 11 August 2016 we will remember our hunger as we vote!

  12. This (the economic realities) is what we should be debating about. It has nothing to do with which tribe or region one hails from. The ratio of 4 in 5 converts to 80%, this is most significant. Being a researcher, the sample size and scope validates what the opposition consistently ask for: What is the PF solution to our debt burden and high cost of living? Unfortunately with IMF conditions waiting ahead of us, there seems no plan that our fellow Zambians (the PF) have to offer after August. We need more loans (from China maybe) to try and keep up with the other myriads of loans we have accumulated. Thus, the desperate need to vote for change in August, and which we will do most unreservedly.

  13. Lungu’s corrupt and looting govt is in denial. It does not want to talk about the damage and the ruin that it has caused to now suffering Zambians. What is more worrying is the lack of vision and capacity to fix the economy. Considering what Lungu’s looting govt has done since he came to power it will be suicidal for Zambians to give Lungu another chance to ruin them further. Lungu’s record is appalling and deserves a red card and nothing else. Lungu and his corrupt, violent and looting govt must go. Lets vote for Team HH ,GBM and UPND for change, without fail.

  14. Such statement is the work of the CIA.
I speak to Indian friends in Zed, they all say that THEY ARE BETTER OFF UNDER THE PF GOVERNMENT.
    Checks from ZRA has decreased
    Getting permits is easier
    There are less labour complaints
There is less policing of “sub-standard” goods on the shelves
All good for business in the lovely country!!

  15. Imwe bakachema HH, what can you give Zambians,? You criminals, you want to come and steal money from the government the way you did in mines imbwa Iwe.
