Police seal off the venue of the scheduled rally in Chawama

I deeply regret the death of a female civilian who was shot dead by police in the central business district of Lusaka after the UPND cadres clashed with police. The action by police was irresponsible, unnecessary and must be condemned.

After enjoying peace and unity for a long time and being the flag bearers of peace on the African continent, our country should not be turned into a restless state. The police are well trained to handle crowds, therefore using of live ammunition on defenceless citizens right in the centre of the city should not be justified. The action police took was not only punitive but put lives of many civilians in danger. The police had other means they must have used to disperse the cadres.

I call upon the head of state President Edgar Lungu, who is also commander in chief to ensure that every citizen is safe and protected regardless of tribe or political affiliation. The president must immediately address the nation and provide a way forward as the situation is now becoming desperate.

We will have ourselves to blame as a nation if we allow our country to catch fire at a time like this when we should all promote peace as we go towards the general elections. We need to put our political interest aside and make sure that we work together in stopping the violence. We must be mindful of the women and children who are more vulnerable in times of civil unrest.

I further call on the electoral commission of Zambia ECZ to move in quickly and deal with the situation as mandated by the constitution through the electoral act. The electoral commission of Zambia must cancel all campaign rallies and meetings if the concerned parties fail to conduct themselves in a manner that will not promote peace and unity. The ECZ must do this in the interest of preventing more deaths and preserve the peace and stability.

All peace loving Zambians must stand in unity as one and condemn any violent acts. in the interest of promoting democracy, It is incumbent upon all of us to ensure that we act responsibly and adhere to the provisions of our supreme laws.May God bless Zambia.

    • The police were wrong. These cadres were not armed and did not deserve to be approached with live ammunition. The trigger happy police officer who shot this lady must quickly be arrested and sentenced to death by the courts. In any case, why cancel a rally at the last moment? Poor judgement in everything.

    • THIS LUNGU IS THE PERSON THAT DR. MUTESA, AFTER PRAYING TO GOD FOR GUIDANCE, DECIDED TO SUPPORT. I WONDER WHICH GOD DR. MUTESA PRAYED TO FOR GUIDANCE TO SUPPORT LUNGU. THIS MAN, LUNGU, IS A CRIMINAL WHO WANTS TO CONTINUE TO STAY IN STATE AT ANY COST. IF I HAPPEN TO DIE AT THE SAME TIME WITH LUNGU AND IF GOD ACCEPTS LUNGU TO GO TO HEAVEN, I WOULD PREFER TO GO TO HELL THAN SPEND ETERNITY IN PARADISE WITH LUNGU AND RB. THESE TWO ARE DEVILS IN DEEP LOVE WITH MONEY. THEY WANT POWER TO MAKE MONEY.

    • KANGANJA AND PHIRI SHOULD IMMEDIATELY RESIGN BUT UNFORTUNATELY THEY HAVE NO MORALS. THEY ARE HEARTLESS. THEY ARE DEVOID OF ANY HUMAN FEELINGS. THEIR LOYALTY IS TO LUNGU INSTEAD OF GOD AND THE PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA. THEY SHOULD KNOW THAT THE PEOPLE THEY HAVE SLAIN IN COLD BLOOD TO PLEASE THEIR MASTER LUNGU WERE CREATED IN GOD’S IMAGE. THEIR BREATH OF LIFE CAME FROM GOD. THEIR BLOOD, LIKE THAT OF ABEL, IS CRYING TO GOD. THE CRIES AND TEAARS OF THEIR PARENTS AND BELOVED ONES HAVE REACHED GOD’S EARS AND EYES, AND HE WILL NOT SIT IDLE. IN DUE TIME HE WILL ANSWER ACCORDINGLY.

  1. We blame jamason the M7’s young brother and we sure these are advise he is given frequently trotting to Uganda to meet the east African devil

  2. No politician is worth dying for, it is your family that will remain suffering. Let us adhere to the law of the land and vote for the party of our choice. Violence does not pay whichever way you look at it.

  3. All this should be blamed on the UPND leadership. They are thirsty for blood and will do anything to undermine the Zambia police.

  4. You cannot justify ZRP shooting a girl running for dear life, unarmed and Innocent. What threat did the girl pose to warrant the Police to use live ammunition to kill her in cold blood?Instead of protecting innocent lives the Police shot these UPND supporters with live bullets. Who gave these orders to shoot? Police do not use live ammunition to control crowds. There is a third force here which is PF armed militia death squads planted in ZRP,wearing Police Uniforms and issued with ZRP guns. There lies the problem. The man claims he is humble and Godly but the opposite is true. He is heartless, satanic and a hypocrite of note.

    • @Moyo: I concur with you 100%. There was a clear intention by the police to kill from the outset.
      1. Police carried live ammunition to control a crowd.
      2. The young woman was shot in the head while running away from trouble not towards it. When you aim at someone’s head your intention is to KILL. These 2 things are evidence enough to me that the intention of the police was to maim and if possible kill those protesters.
The question is on whose orders were they acting? Even during the violent protests about the murders in Lusaka 2 Months ago the police were managing without using live ammunition. Who changed their rules of engagement this time to “SHOOT TO KILL”?

  5. ECZ Commissioners are appointed by Lungu. The Chairman of ECZ is a first Cousin to RB and RB helped Lungu win the state Presidency and in turn Lungu rewarded RB for a job well done by appointing Justice Esau Chulu Chairman of ECZ. It was all done on a Wako niwako and kumodzi kumaawa basis. So what can the toothless ECZ do when the person who appointed the Commissioners is the one involed in the rigging? Nothing much becoz ECZ is extremely compromised and conflicted.

  6. Lungu is to blame. Kanganja is to blame. Kaizer is to blame for giving guns to PF cadres and giving them police uniform. The death of this young lady should spark a revolution through the ballot and eventually see all those responsible be kept behind bars in years to come.

  7. The Head of State must surely come out strongly on these issues that are making our country degenerate into this state of affairs. Who are the current advisers to the President, leave much to be desired. where are our former Heads of State to give proper advise to the President. Surely why cancel a political rally that has been advertised for days at the last minute, what was the security threat?? Mr Inspector General of Police now hiding behind criminal inquiries, this could have been avoided and handled more professionally. We are not safe in our own Country after enjoying peace for 50years.

  8. Every political party has a right to campaign in peace. This is not the country our forefathers fought for. Yet Kaunda cannot condemn this violence because he is eating out of Lungu’s hand. He wants a state funeral. He even had the audacity to declare Lungu as a very good president. I weep for Zambia. We have been dragged down into the pits. Killing of innocent lives does not bode well. Spilt innocent blood! A Christian nation! Undeclared it! The church is quiet. Why?

  9. We should just ban political regalia and even rallies. Let us just see people. Let politicians use the media to campaign. All the millions spent on crisscrossing the country could move us from being one of the hungriest country in the world. Let us be innovative and avoid mediocrity.

    • Are people in Zambia or abroad? Cancel rallies then how do you relay your message to the masses? Public media like deadNBC is not covering the opposition, what mechanism will they use to reach the voters apart from rallies right in their residential areas.

  10. It is unacceptable for police to use excessive brutal force on unarmed youngsters. It is also unacceptable for politicians whether in rulling party or opposition to influence and encourage youths to turn agaisnt each other. It is purely evil and has halmarks of jungle politics. Politicians are there to serve and not to divide God’s people. On the grand scheme of things, the blame lies squarely on the national leadership under whom the police service falls, you have blood on your hands. This is not the Zambia we envisaged seeing. Can this surely pass for a peaceful Christian Nation? I dont fink so.

  11. The guns and bullets issued out by the Police Command on the material day must be accountable for by those they were issued to. The shooter and murderer cannot hide behind the veil of crowd control. The blood of the dead will continue to cry out for justice from the ground, and the nation needs to be cleansed of this inimical curse. Justice must be done.

  12. Much as we would want to put the blame on police for shooting, u should also advise civilians to avoid fighting the police. .! Upnd is to blame in this case. Too bad that an innocent life has been lost wen hh and gbv’s children are safe in south Africa…! Mhsrip.

  13. If only some of you blaming Lungu where at the place were all this happened, some of us saw this from start to end these upnd cadres lack morals and they think doing cho chise with the law will help some egocentric guy in power

  14. When the police do not use force, UPND and other parties do not respect them. They dont even respect reasonable force. This unfortunate incident will teach us all especialky UPND cadrea a lesdon that police are to be obeyed and more important we should all exercise peace. HH should alsp tell his cadres how to behave not always denying the obvious and thus misleading the cadres. HH understands the law and should teach his cadres, not mouring with croc tears afyer a poor lady is dead. HH isvthe only leader who has not condemned violence or warn his cadres to be law abiding.

  15. lungu can kill i guess its true what they say about impotent sick men. you don’t have to go far look at the other sick neighbor mugabe killing his people… too much sperm in the body is a dangerous disease.
