The Zambia National Women’s Lobby (ZNWL) strongly condemns the killing of a female United Party for National Development (UPND) supporter,Mapenzi Chibula, by the Zambia Police in Kanyama yesterday.
The ZNWL further condemns the use of live ammunition by the Police in dispersing unarmed UPND protesters in Kanyama, which resulted in the killing of Ms Chibula and injuring of other UPND supporters.
The use of live ammunition in yesterdays’ incident was uncalled for because the UPND supporters who were being pursued were unarmed.It is extremely unfortunate that such a young life has been lost. This tragic occurrence could have been avoided if the police used other means of weapons to disperse the UPND protestors.
It is quite disheartening to note that, again, it is the woman who has suffered the consequences of violence, paying with her dear life. The death was unnecessary and an affront to the tenets of human rights which we aspire to as a country.
We call on the Inspector General of Police to institute an inquiry into the shooting of Ms Chibulo and ensure that the officer who killed her in cold blood is arrested. It is clear that the Police officer who shot Ms Chibulowas aiming to kill her because he shot her in the head and not other parts of the body.
We would like to remind the Police that they exist to offer protection to the citizens and not to be the ones killing citizens.This is a clear case of an extrajudicial killing, which is described in law as a killing of a person by governmental authorities without the sanction of any judicial proceeding or legal process.
We further condemn the political violence that has characterised the country, which if left unabated will result in voter apathy which will negatively affect the validity of the elections. Women who form the largest segment of the population will shun voting if the violence continues.

You cannot condemn the guarantor of enduring national peace, instead condemn desperate politicians now resorting to unorthodox methods of using disillusioned cadres as guinea pigs for their reckless political experiments. They want to create an atmosphere of intractible conflicts to push for a Government of National Unity (GNU). All efforts of prodding cadres for violence are wishful preludes for a GNU which will not happen in Zambia. Lungu will get a comfortable ruling mandate to form his Government with legitimacy democracy can give.
The moral of the story is; stop being violent if you want to avoid incidences like this. This goes to UPND. May her soul rest in peace
The title of this story is quite useless. The ZNWL should not condemn this incident just because it is a female who has been killed. That is being dull. They should condemn it because human life, whether male or female, has been lost because of overzealousness by the police and hidden dictatorship.

The killing of the female UPND cadre Mapenzi (RIP) should be blamed on the irresponsible UPND leadership who want to use defenceless, innocent and unsuspecting citizens to fight their battles whilst they themselves hide in safety. There is just no justification by the UPND , for instance, to ferry UNZA students clad in UPND T-shirts from the UNZA education car park to Chawama after 17 hours way after their rally had been cancelled by the police in consultation with the electoral commission of Zambia. For there is no way these UNZA students could have been taken to a rally after 17 hours. It is clear the intention of the UPND leadership was to use UNZA students and their other cadres to go and defy the police.
For how else does one explain the use of live ammunition by the UPND cadres against the police in the CBD when police used tear gas to disperse UPND cadres. Therefore, the death of Mapenzi should be blamed on the irresponsible UPND leadership who are ready to sacrifice the lives of other people’s children whilst their children enjoy the safety of their homes. Shame on Nevers Mumba. Shame on HH, GBM and other UPND leaders for their crass selfishness and lack of respect for human life.
UPND could have been wrong but that doesn’t give the police licence to shoot at citizens. Poor girl didn’t even have a stone, why the trigger happiness?

Only in africa,were a police shoting occurs and minutes later the IG,justifies the killing,in a well and normal governance democratic system the IG was suppose to issue an inqeury investigation to ascertain wht actually happened.most of the time the justification by police is wrong.since mayoral are now executive let them be the ones to appoint provincial commissioners and there deputies.the pyramid type of governance is outdated.

Dallas Massacre was a result of the blacks been agrieved by Dallas Stae police shooting two black men.One sniper who served the US army in Afghanistan took it upon himself kill white policemen.The same here very soon people who are agrieved will be targeting innocent men and women in Zambia Police to score even.Our society is too polarised because of the ruling part and its sad we are heading to the 1950s or early 60s.Very soon we will be like DR Congo,Central Africa Republic or even Rwanda of 1994.Please PF government and your Police own up and preserve the peace that we have enjoyed.
Womens Lobby, you forgot to advise upnd that they have tested the police enough. Do you know yhat if police did not act many more women, I mean innocent women.not upnd cadres, would have been lost? You should worry more about the threat to.lives that these Upnd cadres pose rather than just react for one female cadre. Stop the crocodile tears and condemn the root cause. As long this clueless HH and GBM are in top leadership of UPND, forget UPND ever ascending to power, NEVER. UPND leadership is under sieze by the cartel and the earlier they realise it the better. I grieve for this country when I read comments that justify the killing of an unarmed young lady by a politicized, overzealous, unprofessional, compromised so-called police force. Is it a wonder that we are where we are? – – – with people who can think that an innocent human being in the process of running away and shot by police using live ammunition when there is no threat to them or other citizens, has herself to blame or the party she belongs to. How uncivilised are you bast..eds? The likes of YOU are the causers of strife on the continent. Zambia needs to be ‘rescued’ from such vermin and its political ‘drummers’.
