Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba speaking in Morroccoo

The Zambian Government has decided to withdraw its recognition of the so-called Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), a partially recognised state that controls an area in the Western Sahara region.

Foreign Minister Harry Kalaba announced that Zambia has since broken off its diplomatic relations with the entity.

During a joint press conference with the Moroccan Minister Delegate to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Nasser Bourita on Saturday in Rabat, Mr Kalaba said “the Government of the Republic of Zambia decided to withdraw its recognition of the self-proclaimed RASD and cut its diplomatic relations with this entity.”

Mr Kalaba went on to say that the Government of the Republic of Zambia expresses its “strong support for the efforts of the United Nations under the auspices of the Security Council and the Secretary General to reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the Sahara conflict, in line with Security Council resolutions.”

  1. THIS IS BUCHIMPATEMPATE AT ITS WORST. THIS IS EXHIBITING INCONSISTENCY AND CONFUSION IN FOREIGN POLICY. IT GOES TO SHOW THAT THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. THEY ACT ON IMPULSE. RECENTLY THE PRESIDENT VISITED SAUDI ARABIA AND SOON AFTER HE WAS ENTERING INTO SOME SECURITY ARRANGEMENT WITH ISRAEL. WE ARE BOUND NOT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY BY OTHER COUNTRIES AND FRIENDS IF WE HAVE ANY AT ALL AS WE DON’T SEEM TO HAVE A CLEAR FOREIGN POLICY. WE JUST GO, LIKE DUST, WHERE THE WIND BLOWS.

  2. Ubuchushi always begging for money these are the results. There hasn’t been any proper explanation. Similarly when Lungu went to Saudi Arabia he made a statement referring to concern regarding the spread of Iranian ideology.

  4. Not too long ago lungu even received the ambassador for Western Sahara.

    Now he has reversed.
We told you this PF GRZ is like a car with 1 forward gear and 5 for in reverse to accommodate their inconsistencies.

  5. Best decision ever ! The best thing for Zambia is to stay neutral and let the UN take care of it. Morocco is to an important Western based economic actor on the African continent to be in odds with. Given the more then probable collapse if its Militaristic neighbour…

    • Neutral you say ..when you are sleeping with the Arabs and Israelis in a space of one week…really laughable.

    • Well, it depends on which Arabs you want to sleep with. You play your cards to you advantage and sleep with the right Arabs. Sexual pleasure depends on which prostitute a client sleeps with. Not every prostitute will give a client the satisfaction they want. So there is nothing wrong with what Zambia has done. After all, some Arabs are in bed with Israel, for example, Egypt.

  6. How do you expect the Zambian government to respect the sovereign rights of other minorities when in their background is the unresolved Barotseland issue?
Remove the log in your eye before you attempt to remove the spec in your friend’s eye.

    • You seem to have a bigger log than the Zambian Government. Are you not aware that the Barotse Royal Establishment recently met with the President over the same issue? Never in the history of Zambia has any President been so ready to resolve this issue that President Edgar Lungu. This issue is already on the cards. Watch him and see his God given wisdom. Post election Zambia will see the winning team of ECL solve the Barotse issue to the satisfaction of all. He is a man of his words and his legacy will SONTA the Barotse issue as one of his achievements.

  8. Ka @Kabuntu, holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel said something to the effect that when you keep silent you encourage the tormentor; when you don’t speak up for the oppressed you encourage the oppressor. See there is NO NEUTRAL you id.iot! You must see how your darker-skinned brothers are being brutalized in that part of the world and then see if you will say anything like that. What is the UN anyway!? It has countries that are SPEAKING UP for the oppressed and not being neutral – so your sil.ly country will side with the SILENT in the UN. Si.lly!!!

  9. Sell outs dont you know why Morocco is not a member of the AU? Its because the AU or the rest of Africa recognises western Sahara. Is Zambia changing policy without consulting its parliament or people? Did Lungu consult? Did he ask Kaunda why Zambia took this stance? Blind political rascals!

    • do you know that the countries which respect itself do not recognize western Sahara as a country because it lacks the constituents of establishing a country, some of these constituents is to have lands (to have sovereignty over lands) those separatist live in Algeria and not in Western Sahara. so to recognize a country it needs to exist fristly in reality through the lands it owns. what if the people decide the integration with Morocco? Did you put this hypothesis in your mind? what would be the reaction of your country, it’s shameful. secondly, the population are uncounted. do you want it a country of 1000 person? yes, that’s a possiblity that could be raised since the people are uncounted offecially by the UN. there are many other constituents to build a country what I gave are only…

  10. Africans never learns. For the arabs, they never stopped enslaving you. In fact, the Arab word for black is Abeed ( slave)

    • I know that you are not black and particularly not Zambian. You are more of a slave to your own hatred for blacks than blacks are to your perceived slavery to Arabs. I can assure you, in this century, God will move Africa from being the tail to the head of this world and I hope you will be alive to grind and gnash your teeth in disbelieve and regret. But most importantly repent of your sins and start living.

  11. He is a weak leader.

There are rumours that this Wrungu is actually a Moslem.

1st WRUNGU condemns Iran after Saudis give him discounted oil.

Today we are hearing about the Morocco/Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.

Morocco is not a member of AU because AU recognizes Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. Morocco has flooded its citizens into Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic so much that there are more Moroccans than the Sahwawi in their own country.

    • If thats the case then Wrungu has no balls. As a state you cant succumb to blackmail. That principle governs why governments refuse to pay ransom for kidnapped citizens.

  14. Big error, this is a wrong policy. The Saharawi s have the right to be independent since they were a Spanish colony and not Moroccan land. Morocco violated the Africans agreed principles of respecting the frontier s inherited from the colonial period.
Morocco also claims Mauritania and part of Algeria…

    • Hello Jose,
I am replying to your comment. Kindly note that France an Spain divided Morocco in 2. Sahara was under Spain occupation. Allow me to correct you : Morocco does not claim Mauritania and a part of Algeria (even that in the past, some of their territories were une the Cherifian Empire domination). This so-called “Western Sahara Republic” movement is the result of the European colonialism, and its leaders benefit from the help of the neighbour (Algeria) because of an influence war in the sub-region between the 2 big North Africa Countries.
How come Algeria, Tunisia, Lybia have Saharawi population and territories? No one finds it weird? Well, as a conclusion, I sadly notice that as Africans, no matter our ethnic backround is (BTW, Morocco’s biggest population is not Arab, but…

  15. when you come to see how many Arabian/Islamic countries that claim that Morocco occupy Sahara, you find only Algeria which has its own agendas in this area, so how those separatists want to make an Arabian republic and the most of Arabs and Muslims do not recognize them !??

  16. The Western Sahara Community, who is sovereign south Morocco, is happy with the wise decision of Zambia to let the UN do the job. The UN is the fair body who can deal with the Western Sahara issue opposing Morocco to algeria. Nobody else should decide. Africa Union lost credibility when it admitted the algerian non-sovereign Sahrawi Republic against the article IV of the 1963 AU Charter. East Africa states should follow the example of Zambia to let the UN process move forward. It’s a very complex issue legacy of cold war. algeria is behind the scenes since day 1. Africa states should take responsability to stop the algerian maneuvers inside the Africa Union. Thanks. Ahmed Salem
