UPND President Hakainde Hichilema says the country has one of the worst health indicators globally because government has failed to prioritise health care for the majority.

The UPND leader accused the current government of not owning up to their promise of spending 15% of the total budget on health as the share has gone down to as low as 8.3% under the leadership of President Lungu.

Mr Hichilema said it is possible for the country to do better in the sector and that one of the ways to improving the sector was by re-allocating funds to critical areas fundamental to the wellbeing of the nation.

“Zambia has some of the worst health indicators in the world. Why? Because government has failed to prioritise healthcare for the majority. Whereas the PF promised to spend 15% of the national budget on health in their manifesto, under President Lungu the share has fallen to as little as 8.3%.

“Is it possible for Zambia to do better? Absolutely, just compare our performance to that of Botswana. We have an under-5 mortality rate of 75 per 1,000 live births, more than double that of Botswana’s 36. Our maternal mortality of 398 per 100,000 live births is nearly three times that of Botswana’s 140.

“How can we do better? The UPND will build a healthy nation by re-allocating funds to critical areas that are fundamental to the wellbeing of our nation, such as water and sanitation. Our people are still dying from treatable diseases on a daily basis because they cannot access clean water; compounds are hotbeds for cholera outbreaks, while in the rural areas people are sharing water with livestock because there is no alternative,” he said.

He further explained that his Party plans to raise the standards of care in the sector by supporting healthcare workers as well bringing care closer to communities through extension services by environment health technicians and telemedicine.

“The UPND plans to raise the standard of care through supporting healthcare workers and bringing care closer to communities through extension services by environmental health technicians and telemedicine.

“Additionally, as a government that plans ahead we will support disease prevention measures and undertake preparatory measures for responding to epidemics.

“To ensure we have the resources we need to achieve our plans we will tackle corruption and cut spending on wasteful items, such as frequent by-elections and big budget international travel seen under the PF. We will also re-evaluate the amount spent on VIP healthcare abroad, which was recently revealed to total an average of K3.6 million per person,” he said.

He added “Under our watch spending on health will be for the benefit of the majority, not just a few well-connected individuals, because building a healthy nation is a key stepping stone on the path to a united, prosperous and equitable Zambia.”

  1. When GBM beats his wife he takes to South Africa for treatment. What’s your plan for healthcare in Zambia.

    • PF cadres cannot refute the facts that Mr. HH is dropping. All they can do is insult becuase that is easy to do. Let us face it, folks, PF will continue leading Zambia down the drain because they are not educated and they are dull. What we need are leaders who have exposure to the developed world like HH. By the way on another note, why has PF not disciplined Guy Scott who is decampaigning their president contrary to their party laws???

    • Copy and paste the Southern province pattern on voting, why should I voto for this HH when his tongas only vote for themselves, this time around ni nega nega formula all the way. 2015 Lungu 0 nega nega 18, 000 hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm guys olo ni tribalism nifyi so even the PF nega nega officials voted against their own party, kwena ni tribalism iyi zoooona

    • MEANWHILE LUNGU ON THE OTHER HAND STILL REFUSES TO EVEN TAKE A TOUR OF UTH!!! WE NEED CHANGE!!!!
      CHIBE CHIBE LUNGU ALEYA.
RAIN NO RAIN PF MUST BE VOTED OUT!!!!

  2. Ku bwetuka bwetuke chabe now its health from mines kikiikiikii. Tell them that you will provide free medical services from a simple headache to cancer kikikikikiki.

  3. Kaponya (HH) musata niyo ko you are stiyupid and dull.

FO0LISH quack with no vision only Utopian promises

    • ha ha ha ha Mr Kudos. Don’t suffocate man! Your dislike even smell so hard. Let other people also practice their democratic rights.

  4. Kaili go for a debate with Tasila to explain how you are going to increase the budget allocation of 8% to 15%. Kikiki. This under 5 president is really misplaced with this so called 10 points plan. Does is even know that under the current constitution, we are going to have 30 ministries and how is going to split the meagre resources from the budget since he won’t be collecting money from tax defaulters?

  5. Yes HH we need improvement in health sector and general management of public resources. But the greater part is what the PF is doing already by building more hospitals, clinics and Health Posts to bring health services to the people. You need to admit that something has been done and then explain how to do it better. Expenditure on health has reduced but has happened to other sectors? You may even note expenditure on health infrastructure has grown! And please don’t just compare Botswana with GDP/capita of $16,036 to Zambia with a GDP/capita of $4,064. This difference also influences the gap in social services enjoyed by citizens of these countries. Mr.HH please tell us how much wastage you will save, how you will use it in each sector to show us your direction!

  6. Instead of directly responding to HH’s ‘how’ plan, all you can sink to are insults. Is it a wonder that the country is where it is? Its no secret that the national health system is in a disgraceful state. Needless deaths due to lack of medicines, equipment, negligence, corruption, de-motivated staff, general under-funding and no prevention policies. At least provide the basics for the majority while you sort out the economy. No nation moves forward when good health is for the privileged few and you have an unhealthy lot.

  7. By the way, health is not just about structures. Its a lot more – including prevention policies and good sanitation. In spite of the so-called health posts, why do you have cholera year after year, people still dying of malaria and having to provide most of your own requirements as patients?

  8. If you are blind, you cannot see the good around that has been done! Someone will soon have no reason to hold on to that failed seat! Watch this space!

  9. @ Mr Kudos, THANKS TO INTELLIGENCE. WE HAVE FINALLY FOUND OUT WHO YOU ARE AND THE COUNTRY WHERE YOU POST YOUR INSULTS FROM. BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR LANGUAGE. BEFORE YOU POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA, JUST REMEMBER THAT TODAY YOU CAN BE SMART BUT TOMORROW IS NOT YOURS. YOU WILL REGRET FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE..TIMELY ADVICE.

  10. Well said HH our health delivery system has collapsed. If u go to UTH u will see that it is no longer a hospital to save lives but a death bed. Govt needs to prioritize health and its good HH realises this and intends to do something about it if he is elected President. Since Lungu has no plan to fix the economy and the Health delivery system lets retire him on 11August and give HH a chance to implement his ideas. We cannot continue with a Chipante pante way of doing things. Forward with HH,GBM and UPND.

  11. Ah….but Zambia’s population(16’212’000) is eight times bigger than that of Botswana(2’038’228), you see what i mean?

  12. Only a fool will agree with hh on health services under pf…! To the contrary, pf has improved access to medical services spreading to all remote areas..! Hh will only mislead his dull followers..!

  13. HH is so dull as you can see, how does this Kachema compare Zambia to Botswana? What is the population of Botswana compared to Zambia?
I thought this Satanist could have compared Zambia to some country with similar demographics. There you go, ati I will fix the economy? HH you suck!

  14. The statistics HH is talking about when translate in Population, will find that Zambia may be even be better than Botswana. What determines is the Population of Certain geographical area. Zambia is 13million people and Botswana is 2 million People. Now make ratio and do compare those statistics. From there, you will know whose telling the truth.
