No one will be displaced from the Market, MP assure Ndola Marketeers

Ndola Central Member of Parliament Emmanuel Mulenga has assured marketeers at Chipulukusu market that no one will be displaced from their stalls after learning of land within the market having allegedly been sold to a developer by a former councillor.

Mary Bwalya, a marketeer, alleged that land within the market where their stalls are situated has been sold and they have been threatened with demolition.

“Land in this market has been sold and we have been told that we will be moved to pave way for construction of shops. So we are wondering how we will continue to trade and feed our families. We have been selling in this market since 1989, so why should we be removed,” Bwalya asked.

But Mulenga said the Ndola City Council (NCC) will be engaged to get to the facts of the matter at Chipulukusu market.

And in Twapia, Njanji market chairman Davies Lunda said the marketeers are happy that soon they will be able to trade under a shelter unlike the stalls they have been conducting their daily businesses.

Mulenga has set aside K500, 000 for the building of market shelters and ablution blocks at Njanji and Old Chipulukusu markets in Twapia and Chipulukusu Townships respectively.

The construction of a market shelter and ablution block each at Twapia and Chipulukusu markets is expected to commence before the end of this week.

Mulenga revealed that he was using his personal money to show appreciation to the people in his constituency for voting for the PF in the last month’s general elections.

“I’m using money from my pocket as a thank you to everyone in the constituency for voting for President Lungu, for voting for the MP, the executive mayor and the councilor. So we decided to put K500, 000 on the table and see what we can do with it.

“We need to make sure that people have an ablution block, there are no light and people need to trade longer hours at the market, I will provide that. I want to make sure that our mothers make profit by trading longer hours at the market and take care of families,” he said.

He added that works on both the market shelter and ablution block at the two markets will be completed in two months.

This was Mulenga’s first visit of Ndola Central constituency after been elected as PF Member of Parliament.
