Government says it is determined to revamp the Textile and Garment subsector because of its vast potential to spur economic diversification.

Commerce Minister Margaret Mwanakatwe said the sector also offers opportunities for technological innovation and adaption for the engineering sector in the production of handloom equipment.

Speaking when she officiated at the International Trade Centre regional dissemination workshop on African Cotton Promotion and Value Addition, Tuesday, Ms Mwanakatwe said Government will continue to promote the implementation of policies and programmes that support the growth of the textile and garment sector in Zambia.

She said her Ministry is to this effect revising its Commercial, Trade and Industry Policy in order to have a more integrated and coherent policy intervention that support growth and development of Zambia’s trade and industrial sector.

    • Our friends in East Africa are talking and commissioning high speed railway networks and business parks we are still stuck in the 70s..

    • This is coming from the same Woman who was saying that a National Airline is very viable and they were going ahead to start one !! Now its textiles … hehehe … she has a very good choice of Industries to Target for sure. Maybe she is the type who picks on Toughest ventures to pursue and later have the perfect excuse for failure !

  1. It would be a miracle to develop textile industry when many factors are against its economic viability.
1 How will this industry compete with Chinese imports that are several times cheaper.
2 Having been in a coma for years without investment, how will we regain competence in this sector when we have had no investment in human capital to acquire relevant skill, investment in technology to lower unit cost of production by employing scale and efficiency
3 If we employ protectionist measures such as import ban of textiles or high taxes on imports, these will just hurt the consumer since the consumer will now have to buy these expensive local products from his/ her dwindling income.

    I beg to be educated.
