Failure to pay civil servants on time is tantamount to abrogation of human rights-MEF

Movement for Economic Freedom (MEF) President Mainda Simata said the failure by the Patriotic Front (PF) Government to pay civil servants salaries on time is tantamount to abrogation of human rights, reports Pan African Radio Journalist Hermit Hachilonde.

In a walk in interview today, Simata said it is a criminal offense for any employer in Zambia to delay workers’ monthly wages.

He said the Employment Act Cap 268 of the Laws of Zambia has a provision relating to the employment of persons and the delay in paying civil servants.

Simata said Government has failed to comply with the provisions of the employment Act and anyone who fails to abide by the law shall be guilty of an offence.

He has since urged the PF Government to immediately pay all civil servants on time adding that government should pay the civil servants all arrears without fail regardless of the situation.

Simata said it is unacceptable in the modern-day Zambia for civil servants to wait for half a month to get their emoluments.
