What aftermath of the fire at Lusaka City market
Aftermath of the fire at Lusaka City market

STATEMENT ON THE LUSAKA CITY MARKET FIRES

Zambia today has woken up to billows of black clouds over Lusaka City Market. Livelihoods of thousands upon thousands of families are in jeopardy. Whatever the investigations will reveal as the source of these fires, shall not change the pain, the agony and the helplessness our people feel.

We stand shoulder to shoulder with all the affected families. We share in your pain and trust the Lord God of comfort shall give you peace through these “fires” of life. In view of this catastrophic development, we call on government to find a way to systematically provide some compensation to the affected families to allow them to start afresh.

This is the role of government in the face of tragedies of this nature globally. We cannot turn our backs against our own people.
We would also like to recognize and commend the spirited work of our fire services, who with very limited tools continue to jeopardize their lives in an effort to put out the angry flames.

While the whole nation waits for the investigative agents to indicate the source of these fires, we call for calm and reasonableness. The police must institute a wide open investigation extending to wherever the evidence takes them. As of now, we don’t know whether it is arson, careless electrical wirings or a careless smoker. There is therefore no need for finger pointing at this stage as that will only frustrate the efforts of the investigative agencies.
Our focus as a nation must be to assist the families that have woken up to the loss of their entire livelihoods.
May God save our great nation.

Nevers Mumba
President, MMD

  1. Ba Nevers Mumba, TEKANYA NG’ANGA IKUSANGE.
The WITCHES ARE CAPABLE OF GENERATING A DRUM FULL OF CROCODILE TEARS.

History will soon expose the WOLVES that have invaded the Zambian political landscape.

  2. NEVERS MUMBA,WHICH GOVT ARE YOU ASKING TO HELP THOSE THAT ARE AFFECTED?YOU HAVE PUT CLEAR THAT YOU DO NOT RECOGNIZE ECL AS THE PRESIDENT OF ZAMBIA AND TODAY YOU ARE CALLING UPON HIS GOVT TO COME IN AND HELP.
YOUR PAY MASTER PROMISED ARMAGEDDON AND ALL THIS IS POINTING TO HIS PROMISES.YOU ARE WRONG PERSON TO TALK ABOUT THIS.
UPND IS TERRORIST GROUP AND THEY ARE BEHIND ALL THIS,PERIOD.

    • @ patriotic, whose the government if not ecl? mwilasabaila naimwe. The government is ECL if he says help them then the so call government will help them if not ninshi ka black not even your HH can help them

  3. How Zambian politicians are narrow can be seen in this comment. “Zambia today has woken up to billows of black clouds over Lusaka City Market.”
For most of them Zambia is Lusaka. Chisokone market in kitwe always burns and noone tells us Zambia has woken up bla bla bla. There will be no sympathetic words for a suffering Senanga, Solwezi Mporokoso citizen. Zambia is bigger than Lusaka. Cry for the whole country!

  4. Nervers you and hh have planned this for a long time. You even planned to come and offer a comment after your plans have been executed. You are the ones who’ve been talking about amagedon and volcanos. Who doesn’t know that your group is behind these fires. Just wait for the findings. Your upnd is now going to be deregistered. Your party was registered to offer checks and balances not sabotaging infrastructure and terror.

    De register upnd soon.

  5. Ba Nevers, while it is noble and human to help those traders who lost their merchandise in the fire, it is also an act of un fairness to other marketeers in different parts of the country who have been in similar situations. Markets, especially in Kitwe, have gone up in flames every year but we have not heard you talking about compensation. How special are Lusaka traders compared to the others in the rest of the country who equally gashed their teeth when faced with such tragedies? If the government has to come in to compensate, it should be across the whole country. However, in cases of arson, it would be folly for any government to come in and bail out the marketeers as this would encourage lawlessness.

  6. When business gets tough, some resort to fraudulent insurance claims or political compensation. When politicians recently announced their selfish intent to lavishly spend over $20million USDs at a wrong time as this, who knows? Some shrewd and wicked minds may have seen an opportunity to misbehave and cash in. It is important that politicians stop making too many careless pronouncements. Everyone in business must make sure they have insurance cover as opposed to expecting handouts. Tax money is not for charity pay outs!

  7. Poor wiring and overloading could have caused the fire.I strongly believe this was not Arson or terrorism. The people who lost next time but insurance which is part of doing business

  8. Nevers Mumba should not f00l us.Zambia enjoyed total peace before his friend was arrested.its 100% upnd cadres who are burning Zambia with support from evil men such as Nevers Mumba,Mulongoti,GBM,Mukuni, etc.these f00ls are taking us for granted.their desperation for state house is getting beyond.HOW MANY POOR ZAMBIANS HAVE LOST THEIR LAST NGWEES IN THAT INFERNO CAUSED BY UPND?THOUSANDS.all because of one man HH?GOD MUST PUNISH HH OR WHOEVER IS INVOLVED IN THAT SEVERELY!!zambia existed before HH was born and it will exit long after his death.SO WHY SHOULD WE ALL SUFFER BECAUSE OF ONE F00LISH POLITICIAN -HH?GOVNT PLEASE HIRE FBI from USA TO CAME AND EXPOSE EVIL UPND TACTICS FAST!!our OP is a let down because its full of bantustans who sympathise with HH!!

  9. If someone did not behave fo.oli.shily in Mongu the country would not be experiencing all these tragidies.

  10. Maybe Nervous is a UPNDonkey who does not know what the real red clad UPNDonkeys are up to. I don’t think they share with him the secrets of the inner circle. But maybe he just wants to appear innocent. Or maybe he wants to appear relevant or patriotic by implying that be they fellow (UPN)Donkeys or not the arsonists must face sabotage or treason charges. Or maybe he must watched carefully, or maybe he should be arrested together with other UPNDonkeys. Or maybe we should rearrest underfive….just thinking a few maybes….after all I am not a donkey and therefore my reasoning is far superior as I cannot burn my own infrastructure for any single donkey compared to the millions of Zambian people.

  11. MR BJ PLEASE WHEN NEVERS MUMBA CALLS ON THE GOVERNMENT TO HELP THE AFFECTED PEOPLE HE IS NOT TALKING ABOUT THE PRESIDENT MR ECL ALONE HE IS TALKING ABOUT THE NATION AS A WHOLE NOT GETTING MONEY FROM ONES POCKET BUT FROM TAXE PAYERS ACCOUNT THE SAME TAXES THE AFFECTED MARKETEERS WERE PAYING TO LOCAL AUTHORITIES LIKE COUNCIL AND ZRA. FAILING TO RECOGNIZE ECL HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH USING TAXE PAYERS MONEY TO HELP THE SAME TAXE PAYERS PLEASE DON’T BE LIMITED IN THINKING PLEASE.

  12. MR IMPREZZA YOU ARE VERY RIGHT. LET THE GOVERNMENT CHANNEL THE INTENDED STATE HOUSE RESOURCES TOWARDS THE AFFECTED MARKETEERS. LETS HELP OUR BROTHERS USING THE ABUNDANT RESOURCES POLITICIANS ARE WASTING ON THESE UN NECESSARY PROJECTS AND TRIPS.

  13. Comment:Ladies and Gentlemen, what is our contribution towards the desired Goal of peace in Zambia. Is what we say now building or destroying. I believe your response and mine in every situation has influence in our society. If you are a youth help build Zambia today, if you are elderly give hope to the nation and together we may meet the future. Be the change you wish to see. THIS IS ONE ZAMBIA, A NATION FOUNDED ON LIBERTY FOR ALL INDIVISIBLE BY NATURE OR CIRCUMSTANCE.

  14. Okay after all has been said and done, the first question one needs to ask is; are these markets insured? Or are these carders just running these markets without any proper management systems’ in place like insurance against fire or theft?

  15. In bemba we say “ubushiku umukote aluba ne chimbwi cinya imfwa ” simply put IF A Hyena defecates gray hair on the day an old man dies, it’s assumed it’s the hyena which killed him.

    • “imfwa’ or ‘infwi’. The two are quite different and will imply very different meanings or interpretations to the saying. Imfwi will imply when an old man dies, all hell will break lose. Trouble is to follow in the village. Whereas, Infwi will imply the Hyena or some other suspicious character in the village is responsible for the death of the old man and there is evidence to that effect.
What confuses things, even more, is that both interpretations will equally make sense in the current context.

  16. Again when you threaten a person that “I will kill you ” and that person is found dead, you’ll be the principle suspect.

  17. He has forgotten that he said all youths must rise against the government! How were they to rise up? Treasonable comments! This man must be next to Under Five.

  18. Lets co-existence, and let the Love of God engulf us. Lets reflect our true value, and the purpose of existence. The purpose of existence in my view is to worship and honor God; and secondly to carry forward an ever-advancing civilization. The may God heal our land! ….

  19. I wonder where this culture of dull care ism has come from in Zambia. Never Mumba has spoken very well in a balanced manner, befitting a sensitive time such as this. In fact President Lungu himself has seen it fit to act accordingly in the same manner. Now because some stupid bloggers want to see things in only two colors of red or green, you start saying rubbish. Who among you have said anything more intelligent or mature than what this innocent patriotic Zambian called Nevers Mumba?
