Police suspects arson in Chilenje market fire

Share

The police have suspected that arson is suspected to be the cause of the fire that destroyed goods worth over K50, 000 at Chilenje market on Tuesday.

Police Spokesperson Esther Mwata Katongo has said they received a report of fire at Chilenje market around 05 hours in the morning.

She however said it was not clear what time the fire started as it was only discovered around 05 by some traders from the same market.

The fire brigade ran out of water forcing traders to join in with buckets but the fire was only quenched after the fire brigade made a second trip after fetching water.

Katongo said 200 by 90kg bags of charcoal were completely destroyed in the fire and said police suspect arson from the preliminary investigations though investigations have not been concluded.

  1. How can fire brigade run out of water to stop a fire deliberately started by pf to warrant state of emergency. Lungu thinks he clever. By finding reasons for state emergency he is in effect finding reasons to clamp down on opposition rights and freedoms hence giving himself an edge in next election. Lungu is a p.r.i.c.k

    • Facts please not suspicions.

We are better than this. This is best functioning Government there is ever been

      I have a PhD

    • SO, WHERE WERE THE POLICE WHEN A SUSPECT SET FIRE TO THE MARKET. ARE OUR POLICE REALLY NOT JUST SLEEPING AT NIGHT? HOW CAN SOMETHING SO COMMON AND WELL KNOWN CONTIMUE TO HAPPEN ON A REGULAR BASIS? CAN’T OUR LAW ENFORCRMENT WINGS BE IN ANTICIPATION OF ARSON AND OTHER SERIOUS CRIMINAL OFFENSES? ARE ALL THE POLICE IN ZAMBIA JUST ON ROAD BLOCKS?

  2. This is getting out of hand ! How can every fire be arson ! Bunch of dunderheads. Fire brigade runs out f water – this is just another admission of how everything is failing !

    • Well since when did Zambia have a season of market fires? It never happens unless someone has promised the nation Armageddon. The police are also very dumb. Even when they have the luxury of a state of emergency they can’t perform. Kanganja must be fired. Soccer fans must not watch Nkhwazi. Don’t greet any policeman

  3. @MUSTAFA
You are unreasonable and you live in fools paradise. How are things failing? I bought a 25 kg mealie meal at K62. Kwacha still very strong. Inflation remains single digit. Wake up its new dawn

  4. Upnd sieze fire. HH will be released only if found innocent. How are we going to vote for you if you torch our business. Just know that for every fbuilding you torch you lose popularity by 10%. By 2021 you will be diminished. People already know that all fires are been lite by upnd. What a shame. How are you going to campaign to the same marketeers. Under 5 thinking sucks

  5. Why do our fire brigades always run out of water? Could it be leakages on the brigades or in management?

  6. HH OVAL HEAD with your knowledge kf the fires i suggest that you head up the arson squad of the zambian police force. You know who has done it prior to investigations and arrests made. Wow wish i had your perception and you evsn know from here in australia. Are you studying fire management here

  7. We keep having similar incidents of fires, whilst article 31 is in play, Where are the Police ? Other than stepping up the number of Road Blocks

  8. “The fire brigade ran out of water forcing traders to join in with buckets but the fire was only quenched after the fire brigade made a second trip after fetching water.”

Really laughable and you are spending $20m on a multi storey City Market with a Fire Service that can not put out simple charcoal fires….funny that fires start in the morning when people are going into the market ..not at night and the lazy Police are swift to conclude is arson!!

    • There is need to educate charcoal traders on fire safety, personally i feel they are so negligent, yet they handle fuel product called charcoal, i don’t understand why they are not regulated by ERB. This country needs critical thinkers and investigators and not soothsayers whose conclusions on issues are purely based on the throw of sangoma’s bones.
