Minister of Higher Education Nkandu Luo has directed the Zambia Qualification Authority to put an end to people getting fake honorary degrees. Professor Luo says it’s shameful that some people have gone to an extent of buying degrees so that they can be called Doctors.

Prof Luo she will soon issue a policy statement to halt the trend. The Minister explained that doctorates are earned and not acquired through dubious means. Professor Luo was speaking at the Mulungushi University 9th graduation ceremony where First Republican President Kenneth Kaunda was conferred with doctor of philosophy degree in Political Science.

Prof Luo Said Mulungushi University has demonstrated how it is done by citing the various achievements by Dr. Kaunda when conferring him a doctorate. Professor Luo said government has changed the modalities of identifying vulnerable people to benefit from bursaries and loans. She told graduands that officers will now be recruiting from provincial centers.

And First President Kenneth Kaunda has challenged universities in the country to play a constructive role in preventing tragedies occurring in the world today that are fuelled by hatred arising out of the artificial differences of religion, race, colour and tribe.

Dr Kaunda said Africa appears to be receiving more of these troubles that are now threatening the very fabric of society.

ZANIS reports that Dr Kaunda was speaking at the 9th Graduation Ceremony for Mulungushi University shortly after he was bestowed with the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Political Science by the country’s third public university.

Mulungushi University conferred Dr Kaunda with the Doctor of Philosophy Degree ‘Honoris Causa’ in Political Science in recognition of his contribution to the liberation of Zambia and the entire African continent.

He said the world is full of turmoil evidenced from the terrible sufferings, needless conflicts and wars among and within countries.

Dr Kaunda urged universities in the country to establish think tanks that could carry out researches to examine the root causes of conflicts in Zambia and the African continent.

The former President said it was sad that even little children who are supposed to enjoy being citizens of their countries are dying in millions along with loss of property.
He advised the universities to mainstream the core values of national unity, stability and harmony into their academic programmes for the benefit of the country and the continent.

He also advised the students to be responsible, accountable, and ethical in order to remain relevant to the global dynamics and the nation.

Dr Kaunda who described the conferring of the honorary doctorate to him as a profound experience recalled that Mulungushi will always be remembered for the country’s journey to self-rule and the bonds of friendship with some African leaders.

Meanwhile, Mulungushi University Deputy Vice Chancellor Judith Lungu described Dr Kaunda as an illustrious and rare member of the league of visionaries whose names are etched in the annals of Africa’s history.

Delivering the citation in honour of Dr Kaunda for the bestowal of the honorary Doctorate Degree by the third public university, Dr Lungu said the first republican President was a towering figure in the movement to emancipate Africa and its people from oppression and humiliation.

    ….the list is endless.

These people are not right in the head to buy doctorate degrees. It does not work that way.

I mean where did we go wrong as a country? We have fake doctors, fake prophets, fake leaders and politicians, fake Chinese products…..what is left that is real in Zambia?

    • It makes those genuine ones like mine start getting questioned even by |diots on here.

She is right in that sense. I suffered to have mine.

      Thanks

    • …hunger, poverty and corruption are real in Zambia. Back to the lecture at hand, I wonder why honorary degree holders are not differently classified.

In my view, the terms “Doctor”, “Professor” should only apply for academic achievements in medical and scientific fields. Everything else should fall under category “Masters” or simply “Maestro”.

    • She should have started by halting Mulungushi University from conferring an honorary doctorate to a former ruthless dictator.

    • Dr. Nkandu Luo should have started by addressing Kenneth Kaunda as Mr. Kaunda and not as Dr. Kaunda. Regardless of the fact that KK did did so much for our liberation struggle, the fact remains that that he never got his doctorate through through research and academic scholarship. Nelson Mandela got his honorary doctorates from reputable universities like like Oxford an Harvard but was never addressed as Dr. Mandela. Why do the Kambwili and Lusambo types insist on being addressee as Drs. when they didn’t even clear their five O levels?

    • @Facts, Nkandu Luo does not have a PhD or a doctorate degree herself. She is professor by proxy because of gender issues. She was promoted to professorship to show gender balance in Zambian high learning institutions.

    • Because Ms. Luo is responsible for that organization/ministry called Higher Education you fault-finder! If not her to set and encourage certain standards in our academic, then you should? Your mama????

    • It becomes fake if a person is honored wrongly; meaning he/she did not render any outstanding services at all in the respective field – academically or otherwise.

  2. Fake degrees, fake firetruck tenders ,fake (shoddy) road construction, fake economic growth (downgraded by IMF) and fake women’s hair & nails.

  3. All is just fake and I remain to wonder what the minister is trying to say. Fake Chinese products, fake human hair, fake fire trucks, fake ambulances, fake girlfriends, fake degrees, fake teachers in school, fake MK books in schools, fake oh no list is just endless. Lastly fake 2016 petitions.

  4. An honorary degree,[1] in Latin a degree honoris causa (“for the sake of the honor”) or ad honorem (“to the honor”), is an academic degree for which a university (or other degree-awarding institution) has waived the usual requirements, such as matriculation, residence, a dissertation and the passing of comprehensive examinations. The degree is typically a doctorate or, less commonly, a master’s degree, and may be awarded to someone who has no prior connection with the academic institution[2] or no previous postsecondary education. An example of identifying a recipient of this award is as follows: Doctorate in Business Administration (Hon. Causa).

  5. Professor in dropping centers for former prostitutes. I guss people who knows how some people acquired their professorship knows the people am talking about.

  6. Luo is education minister telling the nation that there are people buying degrees. In the first place who are they and what has she done about it? That’s the tragedy of Zambian politics. In the developed world this would have been the end of her political career for issuing such a self implicating statement. Meanwhile we have a whole long list of fake teachers in the system. That’s what she should be talking about. When Chiluba was persecuting KK she was quiet but today she’s singing praises of him. Old Zambian politicians have no principles. Zambians need a new crop of leaders not these recycled and selfish personalities who are just there to fill their stomachs. They suck.

    • Boza, even in the developed world do buy and fake qualifications and nothing happens to Education Secretaries.

In fact this garbage is worse in places like Nigeria and India. They go abroad, attend a Community College and go back home with fake Doctorate degrees. It is world wide priblem and I am glad Zambia (through the Minister responsible for Education) has started taking this problem seriously!

  7. An illegal Minister trying to be relevant. Why not just say Kambwili bought his Doctrate and his gown looked like he was auditioning for a cartoon character in Hollywood? Harvard, Oxford etc honours people based on practical work done. It would be appropriate to contact University with questionable practices!

  8. …Universties…with questionable practices! Meanwhile, what are you doing pretending to serve as Minister of education when your position as MP was nullified. Any chance of a moral stance and let the law take its course? Act like a professor please!

  9. Among the most prominent fake Drs. in Zambia are the ones listed below. The Zambian media are the worst culprits in promoting these quacks because they keep on addressing them as Drs.

    Roger Chongwe
    Cosmo Mumba
    Rozious Siatwambo
    Nevers Mumba
    Chishimba Kambwili
    Bowman Lusambo
    Joe Imakando
    Dan Pule
    Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba
    Patrick Kalifungwa
    Pinalo Chikwanakeni

  10. The best way of exposing these quacks is to ask them the following questions:
    1. Where did you get your first degree?
    2. Was the first degree obtained with a bare pass, credit, merit, or distinction?
    3. In which year did you obtain your first degree and in which year?
    4. Did you do your master’s degree after your bachelor’s degrees? Where?
    5. Did you undertake a doctoral program after your master’s degree?
    6. Who were your doctoral supervisors or members of your doctoral committee?
    7. What was the title of your doctoral dissertation?

    • Do you know what a Honorary Degree is? Go and ask the P.Diddy, Sir Alex Ferguson, Oprah Winfrey and none of your questions will be ticked.

    • Jay Jay – The achievements of the people you have mentioned are well known to warrant the honorarium – just like Dr. Kaunda. Also, you do not hear “Dr. Diddy, Dr. Winfrey, or Dr. Ferguson” everywhere. You seem to be sympathetic – did you also organize one for yourself?

    • @abilima – The problem here is not the degrees but the institutions awarding them…this falls under this Luo’s ministry; how did such institutions even be allowed to award degrees to students in the first place and call themselves universities.

  11. Most of the quacks masquerading as Drs. are embarrassing our country and should be exposed.
Ask the additional questions such as: Which was your university ? Can you mention one highly renown professor from the university where you obtained your doctorate?

  12. Most of the quacks masquerading as Drs. are embarrassing our country will be exposed and will not respond to the questions I have raised. God bless our beautiful country!

  13. When is it happening for Dr HH…in recognition for breaking the record of election losses and for being Zambia’s most bitter man.

  14. Outbreak of honorary degrees in Zambia is an insult to those of us who have taken many years understanding things through the eyes of the book. It is even more insulting to call Bowman Lusambo as Dr. What has he done apart from thugery behaviour? Even those who honour them, what criteria do they use? Hostory tells how Lusambo manhandled Major Kachingwe, is that a behaviour that those institution honouring them deem fit to confer on them such signified titles?

  15. Go the USA German UK if your so call Degree of PHD will help to a job, You will just come back with nothing. It is Africa you talk about such things.

  16. Go to the US, German, UK and see if your so call Degree of PHD will help to you a job, You will just come back with nothing. It is Africa you talk about such things.

  17. The good news we know the difference now.
We know who has worked for it and those who have just been given.

It is the same with Professorship, they are suppose to be chairs and titles in the Universities but in Zambia it is part of CV and a good title for entry into politics.

  18. Zambians just like BIG titles. It’s a mania and the Church is the worst culprit; Bishop, Apostle, Prophet. We even have Dr Apostles now. The Biblical Apostles were called simply by their names; Paul, Peter etc.

Strive to earn respect through integrity, wisdom and humility.

  19. But Luo herself has a fake one from Russia. And what’s wrong with her hands, they look swollen. One wonders in what places she has been inserting them or what they have been touching in order to catch that elephantiasis! Linyawe tuna lasona ona si inanyo seo mane kila kaloyawe, sikomilwe maswe ki mitenya ya macacani!

  20. It is a mockery to people who have earned their doctorate through rigorous sweating and studying. They have defended their thesis on a panel of highly educated personnel. These should be left to freedom fighters like KK and others who had no opportunities to advance their education because of the environment in which they grew in.People, like Bowman,Chishimba,GBM,are young to obtain genuine papers. These papers are obtained on political expedience because of an education clause in our constitution. It is one way of hiding under the canopy of that education clause. The environment is rife for people to get genuine papers. In our time,to have O’level Mathematics or Abbot was not easy.Nowadays books can just be accessed on computers.

  21. The Ministry of Higher Education should carry out a National, Regional, and Global Survey and list down, for public consumption, institutions or “Degree Mills” ,that offer fake or not accredited Academic Qualifications, including Honorary Degrees.

  22. What do you expect from a country that has institutionalised corruption? This is just lip service ,this ***** helped fake (Lungu) individual to become president.
