Government will soon launch a social protection programme aimed at removing street kids from the streets by empowering their parents and guardians.

The new social protection programme will target street kids in Lusaka and Copperbelt provinces where streetism is rife.

Community Development and Social Services Minister Emerine Kabanshi said the programme is designed to alleviate poverty in the families so that children do not go on the streets to beg.

Mrs. Kabanshi said the programme will be launched in Mufulira on the Copperbelt as a pilot project and later be rolled out to all parts of the country where streetism is endemic.

The Minister was speaking when she paid a courtesy call on Chieftainess Nkomesha Mukamambo II in Chongwe District after officiating a Decentralization workshop for her Ministry staff.

Government through the Ministry of Youth and Sport recently discovered that most of the street kids begging on the streets have families but have been forced on the roads due to poverty.

The traditional leader said government should work with traditional leaderships in the country to address challenges that affect people.

She said traditional leaders are a better link between the people and the government hence the need to utilize them to reach the people on various programmes.

  1. You have to be very ambitious to deal with these street families. Some have now grown big and strong. There are not only kids but even adults and the old. They invade fast food outlets in swarms, you can’t enjoy a meal. Some even fight over leftovers. People have lost dignity

  2. I don’t think empowering their guardians will make achieve the purpose, the best government build more orphanages where skills can be taught as well as these orphanages to self sustaining. Guardians will mismanage the resources and they be back on streets.

    • “…removing street kids from the streets by empowering their parents and guardians….”

That’s the most silly and du.ll thing I have ever heard……just train them with vocational skills them greet kids…..knowing these theives they want to throw money at parents who have survival problems them selves….

  3. What about the street youths and adults (over 18,s) There are millions of those on the streets and bus stations harassing travellers. Does the ministry have any plans for them, because when the street kids are too old to go back to their mamas for meals, they will be back on the streets again.

  4. What the hell on earth is she talking about when she is telling us that they are not street kids and have got families that it is they parent s who are sending them to.beg as they have seen this the best business around she must know all countries are run by laws this kids and all the women must be removed by force how do the government encourage such rubbish I think the president must remove such minister who talk rubbish and have no idea of what they talking about
