Government has bemoaned the increase in substance abuse by some Zambian students studying in China.

Zambian Ambassador to China Winnie Chibesakunda says it is a sad reality that the Mission in Beijing has in the recent past witnessed an increase in cases of student delinquency.

The Ambassador said this in a speech read on her behalf by Minister Counsellor at the Zambian Embassy in Beijing, Geoffrey Banda during the commemoration of the 54th Independence anniversary organized by the Association of Zambian Students in China (AZSIC) which was hosted at the Zambian Embassy in Beijing.

Mrs. Chibesakunda cited the growing trend in the use of narcotics such as marijuana among some students which has led to increased cases of expulsions, detentions and mental breakdowns in some instances.

She stated that the Zambian government remains grateful to the Chinese government for the magnanimous support in human capital development through scholarships and other forms of educational support.

Mrs Chibesakunda has since urged both new and returning students in China to focus on the main purpose of being in that country to avoid behaviors that risk the successful completion of their studies.

She has however expressed hope that Zambian students being trained in China will contribute positively, through the acquired skills and experiences in various academic disciplines, to solve many development challenges currently faced by Zambia.

About 3,000 Zambian students are currently studying in various disciplines in China.

This is contained in a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today by First Secretary for Education at the Zambian Embassy in Beijing, China, Nambula Wamulungwe.

    • Please don’t send your kids to China, India, Malaysia or any Asian or middle eastern countries for that matter. Their people are unabashedly racist and primitive and would never spit on a black being if he were on fire. I don’t blame the students because most of them are depressed while their parents in Zambia get bragging rights having their kids study abroad.
UK, USA and Scandinavia are your best options to send your kids to school because even though they have racists, they are not as primitive as Asians and Middle Easterners.

    • Studying abroad leads to culture shock, isolation, rejection by locals, suspicion from locals, missing home/family leading to depression & substance abuse.

I myself studied abroad & we even had 2 cases of suicide by students from Africa.
Best is our Embassy Education Attaches to do their jobs & engage these students so that they feel welcome.
