The conviction of Gregory Chifire a reminder on the need for all to respect the courts-Sunday Chanda

The Patriotic Front Media Director Sunday Chanda has said that the conviction of Mr Gregory Chifire on four counts of contempt of court for interfering with the judiciary should serve as a stark reminder on the need for all to respect the courts.

“The word “Contempt” in its ordinary every day usage denotes the feeling that a person or a thing is worthless or beneath consideration. In related legal parlance “Contempt” is the offence of being disobedient to or disrespectful of a court of law and its officers,” he said.

“Contempt of court is thus contempt of the judiciary which is ultimately contempt for the rule of Law. Respect for the Judicial authority vested in the courts is indispensable for the maintenance of the Rule of Law, and all regardless of political affiliation and socio-economic standing therefore have a duty to respect the independent decision-making authority of the Judiciary.”

“Sadly, there are certain individuals with political interests and agendas driven by arrogance, impetuosity, selfishness and greed that have made a sport of scandalising and belittling the courts. They will reap what they sow – it’s a natural and super natural ordinance,” he stressed.

“These individuals have deliberately set themselves on a collision course with the law by pursuing political agendas inimical to the Judiciary. They think that being arrogant and anti-establishment makes them “champions” of sorts,” Mr. Chanda observed.

“However, when the law catches up with them, they morph into wimps with a victim mentality as they whimper for attention. These misfits of law and order evidently appear to be allergic to tranquillity and all that is orderly. They are at the end of the day twisted campaigners of anarchy.”

“It is a given that as citizens from different walks of life pursuing varied interests, we will not always agree with the decisions of the courts. However, there are clear laid down procedures that provide for appropriate recourse in such circumstances. Whatever the case, being eccentric, and having a wilful disregard for the courts only breeds anarchy; we must all respect the courts of law.”

“Respect for the courts is respect for the rule of law. Respect for the rule of law is respect for our nation. Anything else is an anarchy and contempt for Zambians. As John Adams, one of the founding fathers of the United States of America once said : _“We are a nation of laws, not of men.”

“The rule of law, at its most basic, means that the law applies to everyone equally. It cannot be over emphasised that it means no one is above the law – because we are a country of laws and not of men. And, while the law may seem harsh, it is the law,” he said.

    • Respect is earned by doing the Right thing. Chifire’s conviction has made our conviction that the judicial system in Zambia has collapsed even stronger.

    • Nakachinda was nominated to Parliament this week. Kikikikikiki
Sunday Chanda still bucking like hyena. Lungu knows how to swindle.

    • Judges should respect themselves and the rule of law if they expect citizens to respect them. Sadly our judicial system has collapsed

    • CAN WE HAVE MEASURED ALTERCATION PEOPLE.
Y’all gotta be managed. The respect of our Institutions in the land can not be overemphasized. Citizens ought to understand that their freedoms in this land are relative to set standards and norms. You can’t afford to be seen to be undermining and defying these important institutions with impunity and expect no repercussions. If we do not have precedence yet, one in form of a deterrent has just been set and served. Chifire’s sentencing has been as a result of a court process. But like always he must be a family man. I hope the court considered his family’s fate and plight. Let’s not mock this man.

    • To respect is not the same as to fear. We feared the colonialists but did not respect them. That’s why We chased them. These courts want us to fear them

    • And you wonder why Lazy Lungu nominates MMD cadres to Parley….what can this moron do there? Look at Mumbi Phiri she just seats there…

    • this chanda keeps on talking even when he isn’t , the misfortune of chifire seems to make him HAPPY and his fellow pf gang but surely justice will prevail because good outweighs evil and their time is coming

    • They are happy to chat about such unecessary harsh kangaroo judgements but when it comes to talking about corruption and social cash trabsfer debacle they are silent simply state that they returned the money or FIC report tgey say matter is with the authorities.

    • @GAY JAY #1.6, Lazy bum illiterate tribal hooligan bully son of a tribal polygamist father who NEVER taught you toilet training pooping in public HAGAIN needing MUTINTA HICHILEMA and HAKAINDE HICHILEMA to change diapers HAGAIN? MUTINTA and HICHILEMA will NEVER go to STATE HOUSE.

    • Mr. SUNDAY CHANDA, you are very objective and a good leader who means well for ZAMBIA! Whatever you say is true and right. ONLY a tribalism party opposes you because what you say is the truth and is the feeling most SANE Zambians excpet who may need some CHAINAMA visits.

    • This guy Sunday Chanda is a disgrace. There is clear evidence that Chanda and his boss Lungu do not respect the Judiciary. A few months ago, a Zambian judge ordered that Tendai Biti be not returned to Zimbabwe. Lungu and his friends disregarded the judge’s order and sent Biti back to Zimbabwe anyway. That’s contempt of court. The ConCourt ordered Lungu’s ministers to pay back the money they illegally obtained by remaining in office after the dissolution of parliament back in 2016. The ministers have refused to pay back the money, and Lungu has said nothing about the issue. That’s clear contempt of court. And yet this guy sits here lecturing us on how we should respect the judiciary, when his boss and his minsters don’t do the same. Yes we should all respect our judiciary. But it…

    • … doesn’t mean we should give up our human rights, such as freedom of speech, in order to do so. The judiciary is not above criticism. And then he’s quoting John Adams to support his threats. Does he know that Americans don’t send people to prison for simply voicing their opinions?

  1. Well said Sunday Chanda. But how do u respect judges when Zambia selectively applies justice, decides who answers contempt and who doesn’t? So long as gap between poor and rich is mantained using justice system, life will always not favour the poor folks like Chifire

    • Why is Sunday Chanda not jailed yet for numerous Contempt, especially on HH’s cases?
Why is Sunday Chanda NOT arrested for calling Zambian Judges that they ONLY jail those who don’t respect them. This is pure CONTEMPT.
Judges approve that PF secretariat is their Public Relations office? This Sunday Chanda can’t be spokesperson for Mumba Malila and for High Court. ARREST Sunday.

  2. This matter has tarnished PF government’s image irretrievably at the world scene where they are blaming HE Lungu for Zambia’s dented image. This matter is very serious and if I was an advisor to the President, I would tell him to use his presidential powers to pardon Chifire without delay. Otherwise this matter willl haunt Zambia very badly

    • Lazy bum illiterate tribal hooligan bully son of an illiterate tribal polygamist father who never taught him toilet training pooping tribalism in public HAGAIN. Is the diaper dirty HAGAIN? Did MUTINTA Change you a few minutes ago? She must be tired of sweeping HH’s dung too.

    • Mr. President please don’t dance to HATRIBES insinuations. Next time the ANIMO FARM does the same HAGAIN let it rot in CHIMBOKAILA. NEVER let this unrepentant TRIBALISTS off the hook when they try to destroy the nation! @#3, you ha offside. Let him serve 6 years. I think there is another TRIBALIST on this blog that deserves to share the cell with CHIFIRE.

  3. Chanda your time is also coming. Trying to sound clever and intelligent when your friend is in trouble will not spare you from facing your own demons. Today, you are on the side of the law because of the powers that be. Tomorrow you will be crying foul when you are on the other side. Your own issue of contempt could note take off for whatever reasons, a precedent has been set, your big mouth and rantings will soon bring you before the same judges. Don’t celebrate just yet, you don’t know what lies in wait.

    • This chi Monday Chanda chizayonda in Prison, when it’s P.F, paymasters are kicked out of office.
Monday, do you remember Chanda Chimba iii ?
This time you will not be able to jump from P.F, to winning party as you’ve done in the past iwe ka Political Pr02t!tut3, as just like ka Tayali you are damaged goods, because of your dishonesty, belly cadre mentality, & stinking verbal diarrhoea.

    • HaCONGO DR, (HaSANDEMANDE) have you spoken to KABILA lately? Please let him allow Moise to come back and contest the elections. Here in Zambia, it is UNELECTABLE.

  4. Sunday, when the courts convict you for corruption once your party is out of office remember what you are preaching here, it is only fair when it is some one else.

  5. This Sunday chap will suffer after pf era.very short sighted and shallow minded. I hope he was given a plot in Swaziland as well!

  6. Sunday !! your “Monday” will surely come. You are too loud. You seem not to care about what is happening in our country today. To you everything is okay.

  7. No imwe ba upnd its not a matter of insulting Sunday Chanda but doing what is right so that we move forward as a nation. We should first respect the judiciary how do you make wild accusations against the Chief Justice and her Deputy. Gentlemen even if it is freedom of expression Mr Chifire took it too far. We as citizens should be responsible we have families to look after

  8. PF cadre Chanoda Ngwira should also be jailed for contempt..he disrespected Justice Malila and Wood after they appeared as witnesses in the Mutembo Nchito case and just because they sided with Mutembo he called for them to resign and even reported them to the police. He even failed to defend himself in court when he was cited for contempt. Let the same justice apply to him aswell

  9. So imwe ba UPND it’s all about coming into power to sort out PF not about uniting the nation ??.Thats why Zambians have rejected you “YOUR HATRED IS TOO LOUD!!!!@”

  10. @ Mambwe, i may not be a UPND support but just wish to correct you when you say Zambians have rejected UPND. That statement is not true in that the H.E ECL won by less than 10% or so. Besides that, H.E said they needed to team up with MMD to win, which they did. Remove MMD from the equation, what does that mean?

  11. @Mwelwa you are a UPND supporter and are the same chaps who claim to be unhappy PF members. First and foremost ba UPND got 60% of their votes from one province ( Southern) which means that they dont have the national character (REJECTS). And in Southern Province the turnout was close to 90% whilst the national average was 40%.

  12. Sunday Chanda remember that PF cadres including you and Lungu are commiting contept daily by commenting on Lungu’s eligubility for 2021, none of you have been cited. And Zambians are watching. Your day will surely come for this selective justice. Chifire take heart, God is on your side.

  13. But this is not a party issue, so where is Sunday Chanda coming from. The only comforting thing is that he is not talking about HH this time for a change

  14. I am surprised that by his standards, Sunday hasn’t mentioned Hakainde Hichilema in his speech. He is tailored to incriminate any happenings to HH and UPND. This is surely a first for him- where he has not attributed anything to HH. Unbelievable!

  15. Only in Zambia where the President,Judges and Speaker of the National Assembly are looked at as mini Gods. That will only last until 2021.
    After 2021,things will change drastically.
