Zambia finish 4th at COSAFA U20

Zambia failed to finish third at the 2018 COSAFA U20 Cup after losing 2-1 to Angola in the third and fourth playoff at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe on Thursday.

Emmanuel Mwiinde broke the deadlock after a scoreless first half in the 47th minute to put Zambia ahead.

But Angola equalized in the 79th minute through Melono and four minutes later man of the match Luvumbo sealed the win and the bronze medal.

Zambia’s consolation after another disappointing COSAFA U20 was going home with the fair play award.

Zambia were eliminated in the group stage last year to see them relinquish the title they won in December 2016 in South Africa.

Meanwhile, South Africa retained the COSAFA U20 title for a second successive year following a 4-3 post match penalty victory over Zimbabwe after a 1-1 draw.

It was South Africa’s seventh title to make them the second most successful country in the tournament after Zambia on 11 triumphs.

Zimbabwe are third on six titles.

  1. Zambia is a finished footballing nation. Let’s keep away from all football competitions for at least two years until we recover.

  2. Everything under this regime has gone haywire. Sharon needs serious prayers or else those five Ndola dudes will visit her.

  3. I said it and am saying it again. Countries like Mozambique, Angola, and Namibia have caught up with Zambia while South Africa and Zimbabwe have surpassed. FAZ needs to urgently take an urgent review of the status of Youth football in the country. Is it poor administration or is it lack of talent in the youths? If today we can not manage to beat Mozambique and Angola U20s, tomorrow when our U20 mature into the senior national team, will we be able to beat these same teams?
Countries in Southern Africa no longer prepare their teams 2 weeks before the tournament. You prepare them from the time the league commences in March. Call the players for short camps throughout the year and by October, the team is ready. FAZ must immediately organize serious youth leagues in the country at under 15…

  4. FAZ must immediately organize serious youth leagues in the country at under 15 and under 17 to have a continuous supply of players at under 20 teams.
