CARITAS in Solwezi District of Northwestern Province, has called on citizens to actively participate in national celebrations and reflect on the country’s journey of peace, unity and development as the country celebrates its 61st Independence anniversary this year.
In an interview with the media in Solwezi today, CARITAS Solwezi Social Programmes Director Noel Haaninga described Independence Day as a significant national milestone that should be embraced by every Zambian, regardless of background or political affiliation.
“This day is not just a public holiday. It is a day to remember how far we have come as a country and to celebrate the progress Zambia has made in the last 61 years,” he said.
Fr Haaninga commended the theme for this year’s celebrations: “61 Years of Peace and Unity; Building a Resilient and Prosperous Zambia” saying it aligns well with CARITAS’ mission and the foundational values that support national development.
“According to us as CARITAS, this theme speaks to four key pillars: peace, unity, resilience and prosperity. Peace and unity are essential for any development to take root. Without them, we cannot build a resilient or prosperous nation,” he said.
Fr Haaninga also applauded past and present governments for their efforts in maintaining peace and national unity since independence in 1964.
He particularly praised President Hakainde Hichilema for his continued commitment to the “One Zambia, One Nation” motto, which he said remains relevant in uniting the diverse population.
“CARITAS Solwezi is committed to promoting peace and unity by upholding human rights and fostering inclusive development in all our programmes across North-Western Province,” he said.
He stressed the importance of embracing diversity and ensuring that no one, especially the vulnerable, is left behind in the country’s developmental agenda.
The Director also made a passionate appeal to the Church and other faith-based organisations to remain firm and united in speaking the truth, especially on issues of national interest.
“A church that is not principled is a danger to the nation because it can be swayed in any direction. The Church must be the conscience of the people, speaking with a united, prophetic voice. What is wrong must be condemned by all churches and what is right must be praised, without fear or favor,” he said.
Fr Haaninga further lamented the continued use of young people as tools of political violence, particularly during the election period.
He said it was unfortunate that politicians often exploit the energy and vulnerability of youths for their selfish gain.
“Young people make up the majority of our population and must be protected, guided and engaged in meaningful economic and peace-building initiatives. Politicians should stop using youths for violence and instead empower them to be agents of change and development, just like our forefathers who fought for our freedom,” he said.
As the Nation draws closer to Independence Day, CARITAS Solwezi is urging all Zambians to take part in the commemorative events, not only as a show of patriotism, but also as an opportunity to recommit to the values that have held the country together for over 60 decades.
