Government with support from the European Union (EU), is set to implement the Nexus Energy and Water Programme for Zambia (NEWZA), which will provide alternative solar power for water treatment plants.
The project, which will be funded by the European Union, will commence next year.
Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation Permanent Secretary Romas Kamanga says the project will be implemented in selected water utility companies across the country.
Mr Kamanga explained that the NEWZA project aims to transition water intake, treatment plants and distribution centers from reliance on ZESCO power to solar energy.
He disclosed that the project aims to reduce electricity costs and improve water supply in communities.
Mr Kamanga said the project will reduce disruptions in water supply caused by load shedding.
He further assured the public that the government remains committed to ending load shedding and ensuring a stable 24-hour power supply.
The Permanent Secretary said this after touring Chambeshi Water Supply and Sanitation Company water projects in Kasama District.
Mr Kamanga also commended the utility company for its improved performance, noting that the company’s operations have significantly reduced water shortages that previously affected many households.
And Chambeshi Water Supply and Sanitation Company Managing Director Jose Chamanika said his company will benefit 6.3 million euros to implement the project.
Mr Chamanika said all the 26 water projects in both Northern and Muchinga Provinces will benefit from the initiative.
He stated that the project will enhance water supply systems and improve access to safe drinking water in various communities in the operation areas.
Mr Chamanika, however, noted that the company continues to face challenges such as load shedding and vandalism, which have negatively affected water supply in some parts of Kasama.
He said the ongoing power outages have reduced water production, while acts of vandalism at water facilities have disrupted service delivery.
Mr Chamanika added that the company is working closely with the Zambia Police Service to sensitise communities about the dangers and consequences of vandalism.
