World Vision Zambia has launched a programme dubbed the ‘Enough Food Campaign’ aimed at ending hunger and malnutrition.
World Vision Zambia Lunga – Mudanyama Cluster Manager, Allan Magasu, says the project is set to enhance the welfare of over one million children nationwide by the year 2026 through promotion of sustainable food production.
The media reports that speaking when launching the project during World Food Day commemoration held in Mwinilunga District of North-Western Province, Mr Magasu said the programme will help alleviate hunger and malnutrition among vulnerable households.
“We can only end hunger by empowering people with innovations that will enable them to provide food for their families,” Mr Magasu observed.
He urged that in order to make Enough Food Campaign a success, children who are mostly affected by hunger will be actively engaged by educating them both in schools and at community level on the benefits of growing and consuming local foods.
“If we are to end hunger, we need to start teaching children at an early age how to attain food security through agriculture initiatives,” noted Mr Magasu.
He has assured government of the organisation’s continued support in addressing challenges that affect children and the community at large.
Provincial Minister, Robert Lihefu, who was represented by Provincial Internal Auditor, Mary Mukuka, said the project could not have come at a better time than now when the government is implementing the home grown school feeding programme.
Mr Lihefu revealed that the feeding programme has had a positive impact on learners, adding that before the introduction of the project some learners absconded school due to hunger.
“We are happy to state that the school feeding programme has improved learner performance through provision of nutritious meals,” he stated.
He further noted that the launch of the Enough Food campaign aligns with government’s vision to end hunger by 2030 and strengthen food security through sustainable agriculture.
Meanwhile, Senior Chief Sailung’a has hailed World Vision for supporting vulnerable households in the district.
The traditional leader said the launch of the Enough Food Campaign is cardinal to ending hunger and malnutrition.
He emphasised the need for parents to take interest in the project, adding that their role in ending hunger and malnutrition is cardinal.
