Elephant kills fisherman in Chama

A 51-year-old man of Kawalawala village in chief Chifunda’s area in Chama district has been killed by an elephant.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba, identified the deceased as Obies Ng’uni, who was a fisherman.

Mr Mweemba said around 16:00 hours on the fateful day, Mr Ng’uni and his four friends left home for Luangwa River to fish.

He told the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Chama district that the incident occurred on May 5, 2026, around 20:00 hours at Chaumbwa village in chief Chifunda’s area.

“While fishing around 20:00 hours, an elephant charged at them. The four others managed to escape, but Mr Ng’uni met his fate after he was attacked and killed by the elephant,” he said.

Mr Mweemba said the body of the deceased has since been retrieved by family members in readiness for burial.

He said relatives have been advised to mark the grave to allow for possible exhumation for a postmortem examination in future in case need arises.
