A businessman in Chipata has been robbed of MK17 million, equivalent to K74,800, by unknown assailants armed with machetes.
The victim, Gabriel Zulu of the Mwami Border trading area, who is involved in currency exchange between the Zambian Kwacha and the Malawian Kwacha, was attacked at around 02:25 hours yesterday.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident and said the robbery was carried out by three men armed with machetes.
Mr Mweemba said the suspects gained entry to and exited from the house through the kitchen door.
According to police, Mr Zulu had received the money from his Malawian business partner prior to the incident.
Mr Mweemba explained that the victim was awakened by the suspects, whom he reportedly claims he can identify if seen again.
The businessman was allegedly threatened with machetes and forced to surrender the money.
Police said the suspects searched bags in the bedroom before fleeing with the cash.
Mr Mweemba added that no arrests have been made and no property has been recovered so far.
Investigations into the matter have been instituted.
