Namushakende – Nalikwanda Road project progresses

Road Development Agency, Rural Road Maintenance Director, Paul Habasimbi, has noted significant progress in the construction of the 55-kilometre Namushakendi – Nalikwanda Road in Mongu District of Western Province.

Speaking shortly after inspecting the ongoing road works, Mr Habasimbi, expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of the project, stating that the initiative forms part of the government’s broader agenda to improve rural road infrastructure and facilitate access to key economic centres.

Mr Habasimbi said the government remains committed to opening up rural areas through improved transport networks that will stimulate economic activities, ease the movement of people and goods, and improve access to essential public services.

He disclosed that out of the targeted 55 kilometres, approximately 45 kilometres of the road have already been upgraded from an earth road to an all-weather gravel standard, making it passable throughout the year.

“The project is progressing well and once completed, it will significantly reduce transportation challenges faced by communities in Nalikwanda Constituency and surrounding areas,” Mr Habasimbi said.

He further appealed to local residents to safeguard the infrastructure and refrain from vandalising road installations, stressing that the project is meant to benefit both present and future generations.

Mr Habasimbi revealed that the K75 Million allocated towards the project will not only cover road construction works, but will also facilitate the construction of markets and the sinking of boreholes in Nalikwanda Constituency, thereby improving livelihoods and access to clean water for local communities.

Western Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Richard Mulwanda, commended the Road Development Agency (RDA) for prioritising rural road infrastructure development in the province.

Mr Mulwanda noted that road infrastructure remains a critical pillar of national development as it promotes trade, investment, agricultural productivity, and access to social services.

He observed that many rural communities have for years struggled with poor road networks, making it difficult to transport farm produce, access healthcare facilities, and connect to markets.

The Provincial Deputy Permanent Secretary said the improved road network will help bridge the development gap between urban and rural areas by facilitating easier movement and enhancing service delivery in sectors such as health, education, and agriculture.

And speaking on behalf of other motorists and residents, Munukayumbwa Mulako, welcomed the project, describing it as a long-awaited intervention that will transform the area’s transportation system.

Mr Mulako said before the commencement of the construction works, motorists frequently encountered difficulties transporting goods, agricultural inputs, and patients to Lewanika General Hospital, especially during the rainy season when sections of the road became impassable.

He has expressed gratitude to the government for responding to the needs of the people and investing in infrastructure that is expected to boost economic activities, improve access to health services, and create opportunities for local communities.

The Namushakendi – Nalikwanda Road project is among several rural road infrastructure initiatives being implemented by the government across Western Province to enhance connectivity and contribute to sustainable rural development.
