A 35-year-old woman of Mushipi Village in Senior Chief Mwewa’s Chiefdom is nursing a fracture and other serious injuries after she was allegedly assaulted by her husband with a pounding stick.
Chifunabuli District Commissioner Stanley Mukosa identified the victim as Patricia Bwali and the suspect as being her husband, Bernard Kabanshi, aged 45.
Mr Mukosa said medical examinations later revealed that Ms Bwali suffered a fractured femur bone, a swollen left thigh, and bruised hips.
“According to brief facts of the case, the couple’s dispute began earlier that day around 15:00 hours, when Mr Kabanshi gave his wife K350 for domestic use. Ms Bwali reportedly handed the cash to a neighbour for safekeeping and went to drink a local brew known as “Lutuku”, returning home around 18:00 hours,” he said.
He said when her husband arrived home intoxicated about an hour later, he demanded the money back and upon her refusal, the he allegedly accused the victim of spending it on beer and attacked her with a pounding stick.
The Chifunabuli District Commissioner said it was then that a neighbour who heard Ms Bwali screaming for help rushed to her rescue and took her to a health facility, while the police were alerted.
Mr Mukosa said following a manhunt, Mr Kabanshi was apprehended and has since been formally charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm and transferred to Samfya, where he awaits court appearance.
