Govt applauds World Vision, private sector contribution to education sector

Government has commended the private sector for complementing its efforts to improve education standards through investments in school infrastructure and digital learning facilities.

Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary Kelvin Mambwe says partnerships between government and the private sector are critical in addressing challenges facing the education sector and creating a conducive learning environment for learners particularly in rural communities.

Dr. Mambwe said this through Director of Primary Education Felix Ngoma, in Kafue District during the handover of two 1×3 classroom blocks, two teachers’ houses, a modern ablution block, 25 computers and a one-year internet package valued at about K4 million to Mpande Hill Primary School.

The infrastructure was constructed by World Vision Zambia with support from CFAO Zambia, while Paratus Zambia provided computers and internet connectivity to the school.

The Permanent secretary said government remains committed to ensuring that more children access education through the provision of adequate learning infrastructure and enhanced internet connectivity in schools.

He noted that Zambia has recorded significant progress in expanding access to education following the introduction of the free education policy.

Dr Mambwe said over 2.5 million learners have returned to school since the policy was introduced, resulting in increased demand for classroom space and teaching personnel.

He observed that despite the gains made, many schools continue to face classroom shortages, overcrowding and high pupil-teacher ratios.

“The support being provided by cooperating partners is helping government address some of its challenges and create better learning conditions for learners,” he added.

Dr. Mambwe further noted that the provision of a modern ablution block will contribute to improved sanitation and learner retention, especially among girls.

Meanwhile, World Vision Zambia National Director Marc Nosbach said the provision of quality education among pupils, especially girls would help reduce early marriages.

Mr Nosbach revealed a long-standing partnership working with World Vision for the past 14 years and has supported interventions in education, child protection, water and sanitation, and community development.

And Kafue District Education Board Secretary Levy Matongo, through Mpande Primary School Head Teacher Sinya Ngoma, expressed gratitude that the investment will significantly improve teaching and learning outcomes among the pupils at the school.

Speaking at the same event, Senior Chieftaines Nkomeshya’s representative, Davies Chibwelenge said the completion of the project has fulfilled the community’s long-held dream of improving access to quality education.

The traditional leader urged community members to support government’s free education policy and safeguard the newly constructed facilities.

Paratus Country Manager Neill Nortje announced the provision of a 12-month Starlink internet package to the school to enhance access to digital learning.

Meanwhile, the learners expressed glowing tribute that Mpande Hill Primary School is changing and are not motivated to even work hard and perform in their academics.
