JTI response to racist allegations

Allegations against Mike Roach, General Manager, JTI Leaf Zambia

In reaction to the article published on October 9, 2015, with allegations against Mike Roach, JTI wishes to state the following facts:

  • Mike Roach is a well-respected manager with an excellent track-record who has been in the company for 8 years. He has been instrumental in growing the business in both Zambia and Malawi.
  • JTI has a Code of Conduct which defines the high ethical standards of behavior expected from all our employees.
  • JTI has in place a confidential system for employees to report any concerns that are potentially in violation of our Code of Conduct, Company Policies & Procedures and or local law.
  • We have not received any formal complaints regarding Mike Roach. Any complaints reported in good faith, are taken seriously and are fully investigated.

As a respected media outlet, we urge you to make a correction, in the interest of fair treatment of all.JTI is available to discuss and answer any questions you might have regarding the allegations published on your website.

  1. Like they would say he is racist! Either way it too you a long time to respond, in today’s fast moving business trends a 12 hour respond time is the expectation! This is a marked man..

  2. Ummm – just looked at the article written by the aggrieved employee. It does not clearly show what racial overtones if any were in the GM’s utterance. Using the F-word does not constitute a racist disposition nor is it enough to go on considering not much was elaborated after that. As Matakala points out it appears the employee rushed to LT at the expense of observing his organisation’s grievance process. That is already a lost opportunity trying to gather opinion and sympathy from bloggers instead of addressing the Labor Office or the Grievance process of the organization. Enough said.

  3. When you report a matter that is on-going tell the readership the original issue briefly for those who missed it. That is what news media do.
