FORMER Zambia Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU) President Leonard Hikaumba has said that he will remain as a trade unionist and he will not join politics.
Mr Hikaumba said in an interview that he wanted to contribute to the growth of the labour movement in the country and hence he would not join politics.
“When a person has served in the union at my level of being president, people expect that when he leaves office he will straight away join politics, this is not the case with me as I still want to serve the people in the civil service,” he said.
Mr Hikaumba said that there was a lot that is needed to be done in the labour movement such as uniting the movement.
He said the fragmentation that exists in the movement was not good for the sector.
Mr Hikaumba said during his time in office he had tried to advise some sector unions to come to together foe their cause.
“We tried to ensure that unions begin to speak to each other but we hope that this can continue to work together. We have also talked about emerging though sometimes the leaders of the some unions feel that they might be displaced if there is merger,” he said.
He said the employers were taking advantage of the fragmentation which existed in the sectors.
“It is sad that some unions in particular sectors fail to even to talk to each other this gives chance to employers to take advantage of them. In the long run it is the workers that suffer,” he said.
He bemoaned the fragmentation of the unions in the country as it was giving loopholes for employers to enhance their agendas to unethical conduct.

His message is clear that he can’t join politics. However if he were to join we know which party he would join. If he doesn’t we also know which party he votes for. Simple.
He will accept ministerial appointment under UPND next year.
Which clear message has hikaumba given the chap is 100% proper upnd it was seen clearly during 2015 presidential by election campaign only a fool can accept that blinder. The man is amongst the top blackmaillers and corrupt in the group of the likes of mmimbe,kamimbya, go on listing*
We all know which party Hikaumba will vote for even if he cannot join politics.so we none bantustan people also must team up and vote for PF in large numbers come 2016!!!
