Cost reflective tarrifs needed to the proposed Zesco tarrif increase – Sakwi

The United Liberal Party (ULP) president Sakwiba Sikota says there is need to consider cost reflective tariffs to the proposed 66 percent ZESCO tariff increase..

Speaking in Lusaka yesterday Mr. Sikota said there was need to deploy a way in which the hiking of tariffs would not have a great toll on the local economy.

He said failure to implementing cost reflective tariffs would scare off investors adding that this would lead to investors being skeptical in recovering their investment in the country.

Mr. Sikota said it was important for the proposed tariff hike would bring cost reflective tariffs for a number of years to guarantee investors that it would be done at a cost effective level.

He said this would cushion and protect the investors as it would suit them and work in their favour

And Mr. Sikota says the 66 percent proposed hike was too marginal saying ordinary citizens would not be prepared to deal handle it was implemented.

He said the Zambian people would be in a position to cope with it if they were given enough time before it was introduced.

Recently ZESCO proposed a Electricity hike of 66 percent but this has brought mixed opinions from sections of society.

  1. Impressive stuff Mr ULP self-appointed leader on “Mr. Sikota said it was important for the proposed tariff hike would bring cost reflective tariffs for a number of years to guarantee investors that it would be done at a cost effective level. He said this would cushion and protect the investors as it would suit them and work in their favour.” However, let us not just look at the 66% ZESCO proposed electricity tariff increase in the case of a light name investors, but in general as both LOCAL and FOREIGN investors with the general public at stake.

gRADUAL INCREMENTS BY ZESCO WOULD SURELY MAKE SENSE THAN THE CURRENT ONE-TIME INCREASE PROPOSAL.

  2. Bo Saki we have had investors before your point is useless just like yourself. Can you show us anything to point at with this investors you are talking about ? Forget about hiking Zesco Tariffs.

  3. Looking at the comments above you get the feeling people know sweet FA about what is meant by cost reflective tarrifs. There is absolutely no reason to disparage the person of Sakwiba. Seems there is a two digit IQ level of discourse in Zambia.

  4. #2 this is crunch time. The reason why the increment is so steep is because as a country we waited until the last minute, as usual. You will remember that for many years since the 1990s zambians vehemently opposed any tariff increment by zesco. Well now we have reached the end of the road if last year’s power deficts are anything to go by. I personally feel that I do not want the inconvenience of load shedding. If this tariff hike is the only thing left to assure me of continued supply of power, so be it . I have no time for politics: money must be found to assure all of us of adequate power supply.
