EU Supports Zambia Quick Wins in Energy Efficiency

EU-ZAMBIA

Zambia in the recent past has been experiencing a power deficit due to constrained power generation as a result of low water levels in the country’s main reservoirs.

This situation has affected the capacity of the Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) in satisfying the power demands from various sectors of the economy. In a quest to address the prevailing power deficit, the government has embarked on a number of measures including Energy Management which has been identified as a quick solution.

Therefore, in a decisive move to address energy management requirements in the country, the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ) with support from the European Union is implementing the Energy Efficiency Quick Win Actions and Specific Electricity Indicators Programme. This programme is being launched in Zambia by the European Union, under the framework of Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) – Technical Assistance Facility initiative.

The overall objective of the programme is to formulate Energy Efficiency Quick Win Actions, aiming to immediately reduce the electricity consumption of selected beneficiaries in Zambia and to facilitate an enabling environment on energy efficiency investments in both public and private sectors.

Four (04) priority areas have been earmarked for implementation of the programme and these include: Energy Intensive Industry, Municipal/Public Lighting, Public, Tertiary Sector and Residential Buildings and Solar Thermal Systems for hot water production.

Within the above sectors, 14 pilot cases for prefeasibility studies will be developed which will guide national level recommendations in the 4 selected priority areas.

Further, the programme will assist the Department of Energy in developing an electricity energy efficiency indicators monitoring and evaluation system.

The public and private organizations selected to undergo the pre-feasibility studies will be assessed based on set international standard criteria which is expected to spur foreign investments and attract financing in the field of energy efficiency.

The programme will be implemented from 5th September 2016 to 31st March 2017 and a team of both local and foreign consultants has been engaged to implement the programme.

  1. Very brilliant ideas to address the current energy challenges our country is going through. Energy CONSERVATION is essential to efficient energy management because energy conserved is energy generated (Quick Win Action). We must first start by using efficiently the available energy both at commercial and domestic levels.
