THE Patriotic Front (PF) and United Party for National Development (UPND) have agreed to work together in a move meant to provide more effective checks and balances to the MMD Government.
But MMD deputy national secretary, Jeff Kaande, said the MMD was not scared of the PF and UPND working together because it had become stronger.
In a joint statement issued by PF president Michael Sata and his UPND counterpart Hakainde Hichilema in Lusaka yesterday, the two leaders said the parties would work together at all levels on all matters of national importance.
The two opposition political parties are also demanding early presidential and parliamentary elections.
Mr Sata and Mr Hichilema said the two parties held a meeting in the morning yesterday where the landmark agreement was made.
“We have therefore started a long and difficult march in the same direction, not as one organisation but as two giants in Zambian politics,” they said.
The opposition leaders said the two political parties were the only representatives of the majority of the Zambian people.
Mr Sata and Mr Hichilema alleged that the MMD had in the past taken advantage of the differences within the opposition ‘‘o entrench bad governance and massive inefficiency’’.
The two leaders said the suffering of the Zambians would not end under the current Government.
They said the parties were responding to the loud and growing appeal from the party members and the general public.
They said they would lay groundwork for an effective, accountable, efficient and pro-poor government to replace the MMD.
However, Mr Kaande said that the PF and UPND could even merge with other political parties but the MMD would still beat them in the 2011 elections.
He said calls for early elections were ‘‘wishful thinking’’ because the country would only hold presidential and general elections in 2011.
“That is just politicking. They are just entertaining and pleasing themselves because they have no power to call for early elections,” Mr Kaande said.
He wondered what power the two political parties had for them to call for early elections when they were due in 2011.

I advise Mr. Sata to start preparing his retirement home in Luapula where he is going to have a farm. Mr. Sata, the MMD will win with a 2/3rd majority vote where Mr. Banda will win with a landslide victory in 2011. After he wins the elections, my advise to you is to start operations at your farm/retirement home in Luapula.
As for the pact, it is simple that HH is being used. But he is free to merge with whoever he wants to merge with because we are now in a democracy.
It will never work becoz Bembas (SATA) always want to be the ones on top (President). They used Easterners for second best until Easterners realized that this Chimbuya was one-sided. Now after calling Tongas Tribalists, in their desperation, they wish to blind fold them. We will see. It failed before, it will fail again. If SATA can stand down and take up Vice President, may be. But Bembas in the north will not accept that. Ask Easterners: Miyanda, Gen Tembo (MHSRIP), where all houndwinked by Bembas. Recently, the Lozi, after being thrown out from UPND joined SATA. We all know how that marriage ended. Interesting.

The Political Will for Radical Change
There is a political storm looming in Zambia and we thought we should respond and offer an opinion. The Citizens Democratic Party (CDP) is aware that UPND and PF merging. While the prospects of such an event may be exciting to some, we must warn Zambians of the danger of falling into the same political traps that have led to the lack of tangible economic development and wide spread corruption. It does not matter how hard a Leopard tries to get rid of its spots, it will always have them because that is its nature and DNA. The same applies to UPND and PF. They are both led by the same people who were part of MMD as well as other political parties and, therefore have the same failed ideologies.
I find the ranting from freemarlet – Economist a bit retarded. What makes u sure the MMD can get a 2/3 rd win when they have not done so since 1996. The truth of the matter is that Your leader has lost credebility from the day he took office. He has been in scandal after scandal. His middle name should be “scandal”. HH and Sata are a force you should not negate. You will have a rude shock come 2011. We need change and change is coming. Dont just rant for the sake of it.
Though we recognize that people and ideas evolve, these political parties have not demonstrated that in their policies and ideas for economic freedom. They have not offered concrete policies for job creation and better health care. They have not told the Zambian people how they will improve education and make sure that Zambia develops new, innovative and globally competitive industries. They have not given us the slightest idea as to how they will develop rural areas.
CDP is the only political party that has a Rural Development strategy. We are the only ones that have made job creation a priority and promised to create 2 million sustainable jobs in the first term of office. We are the only party that has made decentralization, job and wealth creation the cornerstones of our policies…

What I suggest is that they sort out who should be President now because the pact will break towards elections since both would want to be presidents. So its better it breaks now than just before elections.

Good news PF and UPND the devil is however in the details. if HH is president and sata is vice in the pact are you sure Northern and luapula votes will vote for such a pact? In the same vain will southern province vote for the pact in the event that Sata is at the helm? these are unpleasant questions that must be answered, as for the MMD the strategy is simple sata can not relinguish power to HH, its therefore the right time to take southern province from the jaws of the opposition. The merger is only good as far as ousting the MMD is concerned. On all other issues, the characters are completely different. One thing people must know is people will see through HH and Sata and their thirst for power. This will be the 4th election Sata will be participating in and this will be the 3rd election HH will be participating in (breech of the UPND constitution).

The LPM and RB administrations have by far been the most pro poor administrations in Zambia. How many more companies have been created under the LPM administration? How many youths have been empowered with measures like CEEC under the LPM and RB administration.
The RB administration is even taking steps to empower and lift the lives of the people in the rural areas by taking steps like Rural electrification, investing in infrastructure, FSP, mobile hospitals (which chiefs support BTW) and ordering the FRA to buy maize from the most remote rural areas and letting other businesses buy from accessible areas.
People are choosing to throw mud in their eyes. They want to blind themselves to the good policies of the MMD and would rather listen to the insults of Sata.
But people can see through the opposition. People want to hear plans, objectives and goals for the nation all of which the MMD has made clear and not insults from Sata and HH.

Stop wishing for things that a danger to the Zambian society and look at the big picture. What is at stake is real socio-econic development of Zambia and not looking to getting the Presidency of Zambia when is tired. If you are taking me as not being factual or realistic, just look at Kavindele or any other former MMD Vice President and see how their Presidency of Zambia ambition has been shuttered almost for ever unless God intervenes.

I said we in the South coz that is a fact and I do not see any tribalism in there at all. We here support people on merit. Which we do not see in Sata, so if HH becomes mediocre as a result of this pact, we shall look for a more credible candidate to support, full stop. Those who think these are tribal sentiments are the ones who need their heads examined.
