Veteran Politician Vernon Mwaanga has said the need for political dialogue among politicians is more necessary and more urgent now than ever before in Zambia.
Dr. Mwaanga noted that it is would be unwise for politicians to bury their heads in the sand and pretend that all is well in Zambia.
He stated that he fought for the independence of Zambia and for the re-introduction of multi-party politics in 1960 and 1990 because he looked forward to building a peaceful and prosperous country for all citizens in keeping with the country’s national motto of “one Zambia, one nation” which has served Zambians well since independence in 1964.
He explained that Zambia has passed through difficult times which imposed immense hardship on its citizens, such as the responsibility of hosting freedom fighters, the burden of Ian Smith’s unilateral declaration of independence and the political, social and economic pressure which was imposed on leaders and the people in Zambia.
Dr. Mwaanga noted that when the time came to deal with the need for Zambia to return to multi-party politics and do away with the oppressive one party system which had robbed Zambians of their basic freedoms and compromised their human rights as well as their rights to make political choices, President Kaunda did not look at how much power he enjoyed which was enormous at that time.
He further noted that President Kenneth Kaunda had to put the country and its people first by inviting the people who were in prison like Edward Shimwawa and General Christone Tembo to dialogue with them for the sake of peace in Zambia.
Dr. Mwaanga has, however, urged President Edgar Lungu to emulate Zambia’s first republican President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda who decided to put the country and the people first and opted to dialogue to maintain peace and harmony in Zambia.

Brother Mwaanga, the spirit of dialogue to foster harmonious politics in the land rests squarely on the shoulders of politicians who are still cheating themselves that there is no Government and President in Zambia. Lets zero on principles of conflict resolution seriously. Even preporandarant powers standing on different ideological platforms when they reach a crisis point, they recognize each other to achieve irredentist objectives. UPND is at its weakest point and its time to show maturity now.
How do people dialogue when they don’t recognize the opponents positions in society? wont they end up fighting? Vj is saying ECL should emulate blabla.. why can’t he ask HH to emulate Miyanda or anyone who lost to ECL to accept the loss? Biased advice will not work here. Dr. Mwaanga’s vast experience in diplomacy could have been fully applied to counsel HH on norms of democracy. We do acknowledge Dr. Mwaanga’s contribution in the fight for Zambia’s Independence from our former Colonial power (UK). We know his vibrancy when he was UNIP’s Regional Secretary based in Choma along with Martin Jangulo prior to 24th Oct 1964.
Change in political climate prompted Dr. Mwaanga to join a team that formed MMD. That is history. Dr. Mwaanga’s political experience makes should make him appreciate Mazoka’s wise leadership of UPND compared to HH’s arrogant style. Do you agree that the NGOs and other groupings which monitored the elections agreed that the elections were fair, though with room for improvement?
