Over fifty Zesco poles that were stationed at Chama Day Secondary school have been burnt by unknown people in Chama district.
And Ministry of Gender Permanent secretary Felix Phiri who is in the area on a tour to hand over tillers and Tractors has described the act as unfortunate.
Dr. Phiri says the development will slow down efforts by Government to improve the welfare of people.
Chama district Commissioner Leonard Ngoma has told ZNBC news at the scene of the incident that the fire was noticed around 12:00 hours.
Mr. Ngoma says it is strange that the poles got burnt within the premises of the school.
He explained that the poles were put at the school for connecting power in Makeni compound.
Mr. Ngoma says Zesco authorities in the area have reported the matter to police.
Meanwhile, Chama council secretary Judith Mambo has appealed to Government to consider allocating a fire tender to the district.
Mrs. Mambo says the council could not put off the fire due to lack of a fire tender

Please let cultivate a culture of investigating and not just saying arson on ecerytging giving a country bad name. Have you considered the possibility of school kids smoking on those poles?? Please investigate and give us proper feedback.
GRZ will tell you they are scouting for funds to buy a fire engine. Somehow, the ones they buy cost a million US dollars each.
We are in the dry season when most of the rural dwellers burn grass, to say suspected arson minus first carrying an investigation is uncalled for. Let the policemen carry any investigation before concluding that it was an act of arson, this is the period when we experience a lot of bush fires because the vegetation is dry and some local dwellers are busy preparing their land for the coming rain season.
Check if a proper fire break was set by ZESCO at the place were the poles were kept, the fire might have started from nearby bush and finds it way to the piled fuel (poles) at school.
Let us not jump to conclusion before establishing the cause of some of these fires, by so doing we are leaving the cause unknown and this would entail escalation of such fires.
It’s not always arson, it could be bush fire with fire break.

The poles were put at school and who was responsible for their safety? Did ZESCO think it safe to place them at the school premises and expect the school to provide security gratis? “Cultivating a culture of investigating” as @ Victorialfalls before laying it on arson is very logical of thinking minds, however, I fear what conclusions could be derived when the general thinking of the leadership is that fire requires professionalism as in all other sectors. Who are the Zambian experts in the science of fire, combustion or, investigations leading to fires? Just as there are no experts in transportation its accident after accident!
