Kawambwa locals defy fish ban

The department of fisheries in Kawambwa has expressed worry with the continued fishing activities by locals despite the fish ban being in force.

District Fisheries Officer, Ruth Kasonso told ZANIS that it is regrettable that people have continued to disregard the fish ban enforcement.

Mrs. Kasonso was speaking after a combined team of security officers and Fisheries department confiscated bundles of dried fish from Chimfwembe and Tea Estate markets yesterday.

Mrs. Kasonso has since warned fishermen, traders and transporters that the department will deal with anyone of them found involved in fishing or fish trade during the fish ban period.

She has appealed to fishermen to observe the annual fishing ban imposed by government from December 1st to February 28th to allow for the fish to breed.

  1. Please my fellow Luapula people lets us follow the law. You know fish has depleted in our lakes and rivers, consequently we are longer a rich province we used to be. Let us follow some of these good measures of restocking mbowa, ba pale, imintesa, utubombola, amatuku, imita, ….etc, We can survive on vegetables for a while please.

    • But Kawambwa fishery is not covered by the ban, so I was told some time back. Like it is not a major system with economic fishery resources. You must be talking about the Luena and Pambashe plains, Fitole, Luongo, Lufubu rivers, Ng’ona, Kalungwishi, Misangwa, etc where else since Mwansabomwe banachosako.

  2. Until everything is finished that when they will learn…lawlessness is the order of the day!!
