Chipata Shoprite Closed

The Local authority in Chipata district in Eastern Province has today closed the Shoprite branch in the area due to illegal construction works at the premises.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS today, Chipata District Council Public Relations Manager Kameko Manda said the local authority closed down the chain store around 09:00 hours for conducting illegal construction works at the premises.

Ms Manda said the construction works are a health hazard not only for the customers, but the employees aswel.

Ms Manda added that the council decided to take action, following numerous complaints from members of the public, adding that management at the chainstore did not even get permission from the council to conduct the works.

The council spokesperson revealed that the named chainstore is being renovated, without halting operations at the facility.

  1. I am sure the country’s headmaster or his office handlers will soon intervene. By the way, is it possible we could have some visuals of the said illegal renovations? Or not

    • Its funny how authorities rush to close large companies but fail to prosecute all the illegal structures mashrooming every day. You guest it bribes!
Individuals bribe better than large companies!

    • Chipata council has always been disorganised. They never figured the proper chain of corruption as have their Lusaka colleagues.

Whereas Chipata council staff usually look very sad an depressed, Lusaka city council staff are all smiles… always. Coz they are, you know… Organised!

  2. What permissions do they need to get from Chipata Council? Chipata Council is dull and knows nothing about Land Law

    • Have you ever heard of ” Planning Permission”. You need it to construct anything on your land.

  3. This is what happens when corruption goes beyond. There is no way Shoprite can start doing this without someone knowing from the council. And unfortunately if no one is going to pursue this case then forget about it because the shop is opening more no matter what. Do you expect when the involved is at it to investigation it.

  4. Both Manda Hill and Arcades shopping malls underwent over 50% structural developments without halting operations nor compensating tenants whose health, safety and business were affected due dust and noise. There was a fatal accident at Manda Hill and an employee died on the spot. All this went unpunished because Shoprite is well connected. Even in this case, the overzealous council employees who have enforced the bylaws will suffer the consequences when the bosses are paid

  5. Don’t worry it will be open by Monday. The same pipo who closed it need to buy some groceries from there.

  6. Close all of them Shoprite stores in the country.Zambia should grow its own supermarket industry like other African countries have done -Kenya has Nakumatt ,Botswana has Choppies and ZA has Shoprite.

    • But these are not govt shops. We need Zambians to start something. As a country we had ZCBC, NIEC, Mwaiseni etc. Whatever happened to them.

  7. Council also…It took members of the public to complain but what does there office do..
