The University of Zambia (UNZA) Management has create an additional 600 bed spaces in a bid to curb squatting. This is in addition to 3,800 bed spaces.
UNZA Dean of Student Affairs Lastone Zgambo says the bed spaces have been created under phase one of the newly introduced bunker beds in the Hostels.
Mr Zgambo says Once the project to introduce banker beds is complete the institution will have at least 7,000 bed spaces.
He explained that the project is due to the directive by the Minister of Higher Education Nkandu Luo that UNZA Management brings an end to squatting.
Mr Zgambo said this in an interview with ZNBC News in Lusaka.
The Dean of Student Affairs explained that the banker beds are being made by UNZA’s Technology Development and Advisory Unit (TDAU).
Mr Zgambo said once the project is complete, rooms that could initially hold only two students will be able to accommodate more students.
He said the learning institution currently has more than 14,000 students staying on campus despite inadequate accommodation.
Mr. Zgambo however said squatting is illegal and will be addressed.
That’s the way to go UNZA keep it up. Our intellectuals should be learning in a conducive atmosphere
Mr Zgambo, you want to curb squatting by by creating 7000 bed spaces when the institution has 14000 students studying on campus?? I can see a situation where the rooms will be packed with students like no mans business. Imagine each one keeping a squatter? If the current squarer is two, that will go to four. The solution is to build more hostels.
4 students in room which we used fir only 2 people when I was there and the toilets remain the same and this guy calls him self a Dr
Solution is to build more hostels Bunker beds not a solution.pa zed chabe umugulu wekaweka.long time solution not short term atase
