African Union Commissioner for Trade Albert Mudenda Muchanga says free trade across Africa’s borders will begin by June 2020.

He said following the ratification of the instrument by member states, the African Union was targeting June 2020 to begin the free trade.

He said the there were immense opportunities that the African Continental Free Trade Area(AfCFTA) brings.

He said African countries have an opportunity to industrialize and develop their manufacturing sector.

He said Africa should trade increasingly with itself and add value to its products.

He was speaking at the World Economic Forum (WRF)in Capetown, South Africa.

The debate was covered by CNN program, the Market Place.

Mr. Muchanga said the AfCFTA is now operational and the first free trade should begin in June 2020.

This is according to a statement issued by First Secretary for Press and Tourism at the Zambian Mission in Addis Ababa Mrs. Inutu Mupango Mwanza.

  1. Albert Mudenda Muchanga, where’s the infrastructure to support that African free trade? Dream on, Al.

    • I love the way people offer a critique, without even understanding what officials are talking about.

    • Free trade on the African continent will largely benefit economies with a strong manufacturing base such as south africa. Countries like Zambia will continue being overshadowed.what will you export copper to Malawi?
Your sugar maheu or whatever does even equate to some of the leading exporters on the continent.
It will kill our industries more than ever before. This is the same story as allowing free movement of people do it at your peril south Africa is a warning about immigration.
This is the same argument Britain once made about commonwealth is the wealth really common among the member states?
Its like a father trying to convince his son to consider him as a friend how does that work?

    • Nemwine do you mean that when Africans trade with countries outside Africa they have infrastructure , but when they trade among themselves then infrastructure disappear because they are trading with their own people.
Africa can only be developed by Africans and not by foreign nations it is laughable to think Europe will develop Africa I tell you that will never happen, Africa should learn to stand on its feet and face its own the challenges and solve their problems without out help.

  2. With vices such as xenophobia, how can you have free trade? First go and resolve the problems that make Africa divided before declaring free trade, you dreamer
