Zambian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, UK Anderson Chibwe has urged Zambian Nationals living in UK illegally to take advantage of the new British Immigration Amnesty and return back home before October 1, this year.
Ambassador Chibwe said the new British rules give migrants living illegally in UK an incentives to return to their respective countries on their own.
He said those that comply with the rule will be given a shorter ban than those that will wait for the UK border agency to remove them.
Mr Chibwa has since appealed to all Zambian in the UK to respect the British Laws to avoid coming into conflict with the law.
He has also urged all those that intend to travel to the UK to be conversant with the new immigrations rules.
This is contained in a statement issued to ZANIS today by the second Secretary for Press, in London, Rejoice Lukumba.
Ambassador Chibwe however noted that the new rules will not be applied to migrants who were in the UK as at March 17, 2008 and those that will return on their own to their respective countries before October 1, this year.
This follows the new immigration rules that the British government introduced to ban people who break the immigration Laws from returning to UK.
Mr. Chibwe noted that the new rules also provide that anyone who had previously used deception in an entry clearance application will have all future applications to travel to UK denied for 10years.
However the High Commissioner emphasized that migrants who breached UK immigration laws such as over staying, illegal entry and breaching the conditions of their leave by working illegally will be banned from returning to UK for one year and those that left voluntarily at their own expense, five years while those that were deported will be banned for 10years.
According to the letter from the Head of Unit UK Border Agency Mr. Mac Owen, the new immigration rules seek to provide a stronger sanction for breaches of the British Immigration Laws and reinforce the message that the people intending to travel to the UK obey the Laws or face the consequences.
He however stated that this follows last months warning statement that was issued by the British High Commissioner to Zambia Mr. Alistair Harrison that all Visa cheats who try to travel to UK by use of false documents will face an automatic ban.
Mr. Harrison stated that all applicants for the UK Visa will be required to provide finger scans as part of application process which will be used to identify the previously broken rules in the UK.

I have never understood why our people leave home to go and squat in these countries illegaly while scrapping for an existence of living hand to mouth with no prospect of making any savings and always ducking their own shadows in case they brush shoulders with law enforcement officers, whats the point!!? I’m a scholarship student in the UK. One of my professors preached to the class, that it’s so common for Africans to mistake politeness for been welcome. That’s why they stay on when time’s up to get back home, and lead a life unparalled to their qualifications, with no chance at all of realising their full potential and let alone a full life. They’re advanced in age but scramble for jobs suitable for teens.

I was a loafer in Zed for 6 years after the company that I worked for was privatised and retrenched over 5 hundred of its workforce. I followed my wife here who is a nursing sister and two months into UK I started work as a Customer Sales Advisor for British Gas, after they trained me for 1 month(with pay). What I have done for my family back home is what I failed to do in the 29 years that I worked in Zed. What would have become of me if I were still in Zed heaven knows. I think everyone has the right to live where they want to live and if they are illegal, let the authorities of the host countries deal with them. Staying home or going abroad is a personal decision and not a national one, so the issue of embarrassing zambia does not arise. Its common knowledge that RSA is the number one Zambian diasporee destination at the moment as it is easiest to access. There are no true figures for people living illegally but for illegals caught. I remember when My father used to make 40 million kwacha every 2 months. As you know zambian job security is none existent. He went from 40 million to selling chickens. Just to put numbers into perspective, it seems to me that K16 000 000.00 is a hell lot of money in Zambia, is it really? What is the significance of that number? Is it reflective of a high-class status quo? Some folks say R30 000 000 is the real wage in Zambia and others say 20 000 000. It keeps changing and confirms what we already know that in countries with less social and economic security, money alone is never enough. But just in case I am wrong; Just how many of those kwacha zeroes are significant in real Zambian terms assuming we want to lure a skilled, illegal Zambian resident back to ZambiK00000.

The Zambians who are working abroad are only trying to survive and take care of their families back home. I seriously doubt that they left because they hate Zambia. They are just trying to survive. Rather than throw stones, Zambians at home should work with those abroad to find ways to work together. Now, working together will not happen unless we develop a trusting relationship, and this involves being responsible with money. I don’t know how many times I have heard that a Zambian working abroad sent large sums of money home to start a business to benefit relatives, but the relatives squandered, and are asking for MORE money to start the business (as if money grows on trees).
I told my relatives, that don’t expect any money from me unless you are willing to work or doing some type of business that will help sustain you.

We here at home should stop thinking that Zambians abroad spend everyday thinking about Zambia. They don’t. They get on with their lives, planning for the long term to work and retire abroad. Older nations like India, China, UK and others have always accepted emigration as way of their people improving themselves.
