THE Copperbelt University (CBU) management is courting private construction companies to partner with them and enhance students’ accommodation under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) development progamme.
CBU public relations officer Grace Mikunga said the university was ready to partner with private construction companies to come up with business proposals that would benefit both parties.
“The university welcomes proposals for partnerships under PPP for the construction of students’ hostels to enhance accommodation at the Kitwe campus,” Ms Mikunga said.
And CBU management has spent K4 billion on the construction of two new students’ hostels at the campus.
Ms Mikunga said the construction of the school of business, office complex, lecture theatre, school of technology, the directorate of distance education and open learning had also been completed.
“CBU has so far completed construction of the new hostels at the campus at a cost of K4 billion and a separate project of the school of business, office complex, lecture theatre, school of technology and the directorate of distance education and open learning,” she said.
While the hostels’ project was funded by the Government and constructed by private companies, the university under its built-in environment programme used its own resources on other construction projects.
“The university through internally generated funds like fees and other sources managed to raise enough funds for the construction of the directorate of distance education and open learning,” said Ms Mikunga.
She said apart from the university construction team, other firms like Caisson of Kitwe, MSD and Lusaka’s Wah-Kong were engaged for the hostels project.
The construction project, which started in December 2008, has seen male hostels completed while the female hostels’ project, which started in 2009, was receiving finishing touches.

This is great news. It is good that infrastructure development is ongoing at CBU. The only challenge is to stop the students from destroying the infrastructure through unnecessary riots.
Professor Mutale Musonda and management I salute you.As a former CBU student,I have seen how Professor Musonda has gradually improved the infrastructure and raised the learning standards at the varsity. The man is a hard worker.When I arrived in year with Professor Lungu as V.C, the situation @ the institute was pathetic.We didn’t even have curtain for the rooms! After the new V.C came,every school received a bus including a big one donated by the late Levy! Quality teaching staff were brought in, infrastructure development and lots more! I am sure ba John Lungu is embarrassed!
But do something to eradecate the cocroaches in the old rooms. Once in a while call some company to eradicate them. I am sure you know that where there are cocroaches you also find bed bugs.
What am really worried about is the sad situation currently obtaining at the once ‘Great White Walls’ of CBU where a minimum of 6 male students are huddled up in one room. This creates a fertile breeding ground for communicable diseases of all sorts. The other aspect that may make some uncomfortable to discuss is the probable occurence of socially objectionable sexual orientations brought about due to sleeping arrangements.
I must commend the current crop of management team at The CBU for the many strides they have made to change the face of this institution. One just needs to visit the place to appreciate the work they have done.I notice this change in the work ethic of the employees,they were even smile now as they attend to you.
