UPND Youths demand for the immediate release of 30 Chongwe residents arrested for illegal trade in Charcoal

Share

UPND Lusaka Province youths has expressed concerns over the detention of over 30 Chongwe residents who were arrested last Thursday for merely trading in charcoal business. The police on said date, arrested the residents even when they had valid papers with them allowing them to trade in Charcoal.

The youth leadership said that the Chongwe case is a classic example of many trumped up arrests and charges that the Zambian people have been through under the Patriotic Front led police.

“Under this regime, many citizens have been subjected to these and many different kinds of trumped-up charges. How can one order an arrest of residents who are merely trying to survive under the harsh conditions that the same PF have brought since they took power? What is surprising is that these residents have valid papers allowing them to trade in Charcoal business. Why arrest them?” wondered the UPND youth leadership.

UPND Youths, who had hoped to see the residents walk to freedom yesterday afternoon when the matter was brought before Chongwe magistrate court were shocked when the magistrate refused to grant bail to the residents stating that the court could not do so as residents stay in different places. This was despite the residents availing before the court traceable references. The residents have since been taken to Kamwala remand prison.

Speaking shortly after the court proceedings, the UPND youths stated that their wish was to see both an independent judiciary and police service devoid of political infiltration and execute their duties in accordance with the republican constitution.

Isidore Tetamashimba, 2021 Mandevu constituency aspiring candidate who accompanied the youths provided food for all the remanded residents and took time to encourage them and their families to remain strong as this persecution was just a passing phase.

  1. Timothy Phiri, so you want them to rejoice over police arresting people who are trying to make a living while the politician they voted for keep getting richer. Tell your PF government to provide jobs instead of just spending money on roads, this government has been one dimensional infrastructure that’s it even some of that infrastructure is subpar and failing. We getting tired of your PF, always getting mad when advised. It is better to leave and let someone else take over if you can’t take the heat.

  2. Were the PF cadres who disrupted the chakwela makumbi traditional ceremony in Chongwe and stole food ever arrested? Why are arrests only being made on the opposition cadres. The Politicians have failed to create jobs in Zambia, so charcoal burning is a survival instinct, please release those UPND cadres and arrest our PF cadres who stormed a traditional ceremony. I am PF but an objective one not a cadre for the sake of caderism but with a deep sense of reasoning

  3. When KBF takes over the leadership of PF. law and order will be restored. All this indiscipline from carders especially PF cadres will be brought to an end. Trust me, if only the PF can suspend their intra party dictatorship and replace it with intra party democracy, KBF becomes leader of PF and the economy gets back on track immediately, the driver we currently have is off rails, he is not taking us anywhere

  4. UPND is just a bunch of frustrated bitter. It appears UPND will be tolerating illegality if they ever came to power. They are creating an atmosphere which will make it very difficult to govern. What does UPND manifesto say about charcoal that if UPND has a manifesto.

  5. Ati we demand for the immediate release of persons arrested. Reminds me of of the dog that barked at the moon. These people are like MTN: Everywhere you go and a flight risk. The seasonal adjustment in prices have everyone wanting in on the action. Without control there will be no trees left.

  8. If only we were mature in the way we do our politics, Zambia would have developed but our politics are of hatred, support were we see we can benefit, speak against everything whether good or bad as long as the one speaking does not belong to your camp. When it comes to choosing our representative we don’t choose on merit but based what is going to be your benefit. we cant justify our no vote or our yes vote no wonder we have same politicians but just they change colors today they are in yellow, tomorrow red, the other day green or blue and we think we are changing leaders. we don’t know even the meaning of change.

  9. Only God can forgive those criminals. They need to repent. In fact upnd is cursed with demons. They need to attend national prayer

  10. How can charges be trumped up when an illegal act has been perpetrated? From where I stand, I would say, let leniency be exercised as the law takes its course considering the mitigating circumstances for those arrested youth. Unless I am missing something; don’t use politics to circumvent unlawful acts.

  12. They broke the law, though in this case leniency and smarts need to be of essence. Release them with a fine. Simple, also keep politicians away from civil matters. PF and UPND are annoying. Education is what Zambians need.
