Vice president Rupiah Banda has urged Zambians to continue praying for the recovery of President Mwanawasa, who is currently hospitalised in Paris, France.
Mr Banda said this on arrival at the Ndola international airport this morning where he is scheduled to officially open the Ndola International Trade Fair this afternoon.
The vice president urged Zambians to be optimistic that God will heal the President and that they continue to pray for the safe return of the first family back home.
“I am urging all of you in families, churches, organisations and the nation at large to continue praying for the recovery of our president and for the first family to return home safely,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Vice President has disclosed that this year’s Zambia International Trade Fair is different from the previous ones as it will have a number of agreements signed between Zambia and other countries.
He disclosed that contracts worth K2 billion will be signed this afternoon at the Trade Fair and that all show goers will witness the signing so that they can appreciate the developmental projects government under the able leadership of President Mwanawasa had embarked on.
And in his welcome remarks, Copperbelt Provincial Minister Mwansa Mbulakulima said the province had been holding prayers for the speedy recovery of president Mwanawasa.
The Vice President is this afternoon expected to officially open the 2008 Zambia International Trade Fair.
Are there still any doubting Thomases out there thinking that the govt is hiding something? Even if they were the scum of the earth they couldnot have gone this far with the truth.
It is as well that Sata suffered a heart attack firt and LPM saved his life. Had it been the other way round there would have fire by now in Zed from him and his PF with exagerations. I’m sure there would have a massive rally in Lusaka demanding for a by-election.
Iwe disgusted spectator! How simplistic can you be?
the govt is witholding alot of vital information like not telling it as it is. We need to know for instance if the President is on life support machines and for how long? This information is so crucial for planning purposes and deciding who ascends to the throne. What is the prognosis of the President ‘s illness? Can he still function as Chief of State? Please don’t treat people of Zambia like small children they have had relatives who have been sick before.
#4 cant add more to that.LPM is no more, thats why we cant see him or hear anything from him.Everything is fishy,he is not even in a regular hospital but in a high security military hospital.
Heloooooo, could you please show us some footage of our head of State? Stop keeping us in suspense like young kids … you chaps may face seriuos trouble if something bad happens to him! Ifi fintu taba fisa kaaaa! Ulefwala na ma shed’s yapa chililo mu July!!! You must be hiding something behind those glasses!
Zambia is not at a level yet where they can disclose the illness in detail. We are even sure whether these guys are fit when they run for President. The public do not have records that they can access.
We wish him well though!
Bwana Entrepreneur (#7), when do you think Zambia will reach a level when it can disclose presidential medical incapacitation? 100 years? Your self contradictory crap should stay were it belongs – up yours!
For those making wishes, if wishes were horses…….
#8…even beggers would be riding. You are very right. Too much of hoping. Could someone stop concentrating on the stupid trade fair nonsense give us a full fledged update on his Medical status? Twanaka nama rumors!
Who is this woman next to RB. We should start to scrutinize RB since he is likely to oversee our national affairs while levy is incapacitated or gone at least for 3-4 solid months.
Bane, patience is a virtue! Let’us be patient if someone is cheating it won’t be for long. But if LPM had a stroke as they are reporting it will take long for him to recover. The biggest problem we have in Zambia is that parties are centered on one man. What is PF without Sata, UPND without HH, and MMD without LPM? I know there are a lot of capable Zambians out there but we don’t know them. We somehow have to reform our political parties and move away from this idol worshiping.
Landeni fye bwino Bakamba, twanaka naimwee bakelenka, ngamwapakama mulatulaba, update us on his Medical Status no one is immuned to this things.
this proves than the post have indeed been compromised by mmd and levy, they are not “digging for the truth”. this is the same paper that clandestinely sent reporters to france to shadow kalu and the national team while they were in a secret camp. now they are quiet and just being the government mouthpiece!
Lupiya Banda was born in Zimbabwe in 1937. We need to know. is he a Zambian born from Zambian parents who were working in Rhodesia then, or he is one of those who migrated to Zambia like our many others like Malawian-Zambians.
Guys we cant remain silent on these issues..We are talking of our country and we can have someone acting president who has roots in with Mugabe.. LPM even at one time sent him to mend relationship with BOB maybe on string basis that he is partly Zimbo.
Dnt worry VP wil kip on prayin 4our man…But 4as long as u tel us da truth!!!!!!
U only remember prayers in troubled times..We should have been talking about LPM’s replacement by now.
The Ministers are being extremely wise and cautious in the manner in which they are disclosing (that’s if they are) information. Zambia would be in a highly fluid and unstable condition without President Mwanawasa.
As you are well aware both the Ruling party and the opposition are yet to concretize their strategies, finances and worse off candidates for a presidential election. We are currently sitting a costly National Constitutional Commission, a process costing us millions of hard earned kwacha. There is a looming increase in fuel prices and food commodities and our inflation rate isn’t as favorable as we hoped it would be.
I gave up on the The One man Post Newspaper in 2001! Just after Chiluba chose Levy as his successor, and in 2006 after they published the election results well before we knew that Sata had lost, on the ground Sata was leading.
Exoecting the Post to dig deeper on Mwanawasa’s illness is not something they will do. But reading their Editorial comment “hope for the best, expect the worst” says it all.
They know what has happened to Mwanawasa and they are just toing the MMD and Government line, simply put; forget it, it won’t come from the Post! Mwanawasa won’t be the Presido again, if he survives this!
Cont’d….. Added to which there is a lot of political and economic instability in the region.
My most dear Country men and women, under these circumstances, the last thing you want is political instability. Any instability will have adverse effects on the economy and the entire social setup.
Instead of mounting unnecessary pressure on the cabinet, let’s rally behind them and pray that nothing unfortunate happens.
Ba LT photo editor please justify your reasons for using a picture depicting mourning…
Y do Christians only remember prayers in times of trouble..And we are supposed to be talking about L P M s replacement by now..Look at Cuba & Israel.
Why is Mulongoti saying pipo can’t travle to paris to see Levy? MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM fishy fishy!
PLM will not recover to lead Zambia again. He is brain dead.
We just hope the policies he laid are followed.
# 14 HK, R.banda is as zambian as most of us. stop being tribalistic and just hope the next presido does not behave like a monkey in a maize field.
why did mulongoti announce that no one should travel to France, after Sata wanted to go and visit LPM? SUMTHING IS FISHY
It took one week for Yasa Arafat’s death to be revealed from the same hospital and with the same procedure of not allowing visitors and only one doctor, it might just be the same with our president, just let us know, remember you can’t hide death, FOR HOW LONG
Yap #25 this hospital is notorius for keeping secrets.LPM is no more but God knows why they are hiding what pipo already know.
UBUTEKO, they want to take advantange of LPM being sick and steal the money before they announce if he is dead or unfit to continue his duties. Bukabwala tabwakapwe pa ZED, They will steal the money and blame LPM na beshiba bamabala ati nafishupa FRANCE. Let’s wait and see
Now, this Malone Zaza must be knowing something….. how does someone dream up something like that? If anyone wants to know truth, let them take Zaza to task……
Though the most likely situation is that Ba Levy balepema, but probably in a very critical condition…God help the republic
Palepema but ni machine ilepema!
The vice president must know that we will end up praying a miss if as a Nation we dont know what exactly the situation is.Twalapepa shani if the reports that are coming are not accurate? When am praying i should also see the results of my prayer, I wish yu a quick recover Mr president
#27 they know what the are hiding Mulongoti and co.its fishy.
If this be God’s will, God save the President; if it is not God’s will for Levy to live………??
Zambeef bika bola panshi, We all know that our president is in critical condition but we need to choose words at this point in term. No matter how you dislike him please put aside that hatred and wish him a quick recovery though you may have your own opinions over his illness. If Mr Mwanawasa is otherwise, some of his own ministers are planning which way they take and I can see MMD having total confusion and falling apart. The question is will MMD survive?
Come back and acomplish what you started , our economy is doing so well because of your policies that you have put in places.
#33 Pafwenamwine
i dont hate LPM infact many of my friends amd family have greatly benefitted from his policies but the fact is that he is no more and time will tell that all my blogs have been factual.
Wait and see by Tuesday all will be announced.Mulongoti and Pande are up to no good.
I hope these chaps are not strategizing to announce any sad news after the International trade fair show! …it’s never a good idea to keep postponing the evil day. Just swallow your pride and let the cat out of the bag if you have to!
Some proof of his being alive will help us a lot. How do you expect us to pray for the person whose status we don’t even know; for what exactly will be the baseline of our prayers?
it is difficult to pray when we are being fed with lies every day and night on President Mwanawasa’s condition. To dispel rumours, Mr Mulongoti should not be afraid of people travelling to see their President. Yes LPM is in a military hospital but with the permission of the wife, people can travel to wish him well.If the Post can manage to accurately report on the Zimbabwe situation, they can travel to France and bring us some pictures or solid news. The purpose of this news is to help us prepare for a possible by-election which must be free and fair. Obvoiusly LPM has managed to instill fear in civil servants.
Lets just continue praying if we are to be successful: for successful people base their hope even when there is not hope. May Levy p.m recover soon.
#14 HK whether lupia Banda is foreigner or no, will not bring any betterment.I guess you are a short sighted person.Who have developed america?is it the natives or people from abroad? My friend, improve on your xenophobia syndrome.Thats why Africa is under developed and will never develop because of alot of people thinking so lowly like you HK.
The Hôpital d’instruction des armées Percy or HIA Percy (meaning “Percy Training Hospital of the Armies”) is a military hospital in Clamart, near Paris, France. It is managed by the health services of the Armies and provides health services to both military and civilian patients.
It has, in particular, an emergency service, a service for treating severe burns, and a service for treating patients contaminated by radioactivity (including a hematological service).
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was treated at Percy hospital from October 29, 2004 to his death on November 11, 2004, after being transported there on in an emergency; during his stay at Percy, he fell into an increasingly dee
i wish you Mr president quick recover from the stroke ,because people from Zambia needs you more than ever , and you have not yet achive your goals which i am so sure they have been planted in your heart for longtime . there is a lot of confusion after people heard that news , but never mind , those who misunderstand you are just too young for them to think properly . it is true that after you have won the 2006 election , country’s economic it is been changed , people ‘s life have really changed , salary increments is great job that you have done ! without that employer are still paying employees less than what they supposed to earn , Zambians do not forget who brought you up again ,L.P.M!
I wonder for how long this information blackout will continue for. We need to know the truth and we demand to knw now!!!
Such uncertainty is not good especially for a poor country tht’s trying to woo foreign investors. On thursday, the Kwacha depreciated by about K250 as a result of the death rumour.
Matters can only get worse if we keep up with the information blackout.
The only people that need him are the chinese who milked us so much.
THIS IS ALSO WHAT I WANT TO SAY , BECAUSE OF MR PRESIDENT ‘S ILL ,KWACHA DEPRECIATED. ALSO COUNTRY ‘S ECONOMIC WILL GO DOWN , AND INFLATION RATE WILL PICK UP , WHAT IF WE HELD ANOTHER ELECTION , ZAMBIA WILL DIE , WILL BE THE SECOND ZIMBABWE AS TIME GOES BY .
#42 at last someone who understands the effects of this uncertainty. We need more people like Patriotic Zambian and less of Zeddy,X-mas and Pafwenamwine etc who think that a country can be ran on sentiment only.these chaps are not practical but some old miserable professional mouners.
Thank God your men aint in govt becoz u could have sank our fragile economy.
#s 41 & 44 Mr Chris are you from congo ?
no matter where i am from , i speak the truth , understand ?
by the way are u Zambian ?
Let’s move on for the sake of the nation LPM is no more (pafwa bantu, pashala bantu),were is the chief justice? man!!!,He should be in charge other than letting the country at stake.
shut up !49
Zambeef, personally I strongly disagree with your notion that I’m not practical.Kwacha can appreciate million times but the fact is there will be less major foreign currencies circulating and this can have negative impact on the economy. when euro is doing well against USA $ companies in euro zone complain that American goods will flood the Euro markets.Do you think those boys along Katondo street will be selling $ or £ to get kwacha? they ‘ll keep Dollas till the kwacha depreciates.Yes i agree with you on the issue of the uncertainity of President Mwanawasa and how this will have impact on the economy but what will determined this is having robust contigent plans by zambians. He has done is
Piss off no.50
Some punk on BBC news at 7.12pm (BST) was talking about the crisis in Zimbabwe. He mentioned Mwanawasa’s illness and smiled at the prospect of Mwanawasa being dead. It was quite annoying. He has an east African accent and unfortunately I didn’t catch his name. Any ideas who he is? Was he laughing at the rumours or at the possibility that Mwanawas was dead?
Ala bane bonse ngatamukwete ilyashi*news*keep quiet. UMo kuti aponokelapo! Respect ku buteko!
people who broadcast with CNN and BBC is always do such to annoying nationals , they are foolish! forget about such’ PUNK’
This is chilubas time to awaken and rise again. They have draged your name through the toliet. Now while they are in disarry, summon your pips are rule.
#51 Pafwenawine,
you do have a point ,as for our brothers on Katondo I dont think the are sophisticated enough.Anyways i do respect your views which are valid. My man i am just worried about my pipo’s back home because flactuations in our currency can have drastic effects on millions.
LPM has done wonders which many schlors including myself thought were impossible.
Lets pray for our beloved ZAMBIA
support upstairs!
#21 (Powerman), We don’t on pray in times of trouble. We pray even in times oof joy and prosperity. We even pray at meal time. This is a serious situation so why shouldn’t we pray now? Why are you offended at the idea of praying for LPM? With us its automatic that when there is trouble we pray even when its somebody else and not us who is in trouble.
Ladies and Gentlemen, fellow Zambians. This is a national crisis in formation, consequences of which we have not experienced before as a nation. The President suffered an annyurism leading to his brain hermorrghing.Once a nerve raptures in the brain we know for all intents and purposes that one has become permanently incapacited and this is what it is.Instead of giving false briefs and misleading the nation, Rupiah, Mulongoti etc must begin to put together a coalition transition team. Haiving input from old man KK would be extremely positive. Stop slandering each other by calling who is or is not zambian. We have too much at stake. Bless LPM’S family
Zambeef thanks and God bless you in whatsoever you are doing out there. If you are in UK we can meet and have some good time.
Guys
Let us be seriou about issues We have many Zambian doctors that have specialized in Neuro Surgery who can explain to the nation the extent of Mwanawasa’s illness. Be like the USA, who were open and discussed the Brain Cancer ot Ted Kennedy on live T.V.
If this information is made open, it will allow for people of Zambia to know the condition of our Head of State.
ok, Mr Veep Banda. Your request has been noted.
Pafwenamwine #61
I shall be in london, England in two weeks time. How do i get intourch with you?
we huv bin praying that we hear the truth ba VIP vp Banda.
continue , and non -stop praying for our president . LPM
An already fragile region has just gotten weaker by the incapacitation of LPM. Those who think that Mugabe just got stubborn today need to revisit history and review how he strong-armed Muzorewa, Ndaba Sithole, Nkomo and many others before emerging with his ZANU-PF.Only Kaunda understands how to deal with this man.Zambia being the last bastion of regional stability, now has the onerous task of filling a void gaping by LPM’s illness, he the most vocal critic of Mugabe.South Africa faces an uncertain transition, Kenya is tulmutus,Zaire ,Congo are in chaos and China is firmly behind Mugabe with possible arms shipment… watch out!
As a nation we have to stay focussed on our enabling and terminal goals, national development, peace, and stability. By virtue of the fact that no one has come forward with a statement of any form from the president, conclusively he is in a coma hence unable to make any national decisions. Again, as a nation, we cannot keep waiting for the unknown status of the president’s recovery. Policies are well spelt out on who should step in shoulld the president be incapacitated as the case is now. Our leadership is full of well educated people who should move the country in the right direction.
Bob Marley was right! when he sang they dont want to see us unity all what they want to do see us killing each. So if we Africans are stupid we shall continue fighting each other while other nations forge ahead with economical developments. We are blessed with natural ressources and abundant of nature. Why not get forcast and continue with sound policies which can revive our economies, which can bring about health in our homes. The situation can be fragile without the president. Ready that book by Wina “A night without a president” then you will know what means to have leadership vacuum. Whatever may I wish our head of state life and hope is the last thing we should lose
Levy hails US Fair presence
President Mwanawasa has commended American investors exhibiting at this year’s Zambia International Trade Fair (ZITF) in Ndola on the copperbelt.
He said this in a speech read for him by Vice President, Rupiah Banda at the official opening of the 44th ZITF (ZITF).
Dr. Mwanawasa said he was happy that exhibitors from Seattle have responded positively to his personal invitation.
He said after the United Nations General Assembly in the USA he travelled to Seattle where he personally extended an invitation to the business community.
The president said the government will do everything within its powers to facilitate business ventures in the country.
Dr
#70. How come the briefing on Lusakatimes has not included content you have unveiled? What is your source?
Just what is Brian Death? One philosopher the other day raised an issue where he said “optimism often mask false hope”. I’m a staunch supporter of LPM, but, I feel something about him is yet to come. I’ve feeling LPM might have been certified dead by brain death. But one thing is that he can be put on life supporting machine for as long as you may wish. But, is worth it. NO! I wish LPM well if he’s not dead yet. I’m a liberal thinker. Forgive me
A little insight into what can be expected after Neurosurgery, draining or removal of clot. Usually pt are sedated to try and reduces pressures in the skull. BP is maintained to a certain level to allow the brain to have adequate blood flow. The brain is usually swollen, & it takes a few days to settle, hence the sedation. Pts are then reviewed periodically by stopping the sedation, whose level in the blood may take hours or days to clear depending on the type used. This “wakening test” is used to assess the function of the brain, if pt is still very agitated or has “fits”, they get re-sedated, & reviewed in few days time.
the news item quoted by #70 is on the znbc website. No special privy to that.
I always suspected Mbeki to be the top most Kachepa in SADC; now we know about the one minute silence he called for in so called memory of dead Levy when our president is still alive. These were monstrous crocodile tears because this is the fool who would not even return Levy´s called, no wonder he wishes him for dead. Its also lies that Salamao, the SADC chief told him Levy is dead, the man has said it was not him who called Mbeki, so can he tell us who told him the stinking lies?
who is the woman sitting next to Rupiah???
you don’t know? she’s Danny Pule’s future ex-wife.
itts a girlfreind
Deeply moved by our nation’s turning to God to pray for our president. This is where our strength lies. God is all powerful. There is no harm in praying more in times of dire need.
It is also understandable that news blackout on LPM’s real condition is pushing the patience of many people. Being taken for a ride is not good. We however need to continue to be patient and not stop praying. Prayer will see us through strongly as a nation. 2 Chronicles 7:14
We also need to be patient and considerate for one another. We all love our country and many of us a well performing president too.
Mulongoti reminds me of UNIP Days when they treated people like fools or little children. Honestly how can Mulongoti say that LPM will be undergoing a Medical Examination. What Have the Doctors been doing all this time. These are the kind of excuses one saves for his children. Further tests would have made more sense.
Something is really wrong here. I hope they can be more straight up. ICU in most cases is life support!!.
Good luck Levy
thank God Levy is alive
God help zambia!we know you are always there for us , let no man’s plans prevail over the plans that you have for our nation.
In jesus christ ,we believe you will deliver amen.
This government is a joke. The worthless NCC has been intoxicated with a desire to “lock” out Sata from the next Presidential elections … instead of truly caring for the future of the country. Zambia has been an independent country for 44 years (come October 2008) and we still do not have a clear and defined process and protocol of succession when a Head of State is incapacitated.
Who is lying? The government says: “The doctors attending to (Mwanawasa) are happy with progress he has made so far and his condition remains stable. He has continued to receive treatment for hypertension in the intensive care unit and there are no new developments,” Zambian Vice President Rupiah Banda said in a statement.
(See next post)
Who is lying? SHARM EL-SHEIK, Egypt (AP) — The head of an Egyptian hospital says Zambia’s president was in a semi-coma when medically evacuated to Paris from the African Union summit.
Saeed Abdel Fattah Essa says President Levy Mwanawasa had a “brain hemorrhage,” which Egyptian doctors stopped when he was taken to his hospital on Sunday. Essa says Wednesday that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak visited Mwanawasa before his evacuation Tuesday evening. A semi-coma is a mild or partial comatose state.
At this time who are the possibilities for that office – Presidency? I have names which I can’t mention because I don’t want to endanger their lives. We have over 400 top civil servants/Ministers/Army commanders/Task force officers appointed by the President who will be affected by LPM’s situation. They will do anything to lie and make simple minded Zambians believe that President Mwanawasa is all fine. These people are important and have done alot to make Levy tick during his presidency. Why are President’s relatives like Shikapwasha, Shakafuswa,Masebo,Mpombo, Chituwo not saying anything? These are the people with the real data and not ZNBC or Rupiah Banda.
CHINEKE GODOOOOOOOO! GOD FORBID NOW
quick recovery to our president
Anonymous, you are such an alarmist and a tribalist. Why are you so bitter about LPM and the people you have mentioned ? Why dont you talk of how many of such people were in Kaunda’s and Chiluba’s government ? Is it that your eyes are now open beacuse it is not your fellow Bemba who is Office ? We all know that you have gunged up to find your way back in Plot 1, you will not make it. Stop witch hunting man ! Think positively
#86. Before you show more of your ingnorance. The vice president takes over until the end of the term. Which in this case would be 2011 when the next elections are held.
#87. That is abomination. Keep away from those movies too much ubuloshi!!
ZE CAPITAL – KASHIKISHI, I not a bemba and I have nothing personal against President Mwanawasa.LPM has done alot in terms of instilling fear in our civil service and really making people think twice before stealing.LPM has protected the gains of HIPC completion point. What I am against at this moment is when Ministers like Mulongoti treat us like small kids by lying on the medical condition of LPM and that is the only reason that i mentioned Chituwo, Mpombo, Masebo, Shikapwasha could give us a more accurate position. This situation is unique in the sense that this the second stroke LPM has had in 2 years.
I still maintain that there are over 400 appointees of LPM who enjoy the lies of Mike.
Mbuzi you have no love of Zambia by suggesting that VEEP will rule until 2011 even when the President dies in office. Are you really serious or joking? it seems you are so afraid of the people you have offended in the last 7 years – like Mr Funjika in prison.
#92 . As far as I know and understand the veep takes over for the remainder of the term as per our constitution. I am a Zambian , born , bred and buttered.
What do you think would happen – hold general elections every time a president dies?
Mbuzi for your sake and to those who are so afraid I will quote article 38 of the 1996 constitution:
38(Vancancy of the office of President)
(1) If the office of the President becomes vacant by reason of his death or resignation or by reason of ceasing to hold office by virtue of article 36,37 or 88,an election to the office of President shall be held in accordance with article 34 WITHIN 90 DAYS from the day of the becoming vacant.
Mbuzi I hope his helps.
#93. On whose mandate??? Zambia is not Botswana. That is the reason we are demanding for a good constution so that it is very clear on procedures to follow when the president is incapacitated.
#Iwe Mbuzi, we will have new elections within 90 days should LPM be unfit to continue his mandate. Personally, I just feel sorry for LPM’s political appointees, 400 plus that is a lot of people. I hope, this time, this number will be filled by people based on merit not on family relations.
#94 . I have learnt something. so would it be a general election? Or Just within MMD? Honestly speaking I am naive on this subject and I am sure many more are.
#95. I agree the constutuiton needs has to be clear!
How about voting Jonas Shakafuswa in to take over from icibumba if things were to get to that? What do you think folks, quite tempting huh?
God Bless all Zambians so that we can all move forward under ” One Zambia, One Nation ” cry.
It really does not matter if Mulongoti or the GRZ is telling us lies, as long as we know that we will have the final say at the end of it all.
#97 It has to be a general election in order for the newly elected president to be able to form govt, becoz a simple presidential election might end up electing a president from minor opposition party facing a majority “hostile” parliament which would make his/her tenure quite challenging.
Ever once in a while, a Zambian demonstrates utter stupidity.
#98. If Shakafuswa is to take over, Buffalo games will be compulsory for all schools and on weekly basis.
Just thinking, in an event LPM opts to resign as President due to whatever reason, okey health in this case, who do you guys think would be an appropriate replacement within MMD?
We are so obsessed with trbal barriers ,i still don’t understand why people like ZE CAPITAL keep associating every one who says nonses has been Bember, worse more all the lads you believe to be Bembers are not even who you think they are.So pliz move on and stop been a cheap analyst and a tribal minace, get alife.Chiluba should even be credited for choosing Mwanawasa has his successor if all you say about LPM is honey. At least he was’nt tribal. So go to hell and just listen to interlectuals like ANONYMOUS, Bruv keep inforeming this layed back evil trbalist’s on this blog.
#94, according to what you have pasted article 38 is only saying ‘an election’ and nothing about whether it’s just gona be prsidential or general. I say this in light of # 100 comment. What does article 34 say?
#102, very funny! Shakafu is one of the fellas that must go if things aren’t well with our current president.
Levy should either be taken to south africa or london. statistic shows that most leaders flown to paris for treatment dies. yesser Arafat died in the same hospital. former Israeli prime minister is still alive because he is in Israel.
we want levy in SOuth africa or London
#86, Kindly define a simple minded person, and a sophisticated mind person. I believe, such a clear distinction would help us move forward in every aspect of the country, for there are issues better handled by a simple mind and others better handled by a sophisticated mind. Or is that simple minds are to be trashed?
chris wey chi puba
Leave LPM out of this you people just cant get it through your heads that LPM is ill and so you go straight to saying he is dead. The man is alive
#105, articles 34 thru to 38 are clear about the president. The constitution is not for MMD but for all the people and these articles talk about a REPUBLICAN PREZIDO not an MMD presido. Also presidential elections and parliamentry elections are separate execept in zed they are normally held on one and the same day to offset costs. Just as the last elections were tripartite, but sometimes we only go for parley and prezido
So in the event a prezido resigned, article3 34 will be effective and in the case he dies its 38 specific for the president and not for the MP’s
All you guys are doing is listening to foolish rumors. LPM is alive and kicks
#111, thanks for the infor. I’ve never read these articles and gat no access to them. So, from what you’ve said, only presidential elections shall be held after the 90 days, right?
# ulejoba constitution ya zambia not ubu fontini
#90 Mbuzi ulejoba constitution ya zambia not ubu fontini
#113 u are rite, only for the president as govt has already been formed unless the veep who is acting decides to dissolve parley then we go for full blown general elections but in this case i bet we can only effect 34 or 38 to offset costs as no MP will agree as even RP is just an appoiented MP not elected so he would prefer to remnain VP as he will be liked by the incoming as well as the MP’s whom he will save from losing their jobs
What does the MMD constitution say about the situation were they hold the national presidency, and the bearer becomes incapacitated to continue been president? How do they come up with a candidate for the elections? I wonder if the opposition parties have contingency plans for the current situation.
# 116 CHE GUEVERA, whoz job is it to see that these articles are involked, and strictly adhered to? Is it the Veep or the Chief Justice? Do these people have control over the security agencies, including the armed forces? I know, I’m asking you too much, but pliz help chase the seeds of ignorance out of my brain!
I think we should have full blown elections, Prez and parley elections. Those who won through rigging last time especially some MPs won’t have the chance this time around because there is no one to protect them. We will have the cleanest elections in recent times in Zambia.

Yes we all wish LPM well and a speedy recovery but its no longer about him, he is just a politician. Its not about what we should do for him, its about what we should do for the country. He has done his part and used up his chance, its time for other people. I agree with you though, that we need a young leader to take the nation forward but who can come up within this 90 days? I think Sata should be given a chance so that come 2011 we should have a fresh open race with everybody have equal chance to win. Sata will not be able to go beyond 2011, his health and age won’t allow it. He is also the right person to finish LPM’s agenda.
#118, no need to worry as of now Zambia has a president, one is acting and the other is ill. The chief justice will set up a team of qualified medical personel to examine the presido and if he is found incapacitated to carry out his duties, then he is going to send a report to cabinet who are going to appoint among themselves a leader to lead zed for 3 montns in which elections for a new president will be done. No need to worry who has control of armed forces-its still the president only in this case we are putting the term =acting=
The good thing is Sata and LPM have made peace so Sata’s admin would be nice to what will soon be a former administration of LPM. Obviously not everyone will have it easy but that is life. PF has been a gov’t in waiting for a while now, this is their time to step in gov’t. It would be nice to see MMD in opposition and see how long they will last. I can already see some people planning defections from MMD to PF so that they can have a possible role in a Sata lead admin.
One Zambia One Nation
The other candidate that is likely to do well should we have elections within 90 days is HH. He did well in 2006 even though he was a new politician and I think this time around, his party would become the biggest opposition party in Zambia. Come 2011 HH will most likely be the President of Zambia after people are tired of Sata’s admin. HH should be ready for this role.
#103(Mwiinga), I do not see any Presidential hopeful in MMD apart from Maureen Mwanawasa only that people will not like it.
Those who are suggesting Sata’s takeover, should the worst happen to LPM have no heart for Sata. The man has just recovered from heart attack and needs serious rest. If he begins to campagn, you possibly will witness another heart attack, and the world will think there is something wrong with us Zedians! Why do we have a cleaving for people who are prone to heart attacks? Lets guide the electrorates to avaoid another presidential by-election. Sata is sick, hence HH is the man period
Cont.d
You see Sata should take heed of my advise. LPM is what he is now coz he was not willing to listen to other people’s advise in 2006. If he would have opted to step down on medical grounds, LPM would have lived longer and we would have been talking about other things. A similar advise was given to Mazoka and he continued his political career, where is he? Politics requires the medically fit like the young man HH.This is free advise, take it or leave it.
Thanks.
Article 39(2)
If the President is incapable by reason of physical or mental infirmity of discharging the functions of his office and the infirmity is of such a nature that President is unable to authorize another person under this article to perform those functions–
a) the Vice President shall perform the functions of the office of the President.
# for how long will the veep act? Only 90 days constitutionally

# 125 CHE GUEVERA, thanks for the infor. and interpretation of the constitution.
Anonymous while we appreciate your love for Sata, putting Sata into office now is like failing to learn a lesson from what has happened to Levy. If only Zambians could be objective HH is the best candidate we have but pipo brash him aside due to his ethnicity which is a sad situation for Zambia. Accept we do not learn. I for one Sata is out of the question. Coupled with his arrogance, I don’t see him being different from Mugabe. That is my honest opinion.
If iffii ifiii I come back i’ll fire all of you from Zambia.
#138 Connie i agree with you about the need to learn something, albeit troubling, from these situations. I am having trouble however about understanding why people are so quick to want to annoint possible successors when there has been no official word from govt regarding the President,s status.Furthermore some seem to think that should that become necessary, they can pick ‘n choose via the net.Say it aint so cos there are 8 million more Zambians whithout access to the net who will want to cross the bridge when we get to it.Get real people, theres more to political leadership and choices than the wishful thinking of blogging. Until then theres no bridge to cross
Fellow country men and women, there is absolutely no need to worry as to what happens in the event the prezido ceases to be in office by virtue of incapacitation or death(God forbid. Since we have the Veep, he was written to by LPM before he went to Egypt to act as PRESIDO and so this authority is binding until LPM comes and reverses the authority. In the event he doesnt do that Cabinet will help Veep to organise elections within 90 days and these elections are just for the president as the veep who is acting cannot dissolve the Nat Assembly unless he is told so with the help of the speaker. In this case a general election will be held to put up fresh parley and cabinet. This is unlikely in
This is unlikely in zed coz these MP’s are still stubborn and cannot allow themselves to go for such a vote that NA be dissolved and the likely event is just presidential elections as when u persuse thru articles 34 thru to 38 and 88, dissolution of NA is for the PRESIDENT not an ACTING. Also costs attached to general elections are what may be a detterant for the speaker and cabinet to go and invoke the clause on dissolving NA.
God help Zambia and i know we zedians come out strong after every turbulent activities.
Just like the acting presido cannot fire any one who was appointed by LPM in this case nor appoint anyone to replace such a one who was appointed by LPM.
His is just to act in the frame work of simple executive duties of the presido and not to start hire and fire, mind you our set up is a bit trick coz the veep is a mere appointee and will do his best to embrace the person who appointed him as he is not a running mate who was duly elected like in Malawi where the veep assumes the presidency for the rest of the term
This must be a lesson to all zambians that while its against our human nature to capitalize on some’s illness, the office of the president is a hot spot and a person bidding for such a post MUST be physically, mentally and morally fit. We cannot continue with medical bills everytime. By the way, this was an emmergency and accordingly allowances were not calculated for the extension of mrs mwanawasa, daughter and the rest who are still at his bed side. To avoid this, we need the constitution to put as an extra qualification for a president the medical fitness quality. Sorry but we rarely hear other prezidos ill but our own is in and out of medical institutions. Its not supposed to be like th
Its not supposed to be like this for the head of state. This also goes for MP’s, we cannot go on making bye elections just because some of these people are unfit, they cant even run 100 metres or lift a simple 1 kilo weight.
The best option is to invest in the health institutions in zambia. give them a very good facelift and capacitate them by getting the best medical equipment instead of spending the monies on air tickets and per deim allowances like mwanawasa’s daughter and wife are getting now even when its a sickness.
All said and done, God help zed
Prayers cannot be wild prayers can not be made in an environment of uncertainty. We do not know the truth,we do not know what is currently happening in france. What is it then we are going to pray for because we know not whether he is dead or not.Man has taken over the fate of Mr Mwanawasa. They are as of now a closed door to his life .If the president is dead it is not good going on as if he were alive,if he is alive then it is the vice president who knows alone and on this basis we can here him. However, even with all these happenings what can we find to say at the end,we only wish that God who currently knows where Mr mwanawasa is must grant him peace in this life and in the after life
#146. Ned you are very right, I also have tried to think of how God really can answer prayers that are coming from people who are doubtiful. Moreover what an abmination it can be to find that people have been told to pray for somebody who is not there. We need real assurance from those people in france otherwise speculations about LPM’s condition will continue.
