Chieftainess Nyakulenga of Zambezi East in Northwestern Province, has called upon Government to expedite the exploration
of gas, oil and other minerals in her chiefdom.
Chieftainess Nyakulenga said this when Northwestern Provincial Minister Kenneth Chipungu paid a courtesy call on her at her palace in Zambezi over the weekend.
The traditional ruler pointed out that the discovery of gas, oil and various other minerals in the area would create employment and brings economic development to the district and the province as a whole, thereby transforming the living standards of the people there.
Chieftainess Nyakulenga further expressed sadness that she could not be given a small scale mining license she had applied for a long time ago.
Meanwhile Chieftainess Nyakulenga has commended Government for the utility vehicles it gave to Chiefs for use in monitoring development projects in their various chiefdoms.
The traditional leader said that previously Chiefs had difficulties in carrying out their duties in monitoring developmental projects in their areas.
Chieftainess Nyakulenga has however complained of poor radio reception in her area.
She said radio reception in her area was so poor that people could not get Radio Zambia, except for foreign Radio stations which were using languages that could not be understood.
In response, Northwestern Provincial Minister, Kenneth Chipungu said Government was waiting for the Petroleum Act to be presented in Parliament.
Mr. Chipungu said Government wants the local community to participate in mining activities so that they were not disadvantaged.
The Oil industry is a complex. It an industry were the entire value chain: Exploration, production, refinery,to distribution at the filing station is controlled by powerful oligopolies. It is very different from simple Copper. GRZ better take time to enact a good oil law, govt equity participation policy for selected or entire value chain components. Let not rush and do a mining windfall taxes flip flop again. Oil companies are tougher political players than mining companies. Lets learn from other countries mistakes/experiences .
Venezuela, Nigeria, Angola, Sudan are countries we can learn from even Ghana recently discovered crude oil offshore but they are still putting the house in order before any major deals can be made
This act must wait for a new head of state as the current one is ill and I hope the new man will have zambians at heart. Kalombo Mwansa is a fake as far as empowerment to locals is concerned.
Don’t get too excited. if there was meaningfull oil we would have had oil sharks by now offering big mane.
If there is anything, it is too little.
There is no doubt the announcement about gas and oil deposits in the NWP at the time of the 2006 Elections by LPM was a political gimmick to get votes, and he did get the votes.
Its true I was in this area recently our worry is that oil come with a price, WAR source!!!!
The govt knew about that oil in the 70’s.
The people won’t even benefit from the oil? it might as well remain undisturbed. Nigeria’s niger delta is a good example? Look at Zaire with all it’s wealth? If the chief thinks she will benefit from the loyalities she has something coming up sleeve? Investors….my foot.
I better start retracing my footsteps in my village where i am Chief.
With this royalty business,i might miss out on the power of oilo!!
I do not belive there is anything meaningfull. Oil is too valuable a commodity for Zambia to have and not be courted by the big powers.
If we had oil PLM would be getting treatment in the white hse.
Bushe guys Nyakulenga niani?
This ***** should know by now that Oil (or Oilo), America and Britain are synonymous. We do not want to be like Nigeria. No no way you fool. Then again, ministers in Nigeria are rich people!
Rubbish # 11,You must be a Bemba because you have no regards for other tribe chiefs.Your parents never brought you with good manner. You do not go insult everyone one the net.Lets not forget that we are all zambians and the oil in North Western province is for all of us.You never know whose father or mother you are insulting. One Zambia one nation.

Rubbish # 11, uli chishupi, you should not disrespect my Chief like that. If you don’t know about her, I will give you a little history: She is Lunda of Zambezi, and what she has said is representing the whole Lunda people of Zambia.
insulting chiefs shows how uncircumscized these people are. take them for initiation into manhood or womanhood then they will learn to respect everyone
Shame on you #11. You lack morals and respect.
yes ive touched on your nerves you *****s. yes am bemba imwe vi ba Lunda so what. go and dance vinyau and stop this ma rubbish.
Zambian oil, we doubt very much, remember at one time there was this notion by KK and his govt of extracting oil from grass from some place in eastern province. nothing happened and no one talks about that project. If at all there were reasonable reserves you would have already seen oil mining giants in the country .
???????????
No wonder you call yourself Rubbish because even what is coming out of you is rubbish.
Going around insulting will not help you in any way. If we insult you as well how will you feel?
#Rubbish!

You who is insulting whom do you think you are remember if you insult your mothers friend you have as insulted your own mother.

LT IS there a way of censoring some of these MATUVI COMENTS which some people make here? Thats y some of us dont usually comment we just laugh…ha ha ha ha ha ha ha oweeeeeeeeeeee
Yeah, I wish I could meet the ideal schedule! The only time I was able to do that cnleistsotny was when I was unemployed T__T So yeah it’s damned if you do, damned if you don’t, since I refuse to rush production I have not posted/ censored maybe one or two posts ever, they were posts that had swearing in a non-funny, offensive way. In general though there’s an expectation of trust. If I just stopped posting everything that was bad , then I’d be like you know China or some awful place and that’s not very nice. You wouldn’t be able to trust any of the comments knowing that I could be deleting all the ones that I disliked.
#28 i agree.
there is no comment which tastes like Matuvi Mr Popopo sir. perhaps its your shirt sir check again.
….iye ba Kenneth Chipungu ni ba Minister manje…mama
Rubbish is the man, the only one who eats matuvi, no wonder he know the taste.
Dear Zambians, this is how we miss it all. Instead of discussing the issue at hand, we are busy insulting each other. I can imagine how fruitless a parliamentary debate session would it would be if a combination of us were involved.
We must be discussing as to whether we need oil? do we have a reason to celebrate that announcement? how could the deposits be exploited sustainably? or who should be involved. Otherwise, what would anyone get out of an exchange of insults. Do you think that was the purpose of depositing this article on the web. Let’s be reasonable.
